A Daughters Love (end)
|
- It was late the next afternoon when Jenny saw the doctor again. She was feeling so happy. With Andrew back, things seemed to be falling into place. She had slept better knowing she was no longer alone. She had her brother back, the old Andrew she remembered who was kind and patient, loving. He took over with the doctors, understanding that they had always scared Jenny, and seemed to know exactly what needed to be done.
- The doctor had come out early that morning before the surgery to tell them again that this was the best chance that their mom had. He had also told them it was a miracle in its own, to have just received a matching donor so quickly. He had looked at Jenny then and said he was sorry that sometimes you have to lose to win, but it would make it all the more special in the end.
- She had shrugged off the comment not understanding, and just reveled in the idea that they were finally getting somewhere with her mom. She stood up with her brother when the doctor came in that afternoon. He had a smile on his face and shook Andys hand when he said “Everything seemed to go well. We won’t know for sure for a couple of days, but if she responds well then we can probably wake her up in a couple of days.” He patted Jenny on the shoulder and said again how lucky they were. Then he turned back toward the ICU and left them.
- “AAAAAAHHHHHHHH!!!” Jenny screamed jumping up into Andrews arms. They laughed and cried holding one another tight. “It’s going to be ok! Oh Andrew, it’s going to be ok!” Jenny couldn’t think of anything else to say and Andrew just kept repeating “Thank you Lord!” over and over again, rocking his sister back and forth.
- Later that day while waiting to see their mom, Jenny went to one of the courtesy phones to call Joe. She had been thinking about him on and off all day. They had made plans to see each other next week but she couldn’t stop thinking about him. She wanted to share the good news about her mom with him, to tell him her brother was back. If anyone could understand how wonderful family was right now it was him, and she just missed him. Funny, she thought, I miss him so much and its only been a day. We got so close so fast. And as she thought about it she knew it was because he was meant to be a part of her life always. He was important.
- “Ugh!” Jenny groaned into the phone the sixth time.
- “What’s wrong?” Andrew asked coming up behind her.
- “I can’t get through to Joe, The guy I told you about. I wanted you to meet him.”
- “Sorry Jen, but they have mom back in her room. Call him again later.” He pulled her away from the phone and under his arm. They walked down the familiar halls to their mothers’ room. Marcy was there setting the last of the equipment in place.
- “Oh, I was just finishing up. I will get out of your way so you can visit, but you really only have ten minutes ok?” She looked from Andrew to Jenny. Her eyes softened. “I’ll see you outside in a few.”
- She was there the minute Jenny stepped out of the room.
- “I’m sorry…. Was I late?”Jenny asked, afraid she had made the nurse upset.
- “No dear, I Just wanted to talk to you.” She looked a little nervous, “I know this must be a hard time and all, losing someone you care about is never easy, but all the nurses here think it’s so special what he did.”
- Jenny looked at her confused for a minute. “What who did… Marcy my mom is fine…” She trailed off.
- “Your boyfriend dear, the young man who came the other day. I know we were all shocked to learn he and his little girl died in that car accident, but no one could believe he was the donor that would save your mom!” She continued on not seeing the shock on Jenny’s face. “How you are handling that so well…. If you need anything you just let us know. You are a very strong young woman.”
- Jenny couldn’t believe it. She ran back to the phone and started dialing Joe again. She was wrong! She didn’t know what she was talking about! But again she got the familiar tone and the recorded voice telling her that her call could not go through at this time.
- “Jen? There you are I was wond…” Joe broke off, “Jen what’s wrong?” He pulled her off the floor where she had fallen. “What is it?!”
- She looked up into his face. “He’s dead Andrew!”
- “Who is Jen? Calm down, tell me.”
- “I can’t calm down” she said, “I can’t just calm down! Joe and.. and little Sandy…”She looked up at his concerned face. “Andy, moms alive cuz Joe is dead!”
- Andrew held his sister as she cried into his chest, running his hands down her hair. “Shhhh it’s all going to be alright Jen, it’s all going to be okay…” He held her there until she had calmed down enough to take her home.
*Three weeks later*- “Where do you want these flowers mom?” Jenny said from behind a big vase full of pink roses. “And you could help a little Andy, it wouldn’t hurt my feelings any.”
- “Well if I help you who is going to be right here with mom making sure she gets everything she needs?” Andy teased from their moms bedside.
- “Now you two…” her mom scolded mockingly, her voice still rough from being unused.
- “You need more water mom” Andrew held the glass up for their mom as Jenny sat the roses down on a window sill in her new hospital room. Her family she thought with a smile. They were small, they had their problems, but they were hers. And they were together. Joe… She could never thank him. He gave her back her family.
- She sat back and watched, noticing things she never knew she missed. The way her brother always looked at her out of the corner of his eyes when he was talking with someone else. He had said it was because he needed to keep an eye on her, but she knew it was because he was watching out for her.
- Or the way her mom always played with the locket with a picture of their family in it that her father had given to her on their last wedding anniversary. Yep, even though she wasn’t allowed any jewelry now, her moms hand played with her gown where the locket would have been.
- Joe… They say it’s a miracle. You are my miracle. She spoke to Joe in her head. Thank you! There is nothing I can do or say, but thank you. I will never forget you. You gave me so much then gave me back my family. I hope you’re happy and that you are with Sandra again. You are my guardian angel.
