1. Keri’s dad Dean had raised her after she had lost her mother in a car accident when Keri was five. The loss was a hard one for Dean. He had been a good father and husband and loved his wife dearly, but he was also used to working a lot to support his family and had left Keri’s care up to his wife. When she died it took a lot of work before Dean got used to the roles of both supporter and caregiver.
2. They were very close. Keri had a few good memories of her mother, but mostly of her dad as he struggled with raising a very curious and active daughter. He would teach her about sports and cars, typical guy things, then handing her over to Mrs. Wilson, their very kind older neighbor  when more delicate issues needed to be explained. This was their life for eight years.
3. When Dean had said that he wanted to marry again, Keri tried to fight to keep life as she knew it, but Alice was very hard not to like. She came from a similar situation, being the single mother of Trent, a boy, who at fifteen was two years older than her. They didn’t rush anything and as much as Keri didn’t like the situation, she had to admit her dad was really happy. She did like them, and eventually gave in.
4. The move was the hardest thing to deal with. She fought hard and did everything she could think of to guilt her dad into keeping the new family in Houston, but her dad held fast to the move. He had been offered a job in Denver and had accepted knowing that Alice and Trent had just moved from there two years previous.
5. “Now Keri,” He would always say, “We need to think what’s best for the family now, not just us.”
6. “But I don’t know anyone there!” Keri would whine. “I don’t wanna go!”
7. “I’m sure Trent has plenty of friends there. He will introduce you to people.” And that is what eventually happened. But Keri and Trent always got along so well, and she knew and enjoyed sports, so she spent that first summer in Denver with Trent and his friends.
8. It was the first day of high school though that Trent introduced her to his best friend Jake, who had been away for the summer. She had never been as sure about anything as she was then when she first met Jake. He was different, and she wanted him. But as sure as she was about wanting him she was as lost.  Her friends nicknamed her starey Keri, she lost the ability to speak, and any kind of coordination when he was around.
9. To this day Keri can’t understand why a junior like Jake took a second look at a freshman like her. But the day Jake first asked her out was the day Keri knew why she was glad her family made the move.  She still laughs about the teenage drama, but she did end up with that wonderful man now at the side of her bed, rubbing her pregnant belly, and claiming to take care of them no matter what. But he doesn’t know…
