1. Then just like that James disappeared. He was there then was just gone. She blinked hard and opened her eyes again but he was nowhere to be seen. Maybe he fell down the other side of the rise farther up.
2. “JAY?” Rose yelled but the wind took the words from her mouth and sent them in the wrong direction. She ran forward slipping on snow, ice and mud before reaching the spot she last saw him. “JAY!”
3. She reached the top of the rise and saw James at the bottom of the hill wiping snow from his backside. He stood there smiling up at her. She still couldn’t hear him, but saw him waving her down and pointing behind him. When she squinted threw the heavily falling snow she saw an answer to her prayer. A house stood about a mile away.
4. Rose fell to her rear end and followed James’s lead, pushing herself down and riding the hill to the base. James met her there and they took off at a fast pace toward the house. Rose couldn’t help but call out the whole way, knowing they wouldn’t yet be heard, but so happy her nightmare was about to end.
5. They crossed a small wooded area and came up to a fence bordering the property horse field. It was a struggle but Rose managed to climb over the fence with her broken wrist and fell to the ground on the other side. She didn’t know how James made it look so easy. They ran across the field, past a barn and climbed over the fence on the other side. Relief filled Rose as they made it to the front of the house. She pounded on the door screaming for help, not caring if she made any sense. She just wanted to see this door open and meet the people who were going to save them. To get inside where it was warm, and rest… get help.
6. After ten minutes her joy began to fade. No one was home, her good arm ached from the pounding and her voice was sore.”I’m afraid they aren’t home hun.” James said weakly from behind her. He looked paler, and so weak all of the sudden. She shouldn’t have made him run. She should have gone ahead for help for him. Damn! She was so selfish. “It’s okay Rosie, It’s not your fault, none of this is.”
7. “No!” Rose came toward him and he took a step back. “We need to get help hun.” She was determined now. Finding a rock in the snow she threw it through the window next to the door. Then after a little struggle she managed to pull herself up and inside the house.
8. Officer Boskley stood at the site of the accident, well back from the drop directing traffic and manning the radio. This left Officer Hudgens to take paramedics and the fire crew down the mountain. It wasn’t hard finding the two cars at the bottom of the ravine. At least they were cars at one point, more twisted metal and debris now.
9. “Oh my god!” One of the young paramedics whispered. “I don’t think we can do anything for anyone in those cars.”
10. “What the hell did you just say!?” Sam Hudgens screamed at the young man. “Don’t just stand there! You can’t help them if you just stand there! At least act like like you care. MOVE MOVE MOVE!” His face was turning bright red. He hated car accidents. He had lost both his parents at the age of twelve to a car accident and these cases were the hardest for him. He hoped no children were involved. “Fucking idiot! Who let that moron down here?”
11. When the paramedic ran off to see what he could do, senior paramedic Scott Baggs came over. He placed his hand on Sam’s shoulder. He had been there the day of Sam’s parents’ accident. “Calm down Sam.” But before he could say anything else he was called.
12. “Scott! Over here! We found Mr. Daniels.”
13. Piled under a heap of clothes and blankets was Mr. Daniels. “Get a stretcher over here now!” Scott yelled as he began taking inventory of the man. “I need a neck brace… Watch his leg… Get an IV started… Lift onto the stretcher on three, one, two, three…” As they worked Sam began looking for the others with his men. Someone had covered and cared for Daniels.
14. The instructions and activity around him started his adrenaline flowing again. “Michaels! Did you find anything else?”
15. “No sir, no more people, but there are a lot of foot prints and evidence of two more people. It looks like they went off together that way.”
16. “Get a group to track them! I want Cleary, Marshall, Valdez and Lange to stay and search thoroughly for anyone else. We have no idea how many were involved, so keep searching. Run any plates you find, we need to know who they are. Michaels you said two headed back?”
17. “Yes sir. That’s what it looks like. At least one of them is bleeding pretty heavily.”
18. “Get a team together. We leave in five minutes.”
