Jennifer’s Side:The table full of cheerleaders and jocks roared into laughter. It was lunchtime at Piedmont High and the student body filled the cafeteria. ‘Oh that was cold Eric. But uh… yeah Trisha is pretty easy’’, Josh joked. A couple of people laughed again. ‘Uh… I wouldn’t be talking if I was you Josh. I heard all about you and your little ‘trip to the clinic’’’, Ashley commented sarcastically. ‘Ohhh Josh’’, the people at the table said as Josh began to blush.‘’Hey shut- up Ashley, no one was talking to you’’, Josh said. ‘’Hello my peoples, the star is here’’, a voice said dramatically, walking towards the table with a model’s strut. ‘I know you’ve all missed me. It’s perfectly understandable’’. ‘Hey Jennifer’’, some people at the table said.‘’About time you got here Jenny’’, Kevin said as he patted the chair next to him. Jennifer tossed her hair behind her shoulder and then went to sit in the chair beside him. ‘So’’, Jennifer said, pouring ranch on her salad. ‘What’s the latest subject?’’. ‘Oh we were just talking about Josh and his little clinic trip’’, Katelyn answered. Jennifer looked up from her food. ‘That’s disgusting. I don’t want to hear about that. Change of subject’’. ‘’What do you have in mind to talk about Jenny Jen- Jen?’’, Mike asked. ‘’Oh’’, Jennifer said, she dropped her fork and finished chewing her food before she answered. ‘You guys wont believe what happened’’. ‘’What?’’, the girls at the table asked.Jennifer took a dramatic intake of breath and then released it. ‘Daddy is letting me have a sweet 16 and… Panic! At the Disco, American Rejects, and OneRepublic will be there… performing at the party!!!’’. The girls at the table squealed while the guys high- fived each other.‘’That’s what’s up’’, Eric said. ‘’So when’s the party happening?’’. ‘’Two weeks’’, Jennifer said happily. ‘’I have so much to do in so little time and plus… I have no budget limit so yeah my party is totally going to rock’’, Jennifer said. ‘’Aww Jennifer I wish I was you’’, Katelyn whined playfully.‘’I know you are so lucky’’, Ashley agreed. ‘Your party is definitely going to be the party of the year’’, Jessica agreed, talking for the first time. Jennifer turned to look at her. ‘Wow Jessica, I didn’t know you were here. You usually are the first person I hear’’. ‘I was just listening. I’m not feeling good today but yeah I will totally help you plan the party’’, Jessica offered. ‘’You are the coolest female I’ve ever known’’, Eric said going to Jennifer and squeezing her appreciatively. ‘’I’ll second with that’’, Kevin said reaching over and hugging her also. ‘’I want to join’’, Ashley whined as her, Katelyn and Jessica joined in making it a group hug.‘’Oh alright’’, Josh said getting up. ‘’I love you too’’. He held out his hand to join in on the hug. ‘’Stop it right there clinic man’’, Jennifer said holding out her hand to halt him. ‘Go on back to that chair because until I know why you made that little trip of yours no way are you coming near me’’. The group broke into laughter again as Josh flopped back into his chair. Karen’s side:Karen sat in her chair, watching the table across the room from her. She sighed deeply as she watched everyone jump up from their seats and hug Jennifer. Jennifer Shawl. The prettiest, most popular girl in the whole school with her clear smooth skin, blonde silky hair, big baby- blue eyes, pretty white- teethed smile with dimples in each cheek, and her perfect slender, curvaceous body. She was perfection to the hilt. The girls wanted to be like her, guys worshipped her, and teachers adored her. The perfect girl. The Golden Girl. Karen sighed again as depression settled over her. Why couldn’t she be like that? She was only Plain Jane. She had big geeky glasses since she was far- sighted, her hair was red, curly and very oily, her braces totally didn’t go with her face, and she was as flat-chested as the concrete. ‘Hey Karen’’, someone said from behind her interrupting her thoughts. Karen jumped slightly and turned around to see who was talking to her. ‘’Uh hi’, she said. Jake Riley was standing behind her with his cute half-smile and deep dimples visibly showing. Why is he talking to me and how does he know my name? Karen asked herself. Jake Riley only associated with people as perfect as he was. People like Jennifer. Michael, another popular jock, stood right beside Jake with an amused grin on his face. ‘Principle Cliff told us to tell you the message that Grim left’’, Michael answered, his grin expanding. ‘Grim?’ Karen asked confused.‘’Uh yeah, the Grim Reaper called. He wants his face back’, Michael answered as Jake and him burst into laughter. They high- fived each other. Karen tried hard to hold back her tears by digging her nails into her palm. ‘What’s so funny?’’, Jennifer asked as her and Ashley came strutting over.‘Oh uh… we were just telling Karen that Grim needed his face back. Don’t worry though Karen he said he’d give you Freddie’s face. It might look a bit better on you’’. The two guys laughed again and Ashley snickered.‘’That is not funny’’, Jennifer said. Ashley suddenly stopped giggling and tried to hold her composure. ‘Yeah so totally mean’’, Ashley agreed.‘’Oh come on Jen, lighten up’’, Jake said playfully. ‘We were must messing around with the girl. Isn’t that right?’’. Karen wished more than anything that the floor would form a hole and swallow her. Why couldn’t they all just leave her alone? ‘Oh really? Well I was just kidding when I invited you to my party. Hilarious isn’t it Ashley’, Jennifer said. Ashley gave a fake laugh. ‘’Hysterical’’.‘’Alright fine. Sorry’, Michael apologized to Karen with a slight sneer on his face. ‘Yeah, we really were just messing around with you’’, Jake said. The two quickly scurried away. Ashley turned to leave too. ‘’Come on Jen’’, Ashley said.‘’Go on. I’ll be back in a minute. Just go’’, Jennifer said as she sat next to Karen. Karen held back a groan as Ashley hesitantly walked back to their table. ‘Don’t listen to what they say’’, Jennifer said smiling. ‘They’re just… they like to play a lot and… sometimes they do go overboard’. Karen just stared at the ground, not wanting Jennifer to see the tears in her eyes. ‘Well… I guess I’ll see you around then’’, Jennifer said as she got up and walked away. Yeah right, Karen thought, like you’ll ever talk to me again. She grabbed her lunch tray, threw it away, and then
