1. Kylie ran out the front door without seeing. She had never been so angry and hurt. How dare Mike! She was angry that he hurt her, angry that he knew what he was doing and saying, angry that he went farther to include her best friend. But most of all she was angry at herself for not snapping earlier. It was her fault he was there in the first place. If she hadn’t made him mad or kept him waiting or… she looked down at herself. Maybe she had gained weight.
2. No wait. That didn’t make sense. It was her fault for making him angry but she was mad for not snapping sooner? She needed to think, rest and decide what she was going to do next.
3. Kylie hadn’t been looking when she ran and found herself at the city park. The playground looked odd in the middle of the night, lonely without kids climbing and parents chasing. But it still held that feeling of freedom she remembered from her childhood days. A place she had often gone to not think of homework or brothers or bullies. Even in the middle of the night in the winter she felt that childhood sense of freedom and she collapsed into a swing.
4. Her phone buzzed in her purse. She was not in the mood to talk to anyone and dropped the purse on the ground. She started flipping through the pages of her new portfolio. Amber had put so much work into this. She traced her fingers over the pages and reread about her accomplishments. She really did want to go to New York. The only thing really stopping her was she needed to be accepted and she missed the deadline to apply…
5. “Oh my word! How can I be so stupid!” Kylie shouted at herself, breaking the silence and causing some neighborhood dogs to start barking.  She grabbed at her purse and dug out the letter that had been the second part of Ambers Christmas gift. She looked at the letter with the New York address and praying silently for a minute, turned it over with shaking hands.
6. Dear Miss Dawson,
7. Thank you for applying to our school. Every year we open our doors, and take in the best perspective students into our school. It is never an easy decision and it pains me when we see young people who have a heart for the arts not make it into the school…
8. Kylie felt her heart stop. Mike had been right, He had been telling her she was terrible so that this wouldn’t happen. She balled up the paper and threw it on the ground, then held her head in her hands and started crying. Kylie let the heavy hopeless feeling take her down.
9. “Uhm… “
10. Kylie jumped when she heard the voice come from the shadows. She stood up shakily and a bit too quick, her head swam a little and she grabbed the swings chains to steady herself. “H-hello? Who’s there?”
