Just Memories 2

Creative Created on 2-1-08 Views(42) Story Rating G

Holding my stuffed bear, I sleep in my daybed, the Rugrats comforter slipping down to the shaggy carpeting. I am dreaming about my family, how they seem so distanced from one another. My brother, absorbed by his games and wrestling, my mother, too terrified at times to even speak, and my father, a gentle giant who has a rage of many warriors. And me, a lonely seven year old girl listening to her parents argue everyday all day. I look forward to going to school, to escape this madhouse of roller-coaster emotions.

Waking with a start, my body is trembling with fright. A thunder storm has crashed upon our house here out in the woods, creating a terrifying image of lightening against the birch trees. I grab my bear, and shuffling out of the room, I hastily run down the hallway into my parents bedroom. My mother knows what I want and separates the sheets so that I can climb into the bed with my parents. My father snores, while my mother calms my nerves. They are peaceful together at night, but it seems the daylight brings all but happiness between these Spartans.

The morning brings burnt pancakes and sausage links, a breakfast usual to this home. My father watches the moving screen on the television, my brother in his room. My mother eats at the table with me, reading a small romance novel that tells tales of dreams.  I finish my breakfast and wait for the cursing and yelling to arrive.

When my father searches for his tools to finish a lost project, my mother remembers not where she put them, and the fires start again. I grab my ball and jog outside, our two mutts greeting me with tongues and kisses. I am at peace, though my parents may not be.
