1. Keri sat staring at the doctor focusing on his bowed bald head as he continued to talk as he wrote in her chart. “So luckily everything seems to be alright.” He was saying, “You will probably be sore for a couple of days, nothing is broken which is good because considering what happened, and the trauma involved, I’d like to take it easy and you shouldn’t take anything for the pain if you can help it.” He looked up at her with an absent minded grin on his small pinched face and pushed his glasses back onto his face. “Any questions?”
2. “Yeah. What?” Keri said without moving a muscle. Breath she told herself, breathe it is all a mistake you misunderstood.
3. “I said if you can, avoid any painkillers and...”
4. “No before that!” Keri started waiving her hands impatiently. “Why?”
5. “Well it’s really not all that good for the baby.” He looked at her for a full minute, her mouth open and face going pale before he realized that maybe she was not okay. “Miss Dawson? Are you okay? Do you need to lie back for a little bit? Want some water?” He looked truly concerned as he helped her settle back in the bed. “You didn’t know you were expecting were you?”
6. Kylie shook her head. “I… I haven’t been feeling well but I thought I have just been so stressed. I just got accepted to New York School of the Arts and Mike…” She trailed off and covered her face. “How far along am I?”
7. “Not too far, about six weeks.” He sat in his chair and rolled his chair to the bed side. “Do you want me to send in the nurse to talk about your options with you at this point?”
8. “What options?”
9. “Well we need to go over some do’s and don’ts, get you started on pre natal vitamins and set up some appointments for checkups,  I know some great doctors. Or, I can give you information if you decide not to keep the baby.”
10. “Are you talking about abortion? No way!” Kylie shouted without thinking.
11. “Or adoption Miss Dawson.” The doctor patted her hand. “Think about it, I’ll send in the nurse to finish up and ask any questions you may have.”
12. Kylie nodded and looked down as the doctor left. This was not something she had seen coming. Six weeks ago Mike had been gone on a trip with his work. It must have happened seven weeks ago, the night Mike had come to her house drunk and wouldn’t take no for an answer. He was so rough and he had been happy with her then, she hated to think of making him mad. As much as she hated Mike, could she take care of his baby? And what about school? It hadn’t even started yet and it was already in jeopardy. What was she going to do if she didn’t go to school? She couldn’t afford a baby on her own. She knew she couldn’t abort, it wasn’t in her. Could she carry a child for nine months to just give it up?
