1. There were so many reasons Grace fell for Dominic. He was fun, sweet, sensitive and smart. He brought the best out in her. He made her so happy and she marveled in the fact that it was him she fell in love with. She had grown up believing in the fairy tales she was told like Cinderella, where her prince would one day come riding in and save her. As she got older she came to realize that fairy tales where just that. Tales that never came true. But now, now she had met her match. No one fit her like Dominic. And after a few months of dating, she knew she loved him. She was torn knowing fairy tales weren’t true, but she knew as far as real life was concerned, Dominic could be her prince.
2. He told her he had a surprise for her and picked her up at six o’clock one evening. Dominic led her into the car and refused to tell her anything as he drove. She was shocked when he led her to the side entrance of the parks game field and out into the middle of the soccer field. It was late and already the sun was setting low in the sky.
3. “Dom? What are we doing here?” Gracie asked. I thought we were going out to dinner, I’m not dressed to play with you tonight.” They often had come to the park to play against each other. Mostly it ended in him winning but he let her think she had a chance. But tonight she was in a skirt and sandals. She couldn’t play.
4. He just looked at her and smiled as he started leading her out onto the field. “We are having dinner.”
5. That’s when she saw and understood. He must have come earlier, in front of them was set out a blanket and food was there waiting. He had set it up for a beautiful night alone just the two of them under the stars. Grace looked at him not knowing what to say.
6. “This is the first place we saw each other.” He took both her hands in his, “I was standing right here,” leading her onto the blanket, “and I looked up and saw you watching the game, but not seeing it. You were so distracted or you would have noticed I was watching you more than I was the game.”
7. Grace couldn’t take her eyes off Dominic. So he continued, “I remember thinking I had to meet you, had to know you. You looked lost and vulnerable there that day, but I could tell you were a strong person. I wanted to know your story. When Dan told me you were the one he was setting me up with, I knew it was meant to be. That is why I wouldn’t take no for an answer. That is why I have been spending every spare moment of my time wanting to be with you and thinking about you. Not because I told Dan I would go to some couples things with you, but because I love you.” Her eyes sharpened and she drew in a deep breath when he said that.
8. “Oh Dom. You don’t know me though.” She closed her eyes.
9. “I know all I need to know Gracie.”
10. It wasn’t right, “You know what I have let you know.”
11. “I bet I know more than you think I do.” He ran his hands over her hair. “Why are you fighting this?” Dominic asked confused.
12. “I don’t know.” Grace let him hold her face and trace a thumb over her mouth. “I want you to love me; I’ve been waiting for this. But it seems too good to be true Dom.” She took a deep breath, “Like if you really knew everything about me, you would change your mind.”
13. “Okay.” He smiled gently, “Like?”
14. “Like I have been pretending to be fun and outgoing and bold all this time because if you knew how much I’m not you would be bored beyond reason.”
15. He pulled her into his arms and leaned back so he could still see her face. “Remember the first words you said to me?” he asked. “Ok, well not the first thing.” He laughed when she looked confused. “The first thing you did was insult me by mistake, that’s where I saw your spunk and I liked that. After that you could barely talk at all. This made talking you into going out with me easier. And you kept blushing. If you were really bold, we wouldn’t have had problems talking at first, and I wouldn’t have fallen for you. I loved the challenge of opening you up.”
16. She looked down. “You knew all along I was just acting different?”
17. “Yeah,” he lifted her face to meet his eyes. “And I thought anyone who would go to that much trouble to impress me must like me.”
18. Grace wrapped her arms tighter around him and tucked her head under his chin. He smelled so good and felt amazing holding her, they fit so perfectly. She could stay there forever. She didn’t know who started it but before long they were dancing together under the stars in the first place they had laid eyes on each other.
19. “Dom?” She asked.
20. “Hmmmmm.” It was the only reply she received.
21. “I love you too.” Grace held her breath. She had never thought she would say that to anyone. She always figured she would never be truly in love and comfortable enough to say it. But she knew Dominic accepted every good, bad, silly thing about her. She believed he loved her and it felt right. She felt relieved that he mirrored her own feelings. It was only right he know that.
22. He stopped their dancing and pulled away. Now Grace was scared she had said the wrong thing. Now that she found him she didn’t want to lose him. Man she hated worrying all the time! Her arms were cold where his touch had been keeping her warm and she crossed her arms, took a calming breath and looked at him. He was smiling. Relief rushed through her and she started smiling too.
23. “I know.” Was all he said.
24. “Wait a minute.” Grace stopped as he continued to grin. “What do you mean you know?”
25. “I knew. I always have.” He shrugged and sat down on the blanket pulling out the meal from a basket and lighting some candles. It was starting to get dark.
26. She stared at him and wondered what it must be like to always be so sure of everything. Then she gave up and smiled when he pulled her down to sit next to him. She liked what they had and, she supposed, if she weren’t the way she was, she wouldn’t have what she did.
27. The meal was simple but perfect. Dominic had packed it himself and even remembered she loved green olives, and added food from Lithuania she had never heard of. She loved listening as he explained what they were called and what they were. After the meal, they laid back and watched the stars. As it got cooler, Grace moved to put her head on Dominic’s shoulder.
28. “Dom.” Grace sighed.
29. “Yes hun.” He said as he held her.
30. “Hmmmmmm.” She turned in his arms so she was on her belly over him. “Dominic.” She smiled at him and started to kiss him softly along his jaw up to his ear. Nipping on it she whispered his name one more time and moved so she was more fully over the top of him, slipping her knee between his legs straddling him.
31. “Uhhhh Gracie.” His hands traveled down her back and rested on her hips.
32. She placed her hands on either side of his head forcing him to look up at her. She lowered her mouth to his and kissed him lightly at first, letting him deepen the kiss. As he did he grabbed her waist and rolled her onto the ground, switching the position so he was on top of her.
33. “Gracie we need to stop,” He groaned into her hair as she ran hands up under his shirt, feeling warm skin across a lean body, “before we go too far.”
