1.             Jake sat on the bed facing her as she lay propped against some pillows on the bed. “It is so hot!” She moaned, fanning herself with her hands.
2. He rubbed her belly in slow circles pausing every once in awhile as the baby kicked and moved against the pressure he put on her belly. She loved the look of total amazement every time the baby kicked. It made the baby real, not just an idea but a real tangible living thing that would soon be there with them. The thing that would make them a real family.
3. “If it’s a girl, I hope she has your smile.” Jake said looking up and catching her smiling at him. “You know that’s what I first noticed about you? You have a gorgeous mouth.” He leaned in for a kiss. “You have always been the most beautiful woman; I hope she takes after you.”
4. “If it is a girl and she does look like me you may regret that wish when she is old enough to date.” she laughed when his smile dropped.
5. In a completely serious tone he said “Date?”
6. Keri laughed again and settled back as he resumed rubbing her belly. “When I have our son, I hope he has your sense of humor.”
7.                 “Still thinking you’re having a boy do you?” He creased his brow as the baby kicked hard against his hand. “It is awfully strong.”
8. “I know I am.  I am having a boy and he will be just like you.”
9. “Nah, you sound like you’re trying to convince yourself, hoping. When you have our daughter,” Jake smiled, “I hope she has your heart.”
10. Keri’s smile faltered as he said this. “What do you mean?”
11. “I mean your heart for people. How you care for everyone and how they all can’t help but love you.” He stopped as he realized what he had said. “I’m sorry sweetheart. That came out wrong.”
12. “It’s okay.” She said it with a smile on her face, but it was strained. “Forget about it, I’m trying to.” She rolled onto her side to face him better.
13. “Forget about it? How can you forget about that?” He said cupping her face. “I think we need to deal with this before the baby gets here. I don’t want her picking up suppressed feelings later and think anything is wrong.”
14. “You are a great man Jake; I just know this baby is yours!”
15. “Calm down Keri.” He said it soothing the few wisps of hair that had escaped her ponytail. He played with the soft curls, “You know you can’t get worked up, you need to rest.”
16. “But”
17. “No buts sweetheart,” Jake interrupted, “This baby is mine no matter what alright? No matter what the tests say. I promise I won’t leave you. Will you take them now?”
18. Keri shook her head no. “If you are staying no matter what, then why find out for sure? Why does it matter?”
