Jamie woke up to the sound of a siren and the jump of a car going over a bump in the road. It took him a while before his vision could straighten out, but when it did, the first thing he noticed was the man in the whit suit peering down at him.

“It’s ‘bout time you woke up. I thought you were dead. Think goodness that you’re not. That would have been bad.”

Jamie went to open his mouth to speak, thought better of it, and kept his mouth shut. If you are a boy that gets beat up everyday at school and home, then you learn to watch when you speak.

“What’s wrong? Cat got your tongue.”

Not saying a word, Jamie just stared up at him speechless.

“Well, okay. I’ll leave you to your peace. It’s about time ‘til we arrive at the hospital,” saying this, the white suite man walked back up to the front of the ambulance and sat down.

Slowly closing his eyes, second by second, Jamie fell back to sleep.

There was coughing, so much coughing. Jamie awoke to the sound of a deep cough that sounded like it came out of the throat. He stared around the warm, comfortable room that he immediately noticed to be a hospital room. Then it all came back to him.

The Red Heads, the punch, the man in the white suit, the hard concrete. Jamie slowly moved his hand to the back of his head until he felt the small bump of where he hit his head on the concrete. He started thinking, if only he had given the Red Heads his money. Then he wouldn’t be here. Then he wouldn’t have the knot on his head. He also wouldn’t be hearing the poor creature’s coughs that lay on the other side of the curtain in the middle of the room.

He heard the sound of what sounded like a feeble old mouse squeaking. It was saying, or attempting to say something. Jamie couldn’t hear anything, he was too busy trying to get the ring out of his ears from the head ache he had.

He saw a small shaking hand come around the edge of the curtain. When the curtain was pulled back, the first thing Jamie noticed was the bright yellow gown. There was only one person he knew who had a bright yellow gown like that, and sure enough, his Grandma was laying on the bed before him.

Jamie looked his Grandmother from her old, but beautiful face, down to her pink painted toenails. She did the same to him, and then tried to start a conversation.

“Why the heck are you in here?”

Jamie replied, “I got punched by this bully and blacked out.”

“Oh, I guess that would explain why you are wet. Is it raining out still?”

“It was when I got knocked out.”

“Is Melinda back yet?” Jamie’s Grandma hardly ever talked about his family. She knew how hard it was for him at his house. She was the one that caught his Dad beating him. She threatened to call social services. But she didn’t. Jamie’s Dad still abuses him, but he is more careful of where he does it at.

“I don’t know. She said she was either supposed to come in today or tomorrow.”

Jamie’s beloved Grandmother smiled at him and said the words Jamie was waiting to hear, “I love you. I really hope you know that. I know I’m going to die Jamie. I need you to be strong when I do. Just remember one thing; I will always be with you.”

“Don’t leave me Grandma. I don’t want you to go. Take me with you. Please!”

“Don’t worry, son. I’m not going to go now.”

            “Okay.”

As Jamie went to blow his nose with a tissue on the table beside his bed, he heard a click of the door behind him. He turned around and saw his Mom walk through the door. Jamie felt a little better at the sight of his Mom instead of his Dad.

Melinda, Jamie’s mom, walked through farther into the room and sat in one of the blue chairs. “I brought you a book and some bananas. I hope that will hold you. I need the rest of my money for my jewelry I’m going to buy.”

“What book did you bring me?” Jamie asked curiously.

She replied, “I don’t know. It’s by that author you like so much.” Melinda picked up the book out of the little Wal-Mart bag and read, “Anastasia Krumpnik.”

            “Oh, well, thank you.”

This is the first time Jamie’s Grandma had spoke, “Jamie, maybe you could read it to me later on today.”

Jamie’s Mom looked over at the frail old woman, noticing her for the first time, “Oh, well, isn’t that good. You two are in the same room together. Anyways, I have to run. The jewelry store closes at 6:00P.M. Bye, Jamie.”

            “Bye, Mom.”

After my Mom stepped through the door, Jamie’s Grandma went into a fit of coughing as if she had been trying to hold it the whole time. She gradually moved her hand to the edge of the curtain between them and moved it back to its place.

Jamie took this as a rest time for himself. So he closed his eyes and went back to sleep.
