Finding Love under the Mexican Sun (Whole story)

“What? Mr. Corpus sold the resort?” I almost dropped the cup of coffee in my hand in astonishment. Novae, my co-employee at the beach resort where I work, passed by the receptionist’s table and broke the news to us. “What else?” she said, “I don’t know if the person who will buy this establishment will be as nice as Mr. Corpus.” “But… why? This resort had been my second home since I came from Manila. He cant’ just sell it to anyone; doesn’t he think he will just throw away his sweat and tears if he would do that!” I felt enraged with Novae’s news.“Oh, stop it, Faye! Do you have ten million pesos to buy this thing?” she said apathetically, “You better prepare yourself and treat the new owner as Mr. Corpus himself. Maybe he’s not as bad as you think… maybe.” Novae went to the restaurant and cleared the tables as the customers left. I was wondering how things would be if the new owner comes. Will he change the rules in the resort? What will happen to Mr. Corpus now that he has sold his only “treasure”?

I have been working as a receptionist in this resort for two years now. I don’t know why I am working here. My salary is just enough for me, considering the fact that I graduated in Commerce. Maybe it’s because of the fascinating view of the beach and the appealing waves of the sea, which come to shore and drench the sand every minute. Suddenly, Mr. Corpus came and I asked him if the news was true. “Yes, Faye. After everything is settled, I will go to the U.S. to stay with my children there,” he answered, “The truth is, the new owner will come to the resort tomorrow and look around.” I felt disappointed of what he told me. He tapped my shoulders and said, “I know you have learned to love this resort and I know that whoever will be your boss, I suppose you will continue to support him and take care of this resort.” Then he went to his office. Mr. Corpus has a fatherly attitude that I cannot resist and which I know I will surely miss.

The resort is a haven where tourists can find relaxation and comfort. It is where retreats take place and a place of refuge for those who seem lost. I was put in charge of supervising the closing of the office and the restaurant before we go home every evening. This had been a work-turned-habit. Novae, the chef, and Chris, the bartender, are always with me. I overheard Novae telling Chris, “Pare, why don’t you tell her the truth? When she goes home, go with her and tell her about what you feel. Don’t be too naïve.”
“Alright,” Chris said seemingly shy. Chris is handsome and has a good body build. He is also intelligent but is very much timid. He graduated in Management, and like me, he feels happier whenever he’s here at the resort. He is the bartender but he works all-around: as a janitor, a watcher, and sometimes, as a lifesaver, too, when someone’s drowning. We are very much alike in many ways and I can’t say anything against him.
As I was expecting, he accompanied me home. “I hope the new owner of the resort is a good man.” I said. “Hope so.” He was hiding something. I think I knew it since then but he had no guts to tell me directly. “I want to ask you something, if you don’t mind.”
“Of course not, what’ is it?” I asked. “Why aren’t you married?” “Ha? Ah… I don’t know. Maybe I haven’t found the right man for me yet or… or I…I can’t love a man just like that.” I was perplexed. I have not controlled the words I uttered. I know Chris likes me and I know he was, in a way, hurt with what I said. But the truth is I cannot forget the man I loved before… and the man my heart is aching for until now – it’s Jayson.

I went to the resort early. I thought I was earlier than anyone of my co-employees but I realized Novae was there already. She gestured and mouthed me to come immediately.
“Why? I’m not yet late, I think!” I opposed. “Yeah, I know. It’s just that the new owner of the resort will be coming over and the old boss said let’s put everything in order.” She turned around and added, “Oh, don’t forget about the statement of account. The old boss said he needs those things.” Later, a stunning Ford parked at the resort’s parking lot. Right away I thought it may be the new owner. Mr. Corpus hurriedly went to the man coming out of the car and greeted him, “Good morning, Mr. Benitez. It’s good you came. Welcome to my – ah, your resort!” “Oh, thank you. I am with my stepson but he said he is tired. I told him to rest. I hope he could come later to see this place. It’s magnificent!” Mr. Benitez said excitedly. “Come, let’s look around. Aside from the beach, it has four swimming pools; one of which is for hot bathing. We also have cottages and a restaurant for our guests and customers.” Mr. Corpus told him proudly. I was pleased with the reaction of Mr. Benitez. The two old men walked away and I thought Novae could be right. He may not be as bad as we all think he was. I supposed we will all like him.
“Hey, Chris went with you last night, didn’t he?” Novae said teasingly, “What? Did he tell you something?” “Oh, Novae, it’s too early for that. Why don’t you ask him? I’m sure he’ll tell you.” I felt annoyed but I tried not to show it to Novae. “It’s just a joke, okay? Don’t be mad.” She went away laughingly. I wondered what my life would be if Chris would be my boyfriend. I hate myself because every time I want to think about my love life, my past keeps haunting my mind… I remember the time when Jayson asked me for a date. I agreed and felt excited. He said he will be fetching me from my apartment. I thought it was just a simple date; if ever it was a special one, I even thought it to be an engagement date. He was not acting unusual that day but I considered it only as excitement on his part. But the day came and I had waited for two hours. He did not come. From then on, I never heard anything from him. I was hurt. I cried… but no Jayson came and no explanation why it happened so hastily. Or even if he comes and tells me everything, I never wanted to hear something that will hurt my heart. So I decided to go away and found this very scenic resort. I put all my concern and attention on my job as the receptionist of the resort. “You are reason enough for me to go on living… You are reason enough for me to smile again… In a world where hearts are broken every now and then, one finds reason enough in you to love again…” “Novae! What’s that?!” I yelled, “I told you to never ever play that song on the Videojet again!” I went to where the sound is coming from, and I was shocked to see someone…“J-Jayson…?”“Hello Faye, nice to see you! What are you doing here?” Jayson was sitting in a chair near the Videojet. “No! What are you doing here?” Are you the one playing that song on the Videojet?” I asked.
“Oh, I’m just here for a vacation. I’m sorry, but I just wanted to hear that song once again, so I played It.” he answered. “Hey Jayson, there you are!” Mr. Benitez came stretching his arms to hug him. Mr. Corpus was following him. “Hi Dad, sorry I’m late, I took a bath first before coming here.” Jayson said smilingly, “I never thought life was this big. It’s really a small world!” “Well, I thought you’ll come later. Anyway, this is Mr. Corpus. Mr. Corpus, my stepson, Jayson Vicente.” The old man introduced him.
“Ah, nice meeting you. This is my resort’s receptionist, and at the same time, my personal secretary, Ms Faye Buenaventura.” Mr. Corpus said. “Ah! So you’re the secretary ha?” Jayson said, still with his arrogant smile. “We’ve met, sir.” I politely said.
“Really?” Mr. Benitez said, “I guess our business orientation will be very good. I hope we will be comfortable with each other!” Comfortable? Me? With Jayson? No!
I do not know what to think during that time. I felt so irritated by his presence. But, on the other hand, I felt so agitated to see Jayson; and once again, my heart beat faster and I felt so weak. How can I ever prove to him that I survived even without him by my side when my heart still cries for him?

After the luncheon meeting, Jayson asked if he could talk to me and brief me being my new boss. But the truth is he never made any briefing or whatever… “You know what, Faye? You’re still beautiful and I never expected to see you again. Sorry for all the things I have done. I know it’s my entire fault to leave without telling you why.” His eyes were hoping for something, “Please understand that I never wanted any of this to happen.”
I almost cried but I wanted to show him that I was never crushed when he went away.
“Ah, is that it?” I answered proudly, “It’s alright. I’m okay now.” Silence enveloped that moment. I wanted to cry but I was holding back the tears... until it flowed down my cheeks. “But tell me,” I’m now confused. “Why? What happened?” I burst into tears.
“Faye, I’m asking for your forgiveness. Before we met, I already had a girlfriend. I loved her and we planned to get married. Until you came… I guess I fell in love with you, too.”
“Ha, ha, ha!” I laughed bitterly. “Please Faye, believe me.” He said, “When I was about to tell you the truth, I can no longer hold on, so I never went to see you. I had to choose and…” “And you have to choose her, is that it?” I cut in angrily. He can’t answer. I was hurt but I need to be strong. I passed through this kind of trial before, why can’t I pass it now? I calmed myself and wiped my tears, “Well, I’m okay now. Are the two of you married?” “Not yet,” he said softly, “but the wedding will be barely two months from now.” There was a part of me rejoicing in what I heard. Yes, I have almost two months to execute my plan… I will get Jayson back. I will make him fall in love with me again.
“Faye, I’m confused.” “Why?” “Because… because I think I’m beginning to feel again the emotions I have felt before with you and I know it’s not right. The wedding is approaching so fast, and besides… God knows how I really love her.” That’s it Jayson, I told myself. I want to get you back… I want you to fall in love with me again. And with this second chance given to me, I will never let you go… ever! “Tomorrow, Natalie will be coming here with me.” “Natalie? That’s her name, isn’t it?” “Yes. She said she wants to see the resort. And if she will like this place,” he stopped as if withholding something, “we’ll make it the reception of our wedding.” Every time Jayson talks about her and their wedding, I can feel his happiness and contentment; but the wound in my heart aches, and I still hoped a miracle would happen.

I did not sleep well that night because the memories kept coming back. What does she look like? Whoever she is, whatever she is, I am determined to get Jayson back.
I hurriedly went to the resort the following day. Novae and Chris were not yet there, so I went straight to the office. I tried to concentrate on the documents and papers I was holding, but Jayson’s face always comes to my mind.  “Wow, Faye! You look pretty and blooming, too.” Novae almost startled me. “Novae don’t ever do that again.” “Ha, ha. Why are you so busy with those papers again?” Novae teased me once more.
“Novae?!?” I pretended to be angry. “Okay,” she smiled, “My friend here wants to tell you something.” “Err-Faye,” Chris said timidly. “Yes?” “I want to ask you to go out with me for a date. Do you mind?” “Uhm, I’m sorry Chris.” As much as possible, I don’t like to disappoint Chris, “But I – I can’t say anything for sure right now. I – I have many things to do and…” “It’s alright.” he said. “Don’t’ worry. I’ll try to finish everything today and see if we’ll still have some time so I can go out with you.” “Okay,” he smiled and said, “I’ll get back to you later. I’ll just go to the beach.”

At about six o’clock in the evening, Novae came telling me that she saw Jayson’s car coming. I went straight to the balcony and I saw him. “Hi Faye!” he shouted, “Natalie is with me.” I just smiled but my knees were trembling. I did not know what to do.
I was surprised. Where is she? What is she waiting for? Is she waiting for Jayson to open the door for her? Hah! She’s odd! I saw Jayson go at the back of the car and brought out something. I was dumbfounded. He held a wheelchair. He opened the door, carried a pretty-faced woman out of the car and put her on the wheelchair! I did not understand at first. But I realized that the woman whom Jayson fell in love with, and the woman whom I got jealous with, was lame. “Faye, this is Natalie Marie, my fiancée. Natalie, this is my friend, Faye Buenaventura.” Jayson said. I felt embarrassed with myself. What was I thinking? I designed a very rude plan! “H-Hi, nice meeting you.” I offered a handshake. “I’m very sorry, I did not know. Jayson did not tell me about you’re…” “Well, it’s okay. I have been like this since I was a child.” Natalie answered. “And congratulations for being the new manager of this resort!” “What? New Manager? I can’t understand!”
“Yes, you heard her right.” Jayson explained, “Daddy and I were talking about it last night. Since Mr. Corpus was going to America and he’ll leave sooner or later, we decided to keep you the manager of the resort.” “But…” I felt shocked! “No buts! I know you are very capable of doing it because I know you love this resort very much.” “Are you sure?”
This is not for old’ time’s sake, you hear? I know you can do it!” “Thank you,” I can’t utter the words, “Please, please help yourself, I think I forgot to finish something very important…” I left them without waiting for their reply. I need to find someone!
I planned to destroy their relationship without thinking what will happen next. I never realized how strong and great Jayson’s love for Natalie is. But I was very glad to know that, somehow, behind those rude plans of mine was a very nice act of vengeance.
I was enlightened. I supposed God made me a good retribution as lovely as a gift. God showed me that behind those bars of pain was gentleness – that heals every wound and wipes away every sorrow. I looked for Chris in the beach. I saw him sitting on the sand as if thinking about something profoundly. I sat by his side. “Chris,” I carefully said, “where will we go later?” “Faye, are you serious? Are you going out with me?“ his face lit up.
I smiled and said, “Of course, I will not let you down, you know.” Jayson was not really meant for me. I prayed for his happiness with Natalie. I learned how to open my heart and mind to someone and something which are always there.  Before, I hadn’t had any courage to look at the positive side of life. I always thought that when I do, I will be hurt again… But now, I know that there will always be a time and a place that makes someone realize that problems are not meant to end up things yet, but the beginning of a new chapter of life.
