1. “Well it certainly doesn’t look good,” Mike Boskley looked over at his partner after he pulled his patrol car off to the shoulder of the road. “I don’t like the looks of this.”
2.         Mike and his partner Sam Hudgens got out of the car and walked to the site of the accident. Tire tracks led from the road onto the shoulder turned and disappeared off the side. Shattered glass and pieces of car were lying thrown about and the guard rail that was left was bent, twisted and pulled from their posts before breaking off in ragged sharp ends.
3.         As they neared the edge Sam let out a low whistle. “No it definitely doesn’t look good. We better call this in and get some rescue crews in here right away.” Then he shook his head adding, “What a way to go! The chances of surviving that are impossible! Do you think it’s the person we are looking for? Mr. Daniels?”
4. Sam looked back at Mike who had stayed back from the edge. Not that he would ever admit to his fear of heights, but there was plenty of work over by the road. “I guess we will find out, but these roads keep pretty empty, and he is the only one reported missing who would use this road.” Mike pulled out his radio and called for some backup. “Hey,” he bent down, “Sam look here.” Mike picked up a side view mirror.
5. “What do you have Mike?” Sam said stepping over.
6. “A mirror, but look, this doesn’t match the bumper over there.” He looked up “I think there might be more than one car over the edge.” As Sam went back over to the edge trying to see through the thick tangle of trees, Mike got back on the radio.”Dispatch, Officer Boskley, We may have multiple cars off of Highway 92. Send extra backup and search parties please.”
7.         James was leading Rose up the mountain at an angle. The hike was easier this way but it still took a lot longer than Rose thought it should. The drop itself had been far, and the trees and snow completely hid the accident scene from view. Even from here, knowing that not far below lay two mangled vehicles and an injured man, Rose could not find evidence of it other than her footprints leading from the woods. Trying to keep her spirits high, she convinced herself that traveling at this angle; the accident would have been more clearly evident from the actual spot of impact. She didn’t remember much but surely the cars had done some damage;
8. Looking back she was surprised to see how far they had come since their last resting spot. “James?” Rose picked up her pace to come up level with him. “Maybe we should rest.  I’m a little worried about…” she trailed off. James just looked at her.
9. She looked at him close for the first time since before his trip into the woods. He didn’t look bad and that surprised her. He was pale, but didn’t seem to be in any pain or tired at all. He still limped and stumbled along on twisted and swollen legs but seemed eager to keep moving. He held his arm close to his wounded side, but Rose saw no evidence it was still bleeding.
10. “You seem to be doing better babe!” Rose beamed. She stil felt guilty making him come.
11. He smiled at her.
12. “Do you want to stop? Eat something?”
13. He shook his head no, then echoing her earlier thought said, “We need to keep going if we want to each help before night.” Then he turned and continued up the trail.
14. She should have been happy considering the circumstances. They were alive! James was with her, helping her and as worried as she was he seemed to be doing better. if he wasn’t out of pain he was hiding it from her very well. He wasn’t bleeding anymore, thank God for that.
15. A gust of wind blew snow in her face making her shiver. Why did she feel so…. Blah? Was she sad, worried, discouraged? Rose tried but couldn’t figure out what was wrong. James was acting different. He didn’t talk to her, but maybe he was saving energy. And even though he kept looking back to check on her, he had stopped offering help, not once touching her. Maybe that’s why his side had stopped bleeding. She really needed to stop worrying.
16. She settled on feeling anxious. They had a lot riding on getting help soon. Their lives as well as the mystery man back by the car.
17. Her thoughts had slowed her down, either that or James was getting faster. When she looked up she saw James about 100 feet ahead of her waving his arms. She couldn’t hear anything he was shouting back at her through the wind. It was picking up at an alarming rate as snow began to fall as well.
18. Then just like that James disappeared.
