• “No.” He looked down at Sandy. “She will be hungry to when she wakes up. Why don’t we go get something to eat?”
• “Oh,” Jenny looked at the doors to the ICU, “I would, but…”
• “But what?”
• “What if my mom wakes up? I want to be right here when that happens.”
• Joe looked at her until she looked back at him. “She is in a drug induced coma right?”
• “Yeah.”
• “So she wont wake up unless they let her right? Do you think there is a chance of that happening anytime soon?”
• “Well no. I guess not.” She looked down at herself and laughed nervously. “I’m a little rumpled. I wont embarrass you?”
• “No,” he laughed, “I promise you by the time the three of us are done eating Sandy and I will be wearing most of her food. The question is, are you sure you want to go out with us?”
• Jenny’s stomach growled again louder. “Does that answer your question?”
• “Great I know a perfect little diner not far from here. Shouldn’t be too crowded and we can talk a little more.” He picked up Sandy who was starting to stir on the couch. “If you don’t mind I will drive.”
• Half an hour later they were sitting in a booth at the small diner looking over the menus.Jenny decided on a chicken sandwich and coke, placed her order and sat back to study Joe for the first real time. This was the first time she was sitting face to face with him and able to take a close look. He was a very handsome man, although he looked tired as well.
• “So what do you think? Neat huh?” He said when their waitress left.
• She did like it, anything was better than the hospital cafateria, but he looked so smug she couldn’t help but tease him. “Well, it could use some cleaning…” and Sandy piped in with some gibberish that sounded like an agreement. Jenny couldn’t help but laugh. She could really like this little girl. She winked at Sandy.
• “Both girls turned against me now! I am your daddy always take my side ok!” He tickled her. Then sat back as she played with her. Kids were so fun. She was getting into a serious game with Sandy when she heard a waitress stop at their table.
• “Oh my god!! Joe?” She looked only briefly at Jenny then continued, “Haven’t seen you here since forever!”
• “Yeah, it’s been awhile.” Joe looked a little uncomfortable.
• “Omg! You guys had your baby! She is so cute!...” The waitress went on and on as Jenny realized she was someone from the past he didn’t want to talk about. Her thoughts were confermed when the waitress asked “Wher is Sandra by the way? I haven’t seen her in forever.”
• “She is resting.” Is all Joe said, and promised to bring her in next time.
• How sad. Jenny’s heart went out to him as she saw him struggle with his tears. It must be like reliving the same painful memory over and over every time he had to explain what had happened. “Sorry about that.
• I didn’t think someone would recognize me, maybe I need to wait three more years.”
• “You’re pretty popular!” She joked trying to lighten the mood.
• He changed topics completely. “So are you in school?”
• “Yes.” She even had one of the classes her mom taught. Don’t think about it. She told herself. You both just want to forget for awhile. “What about you?”
• “I dropped out.”
• “Oh!” So much for that topic.
