Memories ch. 31

About five minutes later dad reached the hospital. We walked straight through to the information desk. My dad asked what room my mom was in and the nurse told us room 403. After fifteen minutes of looking we walked inside and my mom had bandages, tubes, and a IV bag. The doctor said she had been hit by another car, that my mommy had told him a part of what happened.

"Sir, your wife told me she was on the highway coming back home when this gray sports car swerved into the side of her car. After what happened the car speed away. After a short while of sitting in her car, a car pulled over. There was a woman who came and pulled her out and brought her here. Her name was Ms. Thorn. Your wife is in critical condition."

I looked over at mommy and she was barely awake, her eyes were slightly open. My dad talked to my mom for a minute and seemed very sad. When he couldn’t take it he turned away with tears. At that point I stood on a stool and peered over to see my mom looking up at me.

"Sam...", she said with a very low voice like a tiny whisper. I was sad at that, for the first time in a very long time had mommy called me Sam.

"Yes mommy?"

"I love you and your father very much"

"I love you too mommy"

Mommy smiled at me and then continued, "I will always love you, remember that ok?" I saw a tear drop down from the side of her face.

"Ok mommy"

She smiled again and then she closed her eyes and the heart beat monitor went still. The doctors came running and pushed me out of the way, one nurse picked me up and carried me outside. I kept squirming around and screaming for my mommy.

Dad was still inside the room, and the nurse stayed with me. I didn’t want her. All I wanted was to see my mommy. I was crying, and the nurse picked me up again. She patted my hair, and told me to stop crying. I didn’t listen to her, I jumped out of her hands and ran to the closed door. I turned the knob and pushed the door. I saw many nurses and the doctor hovering over my mommy. I crept in with no one knowing except the nurse. While I was standing there, and the nurse trying to catch up with me, I saw the doctor give up.

Dad was crying much harder now. Before he had been crying small tears, and now he was hunching over, holding his hands to his face and crying. A couple of nurses went to my dad trying to calm him, but my dad just pushed them away. After seeing him like that, I ran over to him and held onto his legs. He looked over at me and leaned down to my level. He pulled me close to him, and held me for what seemed forever. When he seemed calmer, he picked me up and carried me outside to one of the chairs.

"Sam, wait here, I have to speak to the doctor." He went to the doctor and the doctor answered all of his questions. He came back to me and carried me outside. I realized we were going back to the car and I hadn’t said bye to mommy. I cried again into dad’s shoulder, he didn’t pay any attention to me crying. He placed me back into the car again and drove home. When we got home, he tucked me into bed and I rolled over. I heard him creek out of my room. Then I fell asleep.
