A Rising Dawn: Chapter Three
|
Dawn put on her silk coat, pulling her hair up with a black ribbon into a flimsy bun. She stretched her arms out, tired from her slumber. Waltzing over to the black silk curtains, she pulled them open, revealing a dazzling moon that shone brightly against the surface of the Pacific Ocean. The stars that littered the dark sky around the full moon stood out in high contrast among the empty space. Her dark eyes fell upon the shimmering water, watching how the calm waves crashed upon her ship's sides as they glided across the water. Hearing a knock on the door, she slipped on her small shoes, walking over to answer the caller.
"Captain, your meal is ready. Shall I have it sent up to your room?" asked an attendant. Her shady eyes revealed her empty stomach, while her wispy red hair that showed that she had hurried to put it up showed how eager the girl was to scramble down to the mess hall for her meal.
"No, I will eat with the rest of the crew members today. Wake my first mate and tell her to hurry and dress accordingly." Dawn commanded the attendant. The small girl shivered as she gazed into her captain's eyes, an evil prescence buried under years of service aboard The Pallor Rose.
Dawn walked out the door and into the crowded hall. She briskly walked passed all the crew members as they parted so their captain could be first to eat her meal. Pushing open the steel doors to the mess hall, Dawn took her seat at the front of the dining room, waiting for her plate to be set down in front of her. A young woman placed a goblet full of a dark red drink in front of her. The captain looked up to see her first mate's face glaring down at her. The woman's black hair was pulled back tightly, leaving no stray strands.
"You should tell them after they have had their meal, you do not want to make them upset when their stomachs are empty." said Merwin, her eyes still dark from not eating.
"I know. I still have yet to consume my meal." Her stomach growled just as a large blue china plate filled with scrumptious food was placed down in front of her. Merwin received the same treatment, though her plate was slightly smaller.
Soon, both plates were empty and Dawn began to notice other crew members emptying their plates, gossip floating up from their mouths.
"Attention all crew! I have some bad news," exclaimed Dawn, tapping her fork against her goblet, "In recent times, you have seen me speak with several clairvoyants to see if any had news about the future of our people. The most recent, Jasper Heath, revealed nothing more than any of the others," she said, briefly thinking of her nightmare, "So, in the name of the Gods of the Kindred, we must continue the journey to protect the Pendant of the Vampyres, the odyssey our husbands left for our hands. We must fight to protect our people from the Enemy."
