The Tale of the Witch's Diary Part 3

Jess read and re-read the diary that day. No way she did that, Jess thought, she would never would she? She had killed many, hurt even more, and schemed along with Jess’s parents to hurt “the prophecy”. Jess ran all the way to Kevin’s house.     “What all do you know?” she asked. When she saw how his face looked, she realized she sounded a little bit crazy. “May I come in?”she asked, more amiable. He nodded, “Of course.” They sat down in his living room: him in a chair which he closer to the couch, her on the couch. “Now, what is it you want to tell me?” he asked, trying to hide that he was scared to see her so distraught. “Okay this may sound crazy but, Persephone comes out of this diary,” she started calmer now, holding the diary up so he could see. He looked puzzled, but not unbelieving. “She told me that she wanted me to read it. And I did. It was horrible. She was a murderer and she wants to hurt someone important; I don’t know who but like kill them. They call them “the prophecy”. It really scares me. And it says my parents are in on it too. That they’re alive.” Kevin leaned forward his face a mask, looking like a therapist about to say “And how does that make you feel?”. He said to her quietly, “It’s okay. Who is this person that they threaten?” She shook my head and fought the urge to cry, “I don’t know…. You don’t think my parents really are alive? If they really are part of this they’re better off dead.” He put his arms around her while she cried, “Don’t say that. You don’t mean it. Everything’s going to be okay. There, there.” She calmed down a few minutes later. “Do you believe me?” she said wiping her eyes. “I wish I didn’t but yes,” he said honestly. She nodded, slowly, “Okay good because that’s only part of it. Uh, they’re kinda like, uh, fairies. And uh because they’re like fairies, I’m kinda a witch. Confusing, I know.” His jaw dropped. “What are we going to do?” he asked regaining his composure. “I don’t know. I’m not sure if Purse even knows she’s evil. But maybe it really all is just an act.” They were silent for awhile. “I think I should take you home now,” he said quietly. “You’re going to leave me alone with her? What if she really is a psycho?” she asked in a panicky voice, the magic attack from yesterday fresh in her mind. What if that was her? What if she did it again? Even if Kevin stayed with her, he couldn’t stop her, could he? Kevin’s voice pulled her from her panicked thoughts, “If it’s okay with you, I’ll stay the night at your house, okay?” She nodded. He drove them to her house.      “Okay, don’t mention any of that to her,” he said when they were almost there. “Really? What did you expect me to say? ‘Hey my new psychopath guardian, guess what? I read your diary and I sure don’t wanna be that prophecy person you’ve been planning to kill for the last 258 years,” she said sarcastically. “Wait. What? 258 years? Where’d that come from?” he said, unsure if that part was sarcasm. “Hmm? Oh yeah, the diary was dated in 1750. Didn’t I already tell you?” He took a side long glance at her, “Anything else you want to tell me before I… uh yeah?” He squeezed the steering wheel to stop his hands from shaking. She eased one of his hands off the steering wheel. She put the tip of her finger against his palm. She channeled the magic first through herself then into him. He drove on the wrong side of the road then came back instantly all without separating their hands. “How’d you do that?” he asked breathless. “I’m a witch, remember? Don’t tell Purse I showed you that or she’ll… I don’t know what she’ll do but she told me not to share my powers with anyone. But that’s about all I can do… Well I can also levitate things,” she said glad to have that. “You know how it feels like it’s inside your whole body? Well, yesterday, I felt it when I was mad and it turned that inside me thing against me. IT was the most… excruciating thing I ever experienced.” She shuddered at the memory. He put his arm around her shoulders, knowing she was near tears. She shrugged his comforting arm off; she still wasn’t comfortable with him touching her. He understood that but wasn’t sure if it was because he had taken her parents place at work, because he had been told her that they were supposed to get married, or because of the way she’d reacted to him telling her that they were supposed to get married or all  three or none of them. His hands were shaking again. They pulled up to the mansion. With police cars in the driveway. Jess’s and Kevin’s first thought was that she had already killed “the prophecy”. Man were they wrong!
