The Mystery of Survival ~7~
|
- It took another hour before James and Rose were almost ready to leave. James had used three longer branches and the last of the torn blanket creating the splint for his leg, but was having trouble leaning over his wounded side to tie up the strips of cloth holding it in place. “Rosie, you know you are going to need to help me a lot right?”
- “Yes Jay, and I don’t mind.” She said coming over and taking over tying the straps. “The more I move, the looser I get. It’s when I sit for awhile.” She glanced up and saw fresh blood on James shirt. She gasped a little and he jumped to cover it with his hand. Rose looked back down concentrating on the last strap. “How bad is it?” She tightened the strap as much as she could before straightening up.
- “What?” Jay said struggling to a standing position with Roses’ help.
- “Don’t play innocent hun I saw the blood. Let me see.”
- “Rose it’s nothing. You don’t handle blood well, and really it’s just a scratch, I just irritated it trying to reach the last couple straps.” He looked down into her eyes. “Really don’t worry. Okay?”
- “Maybe you should stay here,” she trailed off, “Maybe you’re worse than I thought.” Rose started to tear up a little but tried desperately not to show it.
- “No babe, I’m fine. I will go with you.” He took a fourth branch and leaned heavily on it. His other ‘good’ leg was already starting to throb. “Grab the bag hun, lets go.”
- “Hun? Jay?” She was having second thoughts as she watched him struggle up the mountain in obvious pain, Was she really so self centered that she was going to make him suffer this way just so she wouldn’t be alone? She could go faster alone, and who knew what the mystery man would do when and if he woke up alone.
- She heard him cry out and do his best to cover it when he tripped. Rosie grabbed the small bag they had packed with as much food, water and supplies as they could find, and checked once more with the mystery man. “We will be back with help as soon as we can. Hold in there.” Then she straightened and began climbing after James.
- It was a hard long climb back up the mountainside. They stopped several times to rest, and each time Rose regretted begging James to come with her. James struggled to get comfortable, both of his legs were swelling and hurting him, and his side. He refused to show her but noticed as she walked behind him his constant gaurding it. And there was so much blood.
- “I need to stop again.” James said swaying a little.
- Rose looked back down, they had only climbed about 100 feet from the last stop. “Are you okay Jay? You look a little pale.” She watched as he grabbed the tree next to him.
- “I’m a little dizzy…” He trailed off.
- “Here babe, eat this.” She reached in the bag to pull out a granola bar. She had found their traveling snacks while collecting wood and had brought most of it with them.
- He ate the bar in silence. Rose pulled one out for herself and unwrapped it. “We are almost to the road! It will be so much easier then.” She said trying to distract him.
- “You think so?” He asked her tears rimming his eyes.
- “Yeah!” She said, still trying to boost his mood. “Then we follow the road back and we don’t have to climb over things or snow…”
- “You’re okay then?”
- Feeling bad about forcing him up here she looked down at her hands, “Yeah, I think we will be fine. I couldn’t have done this without you though babe. Imagine what it will be like when we get home. We wont go out for a month!”
- “I… uhhhh… I’m gonna go,” James stumbled as he went to move behind the trees. “Uhhhh…”
- “Wait. What? James where are you going?” Rose stood up.
- “I just have to go to the bathroom, wait there okay?” James said holding up his hand.
- “Oh okay.” Rose said sitting back down on the fallen log. She watched him stumble off and had a bad feeling as she watched him disappear behind the trees.

Ah, see this makes everything from the last chapter fall a little more into character for a heroine. I really like it - keep it up :-D |
