1.                 As Rosie waited by her log, James worked his way farther into the thickest part of the grove of trees. He needed just the right spot, one not too hard to find but far enough off the “path” they were following. He listened to Rosie rambling on behind him and knew she was scared. But she was trying so hard to be brave now and he knew she felt bad about making him come. Truth was he was glad he had come. To be with Rosie when she needed him most and to let her know things were going to be ok.
2. He stopped and braced himself against a tree. The loss of blood and the pain from his side made it almost impossible to stand up straight. But he could see it, the spot he was looking for. He stumbled forward, the world around him spinning and rushing up to meet him. Then he hit the ground hard and let out a scream as his whole body was slammed into the cold earth. He grabbed his side, then his leg, his head… It hurt so bad everywhere he didn’t know what to do first. He took a few deep breaths and pulled out the letter he had written to Rose.
3. Staring down at it he heard Rose calling out to him, “Jay? Are you okay? Need any help? I heard you scream.”
4. “NO! Stay there. I’m fine just tripped. I’ll be out in a minute.”
5. This letter he had written before they left, now he slowly opened the seal, and began to write more.
6. Rose sat on the cold log for what seemed like forever. Her body was getting stiff and she knew if they didn’t continue on soon they would be lucky just to make it to the road again by night. The thought of walking hat treacherous road at night, or worse, having to camp out on it with no protection made her shiver. She stood up to stretch. He has been gone for awhile she thought, maybe I should go check on him. And then she heard him scream.
7. “Jay? Are you okay?” she walked toward the trees. “Need any help? I heard you scream.”
8. When she received his answer she stayed by the edge of trees. James was a very strong man, but she doubted if he would ever ask for help. I’ll give him ten more minutes and then I’m going in there.  She decided. And after ten minutes she started pushing back the limbs in her way to follow James.
9. “Rosie?” She heard it from behind her and up the mountain a bit more. “There you are. I couldn’t find you where I left you.” James said looking down at her. “I thought I told you to stay put.”
10. “Jay! How did you get up there? I thought…” she looked back at the trees, “I thought you were hurt I didn’t see you come out.”
11. “I’m sorry hun, I’m a little weak so instead of just wasting energy going back and forth, I walked up while walking back.” James explained. “I didn’t mean to worry you.”
12. “Oh, it’s fine hun, you doing okay? That sounded like a painful scream.”
13. “Yep!” He smiled down to her, “Now come on! We need to hurry and get some help before dark.” With that he turned and continued picking a path up the mountain. Pointing out areas to be careful of as Rose followed.
14. She noticed that he seemed a bit quieter, and that worried her. So in her attempts to not think about the negative she kept up a steady stream of conversation. It was more to keep the quiet away so she didn’t mind much when James wouldn’t answer her.
15. “I bet there are people looking for us right now! I know we didn’t tell anyone where we were going, but when I didn’t call Andrea this morning like I was going too to tell her I couldn’t go out for our run, she probably came over. She would have waited all day and saw the mess we left. I just know she will know something is up. If not by this morning then definitely by tonight. And maybe someone is missing our mystery man! He was definitely in a hurry to get somewhere so someone noticed he was gone! Yeah… and someone will trace his steps and the accident must have left some evidence…” As she continued on she got more and more excited.
16. “Jay! Don’t you think so!” James turned to look down at her, smiled a sad little smile then turned his attention back to his climb. Something is seriously wrong she thought.
