It was a cold and windy night. Just then a wolf howled and Benny got really scared and got in bed with Henry, who didn’t mind. Then they heard the phone ring. A mystery man called Grandpa and he said his monkey had been stolen by a tall, skinny person. Grandpa asked the mystery man where the thief took his monkey, and the mystery man said they had disappeared into the woods. Then Grandpa said he would go to the woods tomorrow. The mystery man said that they would have to find someone with the letter S on the cap and that will be me.
Then it was morning and Henry got up first, Jessie second, Violet third, and Benny fourth. Grandpa and Watch were already up. Grandpa said that they were going on a mystery in the woods. Benny got a little nervous, but Violet calmed him down. Jessie asked what kind of mystery they were going on.
Grandpa said that they were going on a tricky little mystery. He said in a proud voice, “We’re going to look for a stolen monkey.” Then Grandpa made pancakes and Benny ate the most.
When it was 11:00 AM, they started to pack. Henry and Grandpa grabbed the cooler and started to put food it. While Jessie and Violet got some clothes, Benny and Watch were still eating. When it was 11:30 they got on the bus. Henry was carrying the cooler, Jessie the clothes, Grandpa carried Benny, and Violet carried Watch.
Then they picked out the seat and talked about who could have stolen the monkey. Just then Jessie saw a man with a cap on that had the letter S on it. They walked over to the mystery man and asked him who could have stolen his monkey.
He started to list names. “Jonathan Owens might be an option because I took his girl friend. Alex Allen is a possible person because I took her food. Janie Allen because I took the pet she had wanted. Dexter Allen because I took his house that he had wanted. And Karen Fyffe because I took the job that she had wanted.” When he got done it was time for them to get off the bus.
When they got to the campsite Grandpa told Henry to get some firewood. So Henry found five pieces. When he was walking back to his campsite he saw a shadow swinging in the trees and started to run. He asked everybody if they had been in the woods, and everybody said no.
When they got the fire started, they went out to search for the monkey. Benny and Watch went together, Henry, Grandpa, Violet and Jessie searched together. Henry saw a dark shadow, but he lost contact with it and the same with Grandpa. Violet and Jessie caught it, but it slipped out of their hands. Benny and Watch were having bad luck. Then Watch saw a dark shadow and starting running after it. Benny saw it and followed Watch. Violet, Jessie, Henry and Grandpa saw the thief and trapped him. Benny finally caught the monkey and looked for the others. The cops came and it turned out to be Karen Fyffe who stole the monkey. Then the mystery man finally introduced himself “I’m Brian Johnson.” After that he asked Benny if he wanted a monkey. Benny took the monkey and named it Donna because it was him who caught the little 90 mile per hour demon so . . . . . . . . . He got to name it.

This was an interesting read. I'm not inclined to give constructive criticism since it was written in fourth grade, which I still consider quite notable for the age. The sentence structure was nice, no repetition of ideas (which normally you see with younger writers). Very nice. The ending was amusing. |
