I boarded the bus without taking a backwards glace, as I did not have the power in my heart to look at Shane. I immeadiatly regreted what I had told him, but I knew I could not take it back. The damage was done. I took my usual seat next to Yasmin in the middle of the bus.
As the bus started toward the school, the missing laughter about Shane's jokes was taking it's toll on me. I couldn't stand it any longer. I'm sorry, I'm sorry, I'm sorry. I thought, hoping that they would somehow reach his mind, like some kind of telepathic connection. I slumped down in my seat, paying no attention to Yasmin's looks of confusion. "Don't ask." I told her, and she said nothing, dropping the subject.
As we pulled up to Harial Middle, I noticed Jessie standing there, waiting impatiently, as if she were waiting for a long time. Shane got off first. I noticed that he was trying to avoid Jessie, but to no avail. Jessie skipped to Shane, but he shrugged her off and walked not over to his friends to talk about World of Warcraft, as usual, but over to the trees.
I walked slowly off the bus, shooting knifes out of my eyes at Jessie, who had a hurt look on her face. She returned the dirty look. My thoughts returned to that dream with Shane and Jessie, but pushed the thought of Shane out of my mind. You don't like him anymore remember? I repeated to myself as I sat down next to Beth.
"Hey Heather!" Beth said.
"Huh? Oh, hi." I returned her greeting, but not so kindly.
"Do you know what happened to my brother? I saw him walking toward the trees." she asked.
"Hmm, i dunno lemme go see." I said almost eagerly, (I don't like him anymore, I don't like him...)
"Want some company?" beth asked.
"Nah, it's okay. I'll go. I need to talk to him."
"Listen, I heard all about what happened at the dance, and I was wunnering what happened this morning. Yasmin told me that you and Shane talked, but she couldn't hear."
I told Beth what happened after the dance until that morning.
"Ohhhh, burn!!!" Beth exclaimed when I got to the part when I rejected Shane's kiss. "But, really, you should go talk to him. Ask him if he still likes you. I mean, I would know, im his sister."
"okay tell you what happens later." i called over my shoulder at Beth, while walking towards the trees where Shane was sitting with his head down, tears rolling down his perfect face.
