A Rising Dawn

Romance Created on 2-27-08 Views(61) Story Rating G

Jasper raced to the edge of the boat dock, nearly falling off the edge as he came to the end. Frantically, he reached into his burlap sack and pulled out a small ring. He called to the small dinghy leaving the town of Brookvillle.

"Dawn! Marry Me! I love you Dawn! Marry Me!" He screamed at the top of his lungs to a woman standing on the ship, her hair waving in the wind, clouding her expression. She did not reply, but instead stared at her lover, cursing his determination. The man was not one to give up.

"I am engaged already to another dear Jasper, it cannot be between us," she calmly announced just within the audible range of the proposer on the dock. He dropped his hands to his sides and fell to his knees. She could not bear to see him in this state, for he was one of the few of her victims in which she truly did love, so she sank to the bottom of her boat, her coat flailing in the stormy breeze.

Jasper's eyes became clouded, his heart broken with the simple statement that his love had presented to him. He let the ring drop through the cracks of the wooden slats of the dock. Falling to his knees, he let out a sob. His love, to which he had proposed after a mysterious secret was revealed between them, had left him for her own betrothed. The ship sailed away, it's sail brazened with the emblem of a pirate...

                       ---

"Captain, the ship has set course for Somberland, though the seas threaten to crash us into the rocky shores of Atilla." reported an officer of the ship, The Pallor Rose, to the Captain, Dawn Trelan. Pulling her hair up into a flimsy bun, the strongly built woman turned her attention to the wheel of the small ship.

"Captain, if I may ask, who was that fool on the dock?" inquired the same officer with an inquisitive face.

"You may not ask, for you were warned that improper questions lead to a day and night in the brigg." said Dawn, leaning to the right as the ship steered into the moonlight. Her eyes glowed in the night a deep green, while her skin echoed all light and became whiter that milk.

The officer agreed that the question was out of order and walked briskly away to other duties she had planned for that night.

Turning her full attention to the wheel of the ship, Dawn left the memory that was still freshly etched into her mind behind. She had been through that before, but the most recent time had struck a hard blow. The man who had proposed to her had been a childhood friend, one who loved her dearly for all his life. Now he had no more than a blackened heart, one of which could never be recovered. He had learned more than Dawn had planned to tell him, and that was why she must leave, to escape into the moonlight of an unnatural night...
