1. “Where are you?” Rose said into the phone.
2. “I’m on my way home sweetheart. We hit some bad weather in Chicago and our plane was grounded.”
3. “Oh okay. I’ve just missed you!” Rose said holding the phone with both hands.
4. “I’ve missed you too. But you know what?” James asked mischievously.
5. “What?”
6. “I have a surprise for you.” Rose could tell he was grinning.
7. “Oh really? Well I just happen to have one too.” She smiled and forgot what she was doing. She swore into the phone as she dropped the pan of water on the floor.
8. “What was that? Hun are you ok?” James asked concerned.
9. “Yeah…. Grrrrr I am so freaking clumsy! UGH!” Rose was obviously distracted.
10. “That’s one of your many charms Rosie. So are you going to tell me what the surprise is?”
11. “No!” She laughed. “If I did it wouldn’t be a surprise would it.”
12. “I guess not. I’m not telling you what mine is then.”
13. Laughing Rose said “Jay, when have you ever broken a secret?”
14. “Never.”
15. “Exactly, that’s why I didn’t ask.”
16. “I love you Rosie, I’ll see you in an hour okay?”
17. “Okay Jay, I love you too.”
18. When James returned he walked into the small living room that ran into a dining room. Everything was dark and Rosie had a beautiful candlelit dinner set out on the dining room table. “Wow… Rosie?”
19. Rose jumped on him from behind. “Jay!” She started kissing him as he turned and took her in his arms. “I missed you!”
20. “I missed you more. I hate going on business trips. But the first part of my surprise I can tell you now.”
21. “What? Tell me tell me tell me!”
22. He laughed, “Calm down, I took some time off. I actually have the next month off.”
23. “Yes!” She kissed him hard. “Okay take your coat off I made dinner.”
24. “I can see that. Why?”
25. “Part of my surprise.” She smiled up at him. “Sit down here. Ill serve you.” She went into the kitchen and grabbed the soup she had made earlier. She walked with the soup over to James and went to place the soup in front of him when she tripped and spilled it all over him.
26. “Oh!” They both yelled as James jumped up to wipe the hot soup off his lap.
27. “I am so sorry!” Rose grabbed a napkin and started to try and help.
28. “Uhhhhhh… Rosie stop!” James started to say.
29. “Babe I’m sorry! Oh my… Still think being clumsy is part of my charm?” She said looking up at him while still trying to help.
30. James grabbed her hands to stop her from what she was doing. She was so completely oblivious. He loved her. “Rosie I wanted to ask you something.”
31. “Yes Jay?”
32. “Uhmmmm… “ he laughed, “This isn’t how I planned it but,” he let go of one of her hands to reach into his pocket. When he pulled out the ring box Rose stopped moving, stopped breathing and stared at it with her mouth open. He put his hand under her chin and lifted her eyes to his. “Will you marry me?”
33. It took a minute before she started to laugh.
34. “What?” Jay asked a little hurt. “Are you saying no?”
35. He was so cute, she hardly ever saw him nervous. “No!” She yelled. Then she jumped up and went around to where her plate had been set up. She reached under her napkin and pulled out her own box. “My surprise…” Rose trailed off, “Was to ask you to marry me. A little different but, I love you Jay.”
36. She laughed when he smiled and pulled her to him. He held her close, kissed her, she shivered… Why was she cold? She opened her eyes to look at James. But instead of James, she was opening her eyes to her nightmare, and waking up from her dream.
