“Kiersten......... Kiersten......... Kiersten!! Wake up!”

Kiersten jolted out of bed and smacked her head on the bottom of the top bunk.

“Fuck! God that hurt. What do you want?” she cursed, rubbing her forehead.

“I was just thinking.... You know Nicky? Do you think he’d go out with me if I asked him?” Kiersten’s older sister, Jacoba, leaned over the edge of the mattress.

“I dunno, how should I know? I don’t even know who that is.” The clock read 3:16 am and Kiersten could barely keep her eyes open. “And why are you up? Go back to bed,” she grumbled.

“I really want to know what you think. You know who Nicky is, he’s in the band. Plays flute?”

“Any guy that plays flute is not a good idea. He’s probably gay.”

“No, he’s not, he’s got a girlfriend.”

“What! You can’t go out with a guy with a girlfriend anyway!”

“Who cares? She won’t know.”

“You’re such a bitch.”

“I am not. Don’t be a jerk. I’m sorry I even woke you up. Next time I have something to tell you I just won’t.”

“Yeah, I bet,” Keirsten whispered. Jacoba told her everything, whether she wanted to know or not. “I don’t care. But its a bitchy thing to do to let another guy cheat with you. If your boyfriend was cheating with some other girl, wouldn’t you be majorly pissed at her?”

“No.”

“Even if she knew that he was going out with you?”

“Yeah well....So? It’s not me. It doesn’t matter.”

“Yeah. Bitch.”

“You make me feel so bad.”

“Good. I’m going back to sleep. I’ll talk to you in the morning.”

“’K goodnight.”

“’Nite.”

Kiersten woke again at five thirty; her alarm screaming in her ear. She hauled herself out of bed and into the bathroom, flipped the lightswitch and ran the water for a shower. She didn’t even bother to open her eyes; she knew where everything was. Peeling off her pajamas, she stepped into the shower and let the hot water pour over her. Fifteen minutes later she was finished and began her search for clothes. Why couldn’t she be neater? She found something on the floor and pulled it over her head. Pants. Kiersten pulled them off and slipped them over her legs instead. Now fully dressed, she stumbled down the stairs and seated herself infront of the computer in the family room. She clicked up a window to check if that guy from Scotland had written back. Her parents didn’t approve of her talking to him, but he lived in Scotland so it was okay as far as Kiersten was concerned. He had. She quickly typed a message back, then hit delete. There wasn’t much time before her bus came and she needed more than a few minutes to come up with a truly good response.

Jacoba smiled at her from the kitchen table, her mouth filled with cereal.

“Hey,” she said, letting some milk dribble over her lip.

“Hey.” Kiersten eyed up the cereal box. Too many calories. She opened the fridge and plucked out an apple. On second thought... Kiersten looked down at her stomach. I’m not that hungry, she told herself.

“Girls! The bus is going to be here any second! Get out by the stop!” her mother called. The two girls grabbed their backpacks and purses and headed out the door.

“Wait! Kiersten, where’s your lunch?”

“In my backpack. Don’t worry.” Kiersten lied.

Once on the bus Kiersten tuned out to the chatter around her and stared out the window. She just felt so dead and separated from the world. Today was going to be one of those days.
