1.         Rose woke slowly fighting to open her eyes. At first she didn’t remember what had happened. She lay in the dark, cold and in pain. Her head hurt horribly. She thought maybe she had fallen asleep and was just waking up with one of her migraines, but then where was she and why was she so cold? She reached out to pull herself up and screamed in pain. It wasn’t just her head but her whole body that hurt.
2.         She lay still, careful not to move as she searched her memory for where she was. “….I love you too Rosie, so much.” James, the last thing Rose remembered was him holding her. Where was he? “Jay?” She called out but even that seemed to hurt everywhere.
3.         Slowly Rose reached her arm up to her head. She pulled her hand back and saw what she thought was blood. It was so dark it was hard to make anything out, but blood would make sense. Her wrist was throbbing and seemed swollen. She didn’t doubt that it was most likely broken. As carefully as she could she reached for her right shoulder. It hurt but what bothered her was the pressure on it. With shaking fingers she explored her surroundings and her situation, trying hard not to panic. But with each new discovery, that was getting harder to do.
4.                 From what she could tell, besides numerous cuts and scrapes all over her body, her right shoulder had been pinned to the seat by a part of the car roof. It had been smashed down in many places but luckily it was only her shoulder that had been pinned. Her left leg was stuck between the seat she had been laying on and the front dashboard. It must have been pushed all the way back during the crash… or the fall. Rosie decided she didn’t care as long as she could get her leg out. Her right thigh had a gash in it up high by her hip that seemed deep, but it was hard to get a good idea being pinned down.
5.         “Jay?... James! Where are you? Babe I’m scared answer me!” She held her breath and listened for an answer. Was he okay? “James?!” There! She thought to herself, I know I heard him. I need to get to him I think he is hurt.
6.         James was nowhere in the car that she could see. There was a hole where the door had been and the cars frame had bent. Rose prayed that James had been thrown because she seemed to occupy the only safe place in the car, and even then she was in some pretty tight places. “I’m coming babe…” she gritted her teeth and tried to move, “…just… hold… on!” It took several attempts but Rose managed to push the seat back with her right leg enough to free her left leg. The knee was in bad shape and she only prayed she would be able to walk on it later.
7.         Rose took a few minutes to rest before attempting to free her shoulder. The effort on her leg had caused the gash to start bleeding. She could feel the warm blood run down her cold leg and the pain to shoot up her hip. After awhile she heard someone groan and the thought of James made her renew her escape efforts. She started to push herself down as far as she could against the seat and then move out from the roof against her shoulder. She moved about an inch when she stopped and used her left arm to sweep away as much of the glass as she could.
8.         She didn’t think of the pain or the cold, she tried not to think of how they were going to get help, or how they were so far from that help. Instead she thought of how she was grateful they would be ok. Again she heard the pained cry from outside and continued saying “I’m coming Jay! Can you hear me? Are you okay?” She only got a small groan in return.
9.         It took about 30 min for Rose to work herself free from the remains of the car. She had no idea what time it was or how they were going to get help but knew they needed to get some fast. With tears running down her bruised cheeks, she pulled herself onto shaky legs then collapsed in the snow.
