1.       Rose awoke slowly, little by little. She saw the paramedics over her and heard the sirens. She saw the lights flashing as she was pushed on a gurney through hospital halls. She tried to ask about James, about the mystery man, anything, but had a mask over her face and no one who listened to her weakened voice.
2.         She fell into a deep sleep, probably more medication than anything, but awoke in a small hospital room later that night. Forcing herself to focus, she saw it was well after midnight. She had an IV drip in one arm and a pulse/ox monitor on her finger, things she knew well working as a nurse herself for the last three years. Bandages covered her body and there was a cast on her wrist. She had been cleaned and well taken care of… she just didn’t remember any of it.
3.         “Hello?” Rose called. One wall of her room was glass and looked out onto the nurses’ station. She saw two nurses with paper work and a small aide dressed in bright pink scrubs. “Hello?” She called again, but her voice was weak. She found the call button and pushed it five times before a nurse was able to come in.
4.         “I’m glad you’re okay darling.” She said with a southern drawl. Her badge said Rebecca and she smiled as she checked the monitor readouts attached to Rose. “You are quite the celebrity you know that?”
5.         “What? I don’t know what you mean…” Rose tried to pull herself up.
6.         “Oh now you just rest.” Rebecca said as she pulled the cover up on Rose. “We were pretty worried there for awhile. You have been unconscious for a couple days. People keep calling wanting to know how you are doing, news crews and all. You can’t tell them that the survivor of an accident that bad, who hiked that far in your condition died after finally getting to the hospital! Oh no dearie, we will take good care of you.” She smiled again. “How are you feeling?”
7.         “What are you talking about? You must have me confused with someone. James and I were in an accident, but there were three of us. Where is James?”
8.         Rebecca’s face fell a little. She messed with some dials and started talking gibberish under her breath. “Where is James?! Where is he? They found him right? He was with me at the cabin. He was hurt bad, I know it! I told them to find him first!”
9. Rose was starting to panic so Rebecca called in the little girl in pink scrubs. “Get Dr. Wilkins, tell him Miss Adams is awake but needs to be calmed down.” The girl ran off, but shortly returned with an older gentleman in a white coat Rose assumed was Dr. Wilkins.
10. “Rose, good to see you awake. How are you feeling?” This was a bad question. Rose screamed in frustration, worry, anger and pain. They were NOT listening!
11. “Where is James!”
12.         Dr Wilkins looked over at the nurse and nodded. She emptied a needle into the IV and Rose started to feel sleepy. “When you wake up, we will talk more. The police would like to see you as well.” He left as Rose slept.
