•        She awoke to another nurse checking her vital signs. She still felt a little groggy, but was told that she would take some time to work it out of her system. She noticed a couple of cops at the nurses’ station being directed to her room by the doctor himself.
•         “Good morning mam, I’m Sam Hudgens with the police department and this is my partner Mike Boskley.”
•         Rose struggled with why they brought the police to her now. Why couldn’t they just answer where James was? “I’m sorry about the cabin, but James and I needed help. We will fix everything. I didn’t think under the circumstances the owners would mind.” She trailed off as the officers looked down.
•         “No mam, they didn’t mind, but uhm, we needed to talk to you about James.”
•         “Rose we need to tell you…” He looked over at the nurse and down at the floor. “This is never easy to tell someone, but we did find James. He didn’t make it.”
• Rose felt the bottom fall from under her. Felt the pressure on her chest as she struggled to keep her breath. What were they saying! “How could you! He was right there! What do you mean you found him? He needed help but he was strong enough to make it with me and you’re saying you couldn’t save him? You’re lying”
•         “No mam, we did find him. We found him first actually. He was about a mile from the accident in a small grouping of trees. I don’t know why you thought he made it up to the cabin with you, we only found evidence of you there.” He pulled out a card bent and with writing smeared from melted snow. “He had this on him, it was for you. I just wanted to give it to you personally.”
•         Rose was crying so hard she couldn’t see clearly. They had to be wrong, James had been with her. He kept her safe, kept her going… never talked to her and never touched her, but he was there…
•         She reached out and took the envelope from officer Hodgens with shaking hands. “It was the other driver that died. That’s who you’re thinking of, not Jay… The driver must have woken up and tried to follow us…” But deep down she knew it was rue, Jay had not been with her really since that stop on the mountain.
•         “Mr. Daniels, he died too, he was alive when we found him, but never regained consciousness and then went into cardiac arrest.” Dr. Wilkins said, “You two are the only survivors of the accident. You should be happy about that.” He smiled.
•         Rose looked up at him with a curious look, tears still running down her face. “What? You said I was the only one there?”
•         “Oh well dear, I meant you and the baby. Now If you gentleman will let her rest, she has had a lot to deal with today.” He ushered the police out as Rose let her head fall back.
•         “What?” Rose looked at the nurse still in the room. “What did he just say?”
•         “Oh dear! You didn’t know?” Rebecca came around the bed to take Rose’s hand. “You’re about 6 weeks pregnant dear.” After a few moments of shocked silence Rebecca continued, “Do you need anything?”
•         Rose shook her head and Rebecca tucked her in, “”You really should get your rest then, We can catch up with you later when you have all those questions.” She patted Rose’s hand and left the room.
•         “Pregnant?” She whispered. “Pregnant…” She laid a hand on her belly and found the envelope where it fell. She opened it and pulled out the letter inside. She smiled as she remembered James loved giving her love letters. He always wrote corny little poems and stories to make her smile. This was one of those. She read through it treasuring every word. Then at the bottom, written with a different pen, were the words, “I love you so much Rosie, I will always be with you.” Rose started crying hard sobs holding the letter to her chest. She cried for James, for her and for the baby James would never get to meet.
