1. “What’s going on over here?” Mike interrupted coming over to the corner where the girls had hidden themselves. He spoke a little too loud as he handed Kylie a drink and then took the book from her hands. He was already well on his way to being drunk.
2. “Kylie was just opening her Christmas present.” Amber explained moving to the side, away from Mike.
3. “Mike,” Kylie said reaching for the portfolio, “Can I have that please?” She was starting to feel a panic attack coming on. Mike was not the person she wanted involved in any way in her photography. She stopped when this thought occurred to her. That wasn’t right; anyone as close to you as a boyfriend was supposed to be should be someone you wanted to share all your dreams with right?
4. “Well hold on a minute.” He said as he flipped open the book. “What the hell is this thing?”
5. “It, it’s my work.” Kylie said weakly as she made a grab for the book.
6. Mike pushed her back, causing himself to stumble as much as she did. He wasn’t on his way to being drunk, he already was. He let out a sharp laugh, “Well that explains why the pictures suck! Nothing published would have pictures this awful in it! I have seen better pictures in Dr. Seuss books.”
7. Kylie’s mouth dropped open and she came back up to Mike. “That was a gift to me Mike,” she said quietly, “give it back to me.”
8. “This was a gift? Who was stupid and cheap enough to give you your own pictures as a gift?” He looked at Amber with a smirk on his face as he threw the book on the trash can. “Look hun,” he said pulling Kylie to his side, “I found where you can keep it.”
9. Kylie was crying now as she saw Mike reacting exactly as she feared. She had wanted to keep her photography to herself and not let him ruin it for her. And what was worse was not only was he once again telling her she was worthless, something he never tired of, but that he had insulted her best friend. She looked over at Amber who stood completely shocked. She had never seen Mike like this, and had only taken Kylie at her word that he had an occasional mean streak. She had always been kind about her words too.
10. “Mike.” Kylie said quietly but firmly as she pulled away from him. “Shut up.”
11. Mike looked shocked for a minute. She had never said anything back to him, she wasn’t brave enough. And definitely never in front of other people. “What did you just say?”
12. Kylie walked over to the trash and picked up the prized present. “You’re drunk. Go home.”
13. “Don’t tell me what to do!” He started to talk even louder, if that was possible Kylie thought.”What’s gotten into you princess?” He added an extra emphasis on the word princess.
14. “You want to hurt me, that’s all you ever want Mike and I’m tired of it. But now you have gone too far. This was a wonderful present and you’re ruining it. And you hurt Amber.” Her voice was still low and firm.
15. “I have never hurt you, I tell you the truth because I care. You have no talent Kylie and you want others who don’t love you to tell you that?” He took a hold of her arm, “Really if you had any talent would you still be here, or would you have moved on and become someone? You would at least be someone who doesn’t dress like a slut, right?”
16. The shocked tears ran down her cheeks as a hot flush ran up them. She looked down at her red dress. She had chosen it because it was his favorite and she had hoped to make him happier. “I thought you liked this dress?”
17. “That was before you started parading around all the men in it. And I must add Kylie, it would help if you would stop gaining weight. I don’t know how that thing isn’t ripping at the seams right now.”
18. It was a low blow; he knew exactly where to hit where it hurt. And when he hit his mark she hit hers. Without thinking about it she reached up and slapped him hard across the cheek. She could only take so much.
19. Mike stood shocked, holding his cheek. He hadn’t expected that. But the shock wore off too quickly and he struck back. His hit was a lot harder though and when it made contact with Kylie’s face, he instantly had Amber on his back hitting him. Close behind her was her brother Sam and her boyfriend Alex. Amber had nothing to worry about, and Kylie grabbed her present and ran out the front door.
