1. Kylie went into the bathroom to find herself some aspirin. Her head throbbed with a headache and her wrist hurt a little from trying to catch herself when she fell. Why did Mike have to act like such a jerk? What was so wrong with trying to be nice? Why couldn’t he be a little nicer to her? It made her so mad sometimes. Why didn’t she leave him? Then she caught a glimpse of herself in the bathroom mirror. “Oh, yeah.” She whispered.
2. She stared a little longer at her reflection. What was it about people that made them pretty, she wondered. When you really think about it, everyone has the same features, so how come some are told they are beautiful, while others are told they aren’t? She wasn’t ugly, people told her she was pretty, but then growing up around people who constantly put her down; she had started to believe at an early age that she wasn’t. Negative comments are stronger than the positive ones, and she heard the negative ones a whole lot more.
3. She wasn’t a model; Kylie laughed at the thought, and pulled her shoulder length curly brown hair back into a pony tail. Then she pulled off her sweater and jeans, looking in the mirror as she did so. And even though she was not fat, she was very “curvy” as her mother put it.  Kylie had to work hard not to let the family genes take over. Without too much time staring into the mirror, she pulled on her favorite sweatpants and t-shirt. She had had this conversation with herself before and always came back with the same conclusion, she was lucky she even had Mike.  Besides, everyone had their bad moments… days.
4. Kylie went down to the basement to work in her darkroom, the one place she could forget herself and her worries. She wanted to work on some black and white pictures she had taken at her parents wedding anniversary. She got into her work and had the radio going, singing along with the oldies station she like working with, and ignored the phone when it would ring. Finally after the third call she answered.
5. “Hello?” Kylie said into the phone as she pulled the latest picture from the wash bath and clipped it on the line to dry.
6. “Kylie!!” Her friend Amber screeched into the phone so loud Kylie jumped and almost dropped it. “Where are have you been? Adam called me after he couldn’t get through to you.” Amber had been the only person Kylie had ever told her feeling s to about how Adam sometimes treated her.
7. “What? Why?” She turned her radio down and looked at the clock, “Oh no, it’s seven already.” Kylie groaned and looked down at herself, “The party, I totally lost track of time.”
8. “Don’t tell me you were in the darkroom again Kie! Please, please tell me you were in the shower.”
9. “I was working on my parents present.” She looked at the line of pictures she had lined up. “I was getting a lot done too. Maybe I will tell Mike I don’t wanna go”
10. “No! Kylie… Mike sounded mad; don’t do anything to make him madder, I don’t want you to get in a fight tonight. Besides I want you there. I have your Christmas gift still.”
11. “Ugh… using my love for presents against me I see.” Amber laughed. “Alright I’m gonna hang up then. I will take no longer than an hour to get ready.” Kylie crossed her heart, then felt silly remembering she was alone. “I swear!” They both knew Kylie took forever getting ready. Curly hair never listens, especially when you really really needed it too.
12. Amber laughed again, “Okay Kie, see you tonight.”
13. Kylie hung up and sighed. A party with Mikes college buddies was the last thing she wanted to do, but she had promised him she would go. She hurried up stairs to the bathroom passing the dishes on her way. Oh man, she really had meant to do those earlier. Add dishes on top of being late for when Mike picked her up, what happened this morning and if Mike had a bad day at work, which it sounds like he did, this was not going to be a fun party.
