1. Mike had been searching all day for Keri. He wanted answers and the longer he waited for them the angrier he got. She wasn’t even answering her cell phone. Not that that should surprise him, she was probably to busy sleeping around.
2. He had called Amber too, When he finally reached her she had hung up on him, refused to even talk to him. So he had driven around town searching every imaginable place Keri might be at, including the doctor’s office he had seen prescribed the prescription.
3. Now it was late, and driving by Keri’s house, he still couldn’t her. He slammed on the horn at a car parked to long at a green light and turned right as soon as he was at the intersection. His thoughts dark and anger so strong he couldn’t force himself to give up for the night.
4. He drove several blocks down the road and was ready to pull around the block for another pass at Keri’s house when he slammed on the brakes. Keri was here, at the park, at one in the morning.
5. He squeezed the steering wheel in his anger as he noticed she wasn’t alone. She had been cheating on him. And with Jake Stevens! He should have know, all the defending him and special cookies. He watched as Keri pulled him up and into his arms. This little asshole was the one who got Keri pregnant? What was Keri thinking? Was she thinking?
6. He pulled the car into the parking lot and jumped out. All he could see was Jake sitting nonchalantly on the bench. Keri took off, she must have seen him, but he would deal with her later, right now he just needed to get rid of Jake.
7. He was sitting there with his eyes closed, making strange wheezing sounds. Someone else must have gotten to him first. How many girls did he get in trouble? “Jake.” Mike growled, “Get up.”
8. Jakes eyes snapped open in surprise. “What? Man leave me alone.”
9. Mike grabbed his collar and pulled him up off the bench. “What the hell do you think you are doing with Keri? Do you think I would just stand back and watch you two humiliate me?” He pulled Jake closer ignoring the cries of pain. “Watch the two of you have a happy little fucking family and laughing about how you screwed me over?” Mike punched Jake in the stomach. “Think you can just steal my girl? You the one making her think she’s all the sudden better than me?” He punched him again, harder this time.
10. It took all Jakes strength and concentration to free himself from Mikes grip. “Man! Get off me, I didn’t do anything. Any problems you have are your own doing.” He swayed on his feet, “You’re a huge asshole and don’t deserve Keri, and personally…”
11. Mike took another punch, and Jake collapsed on the ground. Mike continued kicking in his rage and screaming as Jake lay unmoving on the pavement. “You fucking bastard! Does it make you feel like a man tricking women into sleeping with you, telling them lies about the real men in their lives? Bet you never thought one would come back at you did you? Well I’m not about to let you just get away with it!”
12. “Shit! Mike! STOP! What the hell are you doing?” Keri screamed having come back from her house with her car. Jake was on the ground, unmoving and blood everywhere, for the second time that night. She thought for a moment she was going to be sick, but anger over powered her. Before she could even think she was hitting Mike as hard a s she could. She used everything she had trying to pull him away.
13. Mike turned to her and she didn’t recognize his face. He was completely over taken with his anger and it twisted his face, she knew he had completely lost it. “You monster!” She screamed
14. “I’ll deal with you later.” He shrugged her off, but she came right back at him. “He didn’t do anything!” She cried, she couldn’t stop the tears.
15. “Stop right where you are.” Mike froze at the sound of a new loud and controlled voice. He looked up to see police lights flashing and lighting up the night sky.
16. Mike looked over at Keri as she jumped in front of Jake and cradled his head in her lap. “Slut” He spat at her. He took one more kick but aimed this time for Keri.
17. Keri doubled over, but more to protect Jake, and only looked up to watch the police handcuffing Mike.
18. “You again huh?” She heard one of the officers ask. “This doesn’t look good for you young man. Do you know what happens to people who get domestic violence charges over and over again?” He looked over at Jake. “And it’s possible this might be worse for you.”
19. Keri lost the conversation as the paramedics rushed in for Jake, pushing her out of their way. One older paramedic pulled her to the back of the ambulance. “Are you okay Miss? Do you have any complaints?”
20. “Is Jake going to be alright?”
21. The EMT was checking her pulse and sat her down on the bench. She cringed as she sat. “Where are you hurt?”
22. “What?” Keri asked. “I’m fine it’s Jake, I need to know how he is!” She was starting to get hysterical.
23. “Miss? Calm down please we are checking him out now, but I need to check you over too. You’re bleeding too.” The paramedic prodded the area over Keri’s stomach and she winced again. “Can you lay back here Miss, we are going to take you in just to be safe.” They loaded her onto a stretcher as Keri strained to keep an eye on Jake.
24. “Why aren’t they loading Jake in? He needs to go first, he can’t breathe!” She was crying and trying to make the paramedic understand. The two lifting her into the ambulance shared a look over her stretcher. “What?” She asked, catching the look. “What? What aren’t you telling me!”
25. “Shhh… Just rest now. We will take care of everything.”
26. Keri felt the sob building at the back of her throat, and the hot tears falling down the sides of her head and into her hair. As she was being lifted up into the ambulance, she saw the cluster of paramedics standing over Jake, who was motionless on the ground. The only person moving or doing anything was an officer with a camera, snapping pictures of Jake from several different angles. Others were shaking their heads and whispering, pointing to Mike in the back of a squad car. And she knew.
27. The pain Keri felt was not from the abuse Mike had inflicted or from the doctors as they evaluated her. All she could think was that she hadn’t had enough time to get to know the real Jake. No one knew him. As little as she knew, it was possible she knew him better than anyone. Would his family even miss his? He had lived his life in their shadows, and when he started to take his own small steps forward, he had been crushed, he had been killed.
