Chapter 1
BOOGIE HIP DANCE STUDIO……..
Is where I basically live. I love to dance. I’ve been dancing for 10 years. Not because I want to be famous, but just because I like to dance. Me and my friends have always danced. Keda, Kimmy, and I have been soul hip hop dancers since we were young, but we all have certain dances we each specialized in. Kimmy was the fiery Salsa dancer that can bring any guy to their knees with just a bump of her hip, and Keda, was the most hardcore B-Girl that you will ever see. She would spin on her head, and land in a split, just always turning heads. I put my heart and soul into Hip hop. Ten Years of pure hip hop dancing, and it showed.
“Oh my Goodness!” Kimmy ran into the hip hop dance room, “guess who’s coming to town?”
“Who?” Keda and I exclaimed.
“Corbin Bleu!! He’s picking dancers for his new tour, can you believe it? I’m gonna meet Corbin Bleu!” Kimmy and Keda was so excited.
“Who’s Corbin Bleu?” I said, with a half smirk trying to fit in with the rest of the screaming girls.
“Shonna,” Keda looked shocked, “you don’t know who Corbin Bleu is?”
“Yeah….. No.” I said. All of the girls just looked at me. I felt kind of left out, but that was me, I was always left out. “I heard his name before; he is a Singer, right?”
“You disgrace me, Shonna!” Kimmy shook her head and walked away.
“What did I say?” I asked.
“How long have you known Kimmy?” Keda asked me squinting her eyes at me. “You didn’t even know that was her favorite Actor/Singer/dancer?”
“Sorry. I guess, I didn’t know how much he meant to her.” I felt really bad.
“Well, now you know.” Keda walked away. I grabbed my dance bag and looked at the time. Oh man, it was 3:00 pm; I had to get to work!
On my way to my car something was on my shoe, a flyer. ‘CORBIN IS COMING, MAYBE FOR YOU!’ and I remember thinking, ‘Yeah, Right.’
That Saturday, like every Saturday, I went up to the dance studio to practice at 8:00 am. But, something was different. A lot of people were there. A lot of girls were there. I went up to the main desk of the studio and asked, “Why are all these girls here?”
“Oh it’s that audition thing for Corbin Bleu.” Eliza was one of our best dancers at the Studio, but she broke her leg landing a hard move. She stuck it, but broke three bones in her leg.
“That was this Saturday? Well, when is it over with?” I asked.
“I dunno. Hey, why don’t you try out? Kimmy and Keda are both trying out. You have a chance just like everyone else.” Eliza tried to get me to stay, but I didn’t want to.
“No. Other girls want this way more than me. I just love to dance.” I explained.
“Well,” Eliza said, “there’s an open back room if you want to practice there.”
“Thanks.” I went to the back room. I took off my jacket and sweat and turned on the CD player. I had to warm up, of course.
While I was dancing, I spun around to the ground, and I stopped. I looked up, and there was a guy. He had a beautiful caramel complexion and in the best shape I’ve ever seen. He had curly brown hair in a ponytail. He was Gorgeous! Those pretty brown eyes looked at me and said, “I hope you’re trying out for my tour.”
Chapter 2
“UMMMM……
Oh, no, I didn’t know this room was going to be used for the auditions.” I said. I was so scared. I got up and my hands were shaking.
“It isn’t. My name is Corbin Bleu, by the way.” His voice was even gorgeous. He stuck his hand out to shake mine.
“Oh…. Oh you’re Corbin Bleu. You’re the reason why all these dancers are here. I’m sorry, I’m Shonna.” No wonder why Kimmy and Keda was so crazy about him, he was so handsome. I knew I was pretty smelly, so I backed up. I’ll tell you something, dancing will make you sweat!!
“Working hard?” He asked.
“I just got started. But if you need me to leave --“
“No, you can stay.” He interrupted me, “actually, I saw a move that you did, I wanted to know if you could show it to me again, if that’s okay with you?” I didn’t mind. I showed my dance moves to him, and a smile lit up on his face.
“Girl, you’re good. Are you sure you don’t want to try out for the tour?”
“No,” I said, “I only do this for fun.”
“Well, that’s a shame. Hey, why don’t you just watch, It’ll probably change your mind?” He said. I think he really wanted me to audition.
“I don’t know….” I said.
“Come on, you’re not doing anything right now. Please for me?” He batted his big brown eyes at me. At that point, I don’t really think I had a choice.
“Okay, only because I don’t have anything else to do.” I said.
“Maybe it will change your mind?” He asked again.
“I doubt it.” I said in a high pitched voice. He laughed when I said that. He grabbed my hand and we made our way to the main dance room.
Chapter 3
“OH NO SHE DIDN’T!”
I could hear her voice all the way across the dance floor. Bella, the best booty popper in the western hemisphere. I swear, she generates her butt like a washer machine. She’s very high class, but when it comes to dancing you wouldn’t think that. I had to give her props though; she always dances like she has something to prove.
“I know she didn’t just come up in here holding my man’s hand?” Bella put on an attitude like she’s ghetto, please, her parents owns half of Los Angeles.
“Bella, Please,” Keda said. She always had my back, “he ain’t ya man, stop saying that!” I walked over to the girls to tell them good luck.
“Oh, I knew it; you love Corbin Bleu, too!” Kimmy said.
“Actually, I just met him. He’s okay, I guess.” I was so lying; I thought he was the finest guy I have ever seen!!
“Good luck you guys.” I told them.
“So, you’re not trying out?” Keda asked.
“She know she better not. She knows I’ll embarrass her with my one- two booty bounce.” Bella sound so confident.
“Ladies and gentleman, thanks for coming to my Tour auditions.” Corbin announced to the room. All the girls were just starring at him, not because he was talking, but because they all loved him. “All of you will have three days to show me what you got. So, good luck!” The music played and everyone started to dance.
Of course Bella made her way to the middle, to show Corbin her spectacular rump shaker, giving him googley eyes as she danced. I remember thinking, ‘wow! She really wants this.’ But she wasn’t the only one; Kimmy grabbed Corbin and pulled him close to her. I’ve never seen a girl dance so aggressively, and you know what I think he liked it a lot.
Keda didn’t have to get Corbin’s attention he automatically came when she started break dancing right on the dance floor. You want to talk about fierce, this girl was killing it! There’s no doubt in my mind, Bella, Keda, and Kimmy was going to be on the tour. Those girls stood out.
During the break, I went over to the girls to tell them what was up.
“You guys are killing it!” I was so happy for them.
“Duh,” Bella rolled her eyes, “I was the best! He wanted me I could tell!”
“Was that before or after he was amazed by me break dancing?” Keda replied.
“I swear something electric happened between me and Corbin. It’s destiny.” I think Kimmy was just happy to dance with Corbin.
“Three days of this though? What about work?” I said concerned.
“WORK?” All three of them looked at me.
“Never mind. Look, I’ll see you guys later.” I grabbed my bag and headed for the door.
“See ya Eliza,” I shouted.
“See you tomorrow.” Eliza shouted back. I walked out the door and I felt a hand on my wrist.
“Why are you leaving so soon?” Corbin turned me around.
“Because some of us have jobs to do. Good luck with that, finding your dancers, it looks like you were having fun out there.” I said to him.
“I wish I was dancing with you out there.” He whispered in my ear. I just laughed.
“You’re kidding right? All those girl out there and you’re still trying to get me to dance. You have a lot of nerve.” I released his hand from my wrist and I left. I’ll tell you, he’s a little aggressive.
Chapter 4
MEAN WHILE AT HOME…..
Things weren’t as happy for me. You see, the other reason why I could never try out for the audition was because of my family. Our mom left us, me and my three younger siblings about four years ago. My father is sick, so I am forced to work and pay for bills. But, I don’t have time to feel sorry for myself, so don’t feel sorry for me. To be honest with you, no one knows this about me. I don’t like to bring this to the dance studio. The dance studio is where I like to relax. You’re probably saying to yourself, how is dancing relaxing? Well, everyone has there own thing, you know. Dancing is what keeps me happy.
Anyway, my father has been sick now for one year now. It’s hard trying to put food on the table and going to school, and trying to retain a normal teenage girl life, and dream about living a fantasy life. So, I had to cut a couple of that stuff out. It was hard in the beginning, but, now, I just don’t really think about it.
“Dad, I’m home!!” I yelled. My youngest sister came running down the stairs.
“Shhhh! Dad is sleep!” Monica is so adorable. She tries to help out as much as she can. For only 9 years old, she does a lot. But that’s more than what I can say about the one and only boy, Gary.
“Are you going to cook something, Shonna? I’m hungry.” He is so lazy. You would think a 13 year old boy would have more energy.
“Just a minute Gary. How has dad been?” I asked Tammy, she’s always good help. She is 15 years old. Three years younger than me, and she is very smart. She’s been accepted to very nice schools, but because of money issues, she’s stuck at public schools. I know she can exceed, if I had the money, I would send her. “He’s okay. He’s been asleep all day.” “Okay, let’s try not to wake him up. I’ll make you guys something to eat.” I whispered to everyone. The youngest children went up to their room. Tammy pulled me to the side.
“Hey, guess what?”
“What?” I said.
“Remember I told you that I wanted to apply for the Harvard High School program?” She said with a smile on her face.
“Yeah.” I said.
“Well,” she said, “I got in!”
“Oh, that’s great, Tams, how much does it cost?” I had a concerned look on my face.
“Too much. I’m sick of living like this Shonna; I’m too smart to be in the school I’m in right now.” Tammy was so sad.
“I know. But that’s all we can afford right now. I promise as soon as I get a million dollars….” I said, we both giggled a little.
“I’m serious Shonna.” Tammy said.
“I know,” I said, “Things eventually would get better. You know it will. Just have a little faith okay?”
“I’m sick of faith.” Tammy murmured under her breath. And truthfully, so was I. It seems like we will always have problems.
Chapter 5
ON MY DAY OFF OF WORK…..
I went to the dance studio again. Hopefully, this would be the last day of auditions, man, was I wrong. “Eliza, I thought this was the last day of auditions.” I asked her at the front desk.
“Ha-ha. No. There were too many dancers; they’re stretching it for a week straight. Can you believe that?” She had a surprised look on her face.
“A week? It takes a week to decide who can dance. I can pick them out in five minutes.”
I said. Eliza widens her eyes and looked behind me. I turned around.
“So, why don’t you try?” It seems Corbin finds me all the time.
“Because that’s not my job.” I said.
“It could be.” He had a smile on his face.
“What?” I asked.
“One hundred dollars a day, to pick out my dancers.” Was he serious? He was going to pay me to tell him who to have on his tour? It sounds a little too easy. But if he was willing to pay one hundred dollars to let him know who sucks, I had no problem with it.
“Are you serious?” I asked him.
“I’ve never been more serious about anything in my life.” He said with a smile on his face.
“Fine.” I was taken to his manager and given a clip board. I saw Kimmy and Keda stretching. And Bella being Bella.
“Hey girl!!!” Keda is so loud.
“Guess what I’m doing today?” I said with a smile on my face.
“Why you have a clipboard in your hand?” Bella asked.
“Because, I’m judging the dancers!” I was so happy.
“Oh, wow, that is awesome!” Kimmy said.
“Well, I better enjoy it while it last.” I said. Corbin called me over to where he was.
“Now, all you need to do is watch their movements. I’m looking for people who know how to stand out. You know, I think I like your friends. They’re so friendly.”
“Friendly,” I said, “right!”
So as the dancers started to dance, I was walking around. They were giving dance moves and they had to master them. All of these dancers were great. I seen Ballet dancers and belly dancers, all working for one thing, to make it to the top. It was amazing. I wish I could really have a job doing this. I was walking around for a few minutes, and then I felt someone turn me around. That Corbin started to dance with me, I just started laughing.
“I can’t do this,” I whispered to him.
“Come on!” he yelled. The music was loud. He made me feel relaxed, like I’ve known him for a long time. I just looked at him, and started dancing. All of the twists and turns I was doing all came natural. I finally felt like this is where I belong, but it couldn’t have been. Things like this don’t happen to me. Who makes a career dancing their lives away?
Chapter 6
LATER THAT NIGHT…….
As I was grabbing my dance bag to leave, I thought I was going to be the last to leave. But Corbin was there with me.
“Wow!” He said, “You amaze me every time you dance.”
“Thanks,” I said.
“You have talent, don’t thank me for that.” He replied.
“No, for everything. I appreciate you letting me help you today.” I had a smile on my face.
“Can I be honest with you Shonna?” he asked.
“Yeah,” I answered, “please be honest.”
“I don’t see this tour going on without you.” He stared at me, looking at my lips wondering what I was going to say next.
“Oh. Look, you’re a nice guy, but now isn’t really a good time. It was fun, but I have other commitments. I just….. I want to, but I can’t.” a little tear started to fall. Looking down, I tried to stop it before it ran down my face. He pulled my face back up and wiped the tear I couldn’t catch from falling from my face.
“You are so beautiful.” He said. He leaned in close to me, but I pulled back.
“I’m sorry, I have to go.” I got up from the dark dance room, and walked out the door.
The next day, I had to go to work. My boss was there and he looked angry.
“Why weren’t you on call yesterday?” he had a very angry voice.
“I was off yesterday, Mike. I had other things to do.” I said.
“You need to be on call everyday, Shonna. This is a very busy place, and I need to able to trust my employees will come in when I call.” He was furious. I just sighed and rolled my eyes. I hated this job. Retail is not fun to work in. I’ve been working here for a year, and I hate it so much, but it keeps the bills paid. I heard my phone rang. I went to shut it off, so I won’t be forced to answer it. I looked at it. It was Corbin. I wanted to answer. So I did.
“Hey, it’s Corbin.” He said.
“I’m at work, I’ll call you later.” I whispered to him. I hung up the phone and Mike was standing behind me.
“Private calls during work?” he said.
“It was important; I told them I’ll call back.” I said.
“You know if your dad wasn’t sick, I’ll fire you right now. But I’m too good of a person.” He was a jerk!
“Excuse me?” I asked, “With all respect Sir, don’t bring my dad into this situation. If you have a problem with my tasks tell me, and I’ll fix it. Don’t think you have to keep me here because of my home life.” I was furious at that point. How dare he even mention my father? I just walked away to my cash register. Justine, the second cashier was right next to me.
“You don’t have to put up with that, Shonna.” Justine tried to calm me down. She saw I was mad.
“Who does he think he is?” I said.
“Look Shonna. I’m not trying to tell you what to do, but your young, you don’t have to always be responsible. You need to do what makes you happy.” Justine never stirred me wrong. I knew she was right, but she didn’t understand my situation.
“I wish I could quit, but, it’s not that easy.” I tried to explain.
“Listen to yourself, Shonna. You sound like an old woman.” She made me laugh.
Through out the day, I was thinking about Corbin and myself, what if we did go on tour together? I thought he was special. He was so, so comfortable to be around. And I remembered a line from the Killers, ‘HE DOESN’T LOOK A THING LIKE JESUS, BUT HE TALKS LIKE A GENTLE, LIKE YOU IMAGINED….WHEN YOU WERE YOUNG.’ When I was young. That prince charming to sweep me off my feet. I couldn’t help to think, was he it? Can’t be, thing like that don’t happen to me. There I go, off in Fantasy land again.
Chapter 7
I WAS AT HOME…….
That night, when I heard a knock on the front door. Monica hurried to the door to answer it. “Monica, don’t just answer doors!” I told her. I looked up and Corbin was standing there.
“You’re Corbin Bleu!!” Monica was so excited to se him at the door. I felt ashamed that I didn’t even know who this guy was, but my little sister knew who he was.
“What are you doing here?” I asked.
“Can I come in?” he asked.
“Actually—“Before I could finish, Monica interrupted me.
“Yeah, yeah!!” She pulled him in with her little hands. It was so cute. “Tammy!! Look who’s here!” Monica yelled up stairs, and Tammy came rushing down stairs.
“Monica, dad is asleep….” Tammy’s mouth was a gape, “Shonna, why is Corbin Bleu in our house. You know what, I don’t even care. Can I get you something, Corbin?”
“No, I’m fine.” He said.
“Yes, you are.” When Tammy said that I couldn’t help but to laugh.
“Okay, you guys let us have so privacy, okay?” I said. The girls went back up stairs.
“Do you mind answering my question?” I asked.
“What?” he said.
“Why are you here?” I asked again.
“Oh, I can’t say hi?” he put a grin on his face. I just starred at him.
“Okay,” he started.” I just wanted to make sure everything was clear with us.”
“Yeah,” “I said. “Why would you think it wasn’t?”
“Because you kind of pulled off when I was going to kiss you.” He said.
“You did what?” I heard a squeaky little voice at the top of the stairs.
“Monica, upstairs, now!!” I yelled back. It was kind of funny.” Sorry about that.”
“I have little sisters too. How are you doing?” he said. I wasn’t sure if he really wanted to know, but it just blurted out.
“I hate my job, my father is sick, and right now, I have to cook dinner.” I told him.
“Well, let me help.” He said.
“Yeah, right!” I laughed, “Don’t you have something important to do?”
“I’m doing it.” He looked at me. I smiled, I never really felt this way about anyone. I can’t like a super star, that’s crazy.
“Grab an apron.” We cooked dinner and he stayed over for a little while longer.
Before he left I walked him to his car.
“Thanks, it’s not everyday my sister’s idols come to the house.” I said.
“Thank you. I can’t believe you let me cook.” He laughed.
“You didn’t do a bad job.” For a second we laughed, and then there was a silence. He grabbed my hand and kissed it. Whoa! I never had a hand kiss make me feel so special.
“You better go,” I said, “you have a big day tomorrow.”
“Will I see you tomorrow?” He asked.
“I have to work. But I’ll try to make it.” I walked back into the house. And closed the door. I took a deep breath and when to bed.
Chapter 8
THE FINAL DAY OF TRYOUTS…….
Also meant the final day I’d probably see Corbin. This week has changed everything I knew about reality. I could let Corbin go. Or I could go on tour with him. I felt like I was being pulled in two directions: my life in Los Angeles, with my family and job, or on tour with Corbin, doing what I love to do. I got up that morning to go to work.
On my way in the store where I worked Justine stopped me “Shonna, we got robbed last night.” She was so scared.
“What? Calm down. What happened?”
“I don’t know, but Mike is in there and he is furious. Did you close last night?” she asked.
“Yeah, like every night. I closed out the register, and locked the doors.” I replied.
Mike came to the front of the store where I was.
“You closed last night. This is your fault.” He yelled.
“What are you talking about?” I said.
“You didn’t close up correctly, and look now we’ve been robbed.”
“Don’t blame it on me, Mike you were here last night too. As a matter of fact you left after me.” I lashed back.
“Don’t put this on me!” He tried to come back.
I was so sick of him blaming me for everything, I yelled back this time; I couldn’t take it anymore, “Listen to me, because I am so sick of you putting everything on me. I’m not a manager! You are! It’s your fault not mine, not Justine’s, not anyone here! So take the blame like you’re supposing to, because I’m sick of you and these unnecessary jobs you make me do. I’m only 18 years old! I should do something I’ve should have done along time ago. MIKE, I QUIT!!!!” I walked out of that store, and Justine followed me.
“You go girl.” She said, and we went in our cars and we went home.
Chapter 9
AT HOME……..
I went up stairs to tell my dad I don’t have a job anymore.
“Hey dad.” I sadly said.
“Hey, Your off already.” Dad said.
“You can say that. Actually, I quit.” I replied.
“Quit?” He asked.
“Yeah, but I wasn’t getting treated right. It didn’t feel right.” I said
“Jobs aren’t supposed to feel right; they’re supposed to put food on the table.” He said.
“I know, but, I wasn’t happy, I’m young dad, I need to find what I want to do. I’m not suppose to be the mom and dad to my siblings, I’m suppose to be in college making myself better, or something, so I won’t have to be in this state of mind, dad. I don’t want to work at dead end jobs anymore. I have a talent. For ten years I’ve had this talent. I’m a dancer, Dad. That’s it and I know I could make it big. I have faith now, and so does my friend.”
I started to cry.
“I understand. You do what makes you feel good. I don’t want to hold you back. You do what you got to. I love you sweetie.” I’m glad he understood.
“I love you, too.” I smiled and walked out of the room. As I walked out of the room, Tammy, Gary and Monica where looking at me.
“I got your back Shonna, don’t worry about them, I got these kids under control. I’m proud of you, do your thing.” Tammy said.
“Get your man!” Monica followed.
“We love you, Shonna.” Gary said.
“Thanks you guys,” I told them. “As soon as I make enough money I swear we’re getting out of this place!” I said. I gave them all a hug and left to the dance studio.
Chapter 10
AT ABOUT 3:00PM……
The dance auditions was still going on. I was nervous walking in the main dance room. I looked around. I put my bag down and went up to the desk. Eliza was still there and she greeted me.
“Hey Shonna, oh, they’re using all of the dance rooms today. You know, last day of auditions.” She said.
“I want to audition.” I said, and Eliza smiled.
“Sign these papers, you’re going to have to work extra hard today. I know you can do it.” She said.
“Thanks Eliza.” I started walking to the dance floor.
“Hey, Good luck.” Eliza whispered.
As I was walking to the dance floor, I felt a presence of people looking at me as I entered. I saw Corbin. I tapped him on the shoulder.
“You’re still looking for an extra dancer?” I said. He smiled.
“Are you serious?” He asked.
“I’ve never been more serious about anything in my life.” I replied.
“Alright.” He said.
So, I guess you could say I made the tour. Kimmy Bella, and Keda all made the tour and we had so much fun. Mike, you remember him, the mean boss? Well it turns out that the robbery was staged by him. Yeah, he stole $750.00 from the company that night. He got caught and went to jail.
As far as my family, I made enough money to send Tammy to the Harvard High School program. Dad got better, and dad, Monica, and Gary all live in Malibu.
Eliza’s leg got better. She’s back dancing, and she’s going to be in the tour with us next year.
As for me and Corbin, it didn’t work out between us. Yeah right! We’re still together! And you know what I’ve never been so happy. Thank you guys for taking the time to listen to my story. Keep the faith and maybe your dreams will come true.
THE END
