Love, loss and love again - 5

Tragedy Created on 9-17-08 Views(59) Story Rating G

It was the day after Thanksgiving and Bri, Chris and both of their mothers found themselves in the car on the way to the hospital. They had no idea what was going on. Only that something had happened to Jonathan and April. With tears in her eyes she looked at Chris who wrapped his arms around her in the hopes it would comfort her a little.
"Chris you dont think their dead do you?"
"I dont think so Bri, God I hope not."
They pulled up to the hospital and even before the car came to a stop Bri and Chris hit the pavement running. They reached the front desk and asked the receptionist where April and Jonathan were being kept. They were both in intensive care.
"Okay, so thats good and bad, right? They are alive but not in great condition?"
With that sentence Bri broke down. Their moms finally caught up to them and Chris told them that Jonathan and April were in intensive care. They made their way there, hoping beyond all hope that they were both going to be okay. They made it around the final corner and Bri immediately saw April. The room was directly in front of them. She ran up to the room, to the end of April's bed. April had a wrap around her head and some wires coming out from under the blanket. But there was no machines hooked up that was helping her breathe. That gave Bri instant relief. She walked up to Aprils side and touched her hand. April opened her eyes which were swollen black and blue. She had cuts all along her face. She gave a weak smile and squeezed Briana's hand.
"You're going to be okay April. I am not going to leave here until you are."
Chris came up on the other side of the bed and took April's other hand. She slighty turned her head and saw Chris. She gave another weak smile and squeezed his hand as well.
"You going to be okay short stuff. Bri and I will be here if you need anything."
She gave another squeeze to both of their hands before falling back asleep. April's mom pulled them both outside of the room to tell them what happened.
"They were walking back from the convenient store when a drunk driver ran them both down. Jonathan took the majority of the blow. He threw April out of the way. April is out of the woods. She hit her head pretty hard on the concrete and she has a couple of broken ribs, scrapes and bruises. But nothing life threatening. She sustained a mild concussion from the hit to her head, but the doctor said she was going to be fine. She may suffer from a few migranes now, but she is going to okay. Jonathan I am afraid did not get off so lucky. Both of his legs were broken. He sustained a minor skull fracture; the doctors believe that will heal on its own okay. They have to watch him closely for brain swelling. Almost every one of his ribs were broken. Several bones in his face were also broken. I was told by his mother that the car threw him over 100 feet. He broke both arms and a few of his fingers. The doctors don't believe that there is any brain damage or spinal chord damage, thank God! But he has a long way to go. He has a maching breathing for him because of all of the broken ribs. The MRI did not show any signs of internal damage to any of his vital organs. Which the doctors say is a miracle in itself."
With her last sentece being said, she pointed them in the direction of Jonathans room. It was blocked by a curtain. Only two people were allowed in his room at a time. They knew that his mother would be in there. Chris told Bri to go in first. He would be waiting right out here. Bri walked in and was immidiately greeted by his mother. She gave her a big hug and told her, "Thank you for coming." Bri looked at Jonathan. He had casts on all four of his limbs. He head was wrapped in bandages that were beginning to show blood from the cuts he sustained on his head. His face was swollen beyond recognition. He had cuts on every part of skin that was not already covered by some type of bandage. He had a tube going down his throat to help him breathe. Bri could count on one hand how many patches of skin still showed on him. He was almost completely covered by a bandage or a cast. Bri began to cry. She walked over to Jonathan and placed a light kiss on his head. His mom had told her that he had not regained conciousness since the accident happened. Bri bent down to where his ear would be and said, "You fight, you hear me? Chris and I will be here until you and April are both walking out this hospital. We are going to be here for Jonathan. You just hang in there!" She kissed him atop his head again and stood back up. When she looked back down at him, she was greated by two very swollen, but very green eyes.
"Lori, Lori, look he's awake!"
"Oh my God!"
"Chris!"
Chris came into the room and walked over to his best friend. He looked down and saw that his eyes were open, but only just because of the swelling.
"Hey there big guy. Bri and I are here and we are not going anywhere until you and April are okay."
Jonathan could not speak or move his hands. Tears started to come out of his eyes. He looked at Chris wanting to aske him a question. Chris knew exactly what he wanted to ask. It would be the same thing he would ask if this had happened to him and Bri.
"April is okay Jonathan. She sustained minor injuries. She got a bump on the head and a few cracked ribs. She has scrapes and bruises just like you do, but you saved her life man. You did a great job."
Jonathan started to cry so much so that it began to hurt him. He thought to himself thank you God for sparring my April. Thank you for these wonderful friends you have given me. I cant believe April is going to be okay. I thought for sure that we were both dead when I saw that truck coming at us. God this hurts to cry, but I am so happy to hear that April is okay. He looked back up at Chris thanking him with another look and a blink.
"You are very welcome man. Very welcome."
The doctors came in to look at Jonathan. Everyone except his mom had to leave the room. The doctors were astonished that Chris was awake.
"What did you say to him Bri?"
"I just told him to fight and that you and I were going to be here until he and April go better...wait, he opened his eyes at the mention of April. I bet he didnt want to wake up fearing that April would not be here when he did."
"I think you're right. I know how he feels. I wouldnt want to wake up if you were not here either."
The stood there holding one another for a very long time. Then they parted ways. Chris going to sit with Jonathan and Briana going to sit with April.

Its been six months since the accident happened. Jonathan was still in the hospital but he was up and walking, talking, moving his arms. His chest was still very sore and tender, but the bones were healing nicely. He had to do physical therapy every day in order to get strong enough to go home. April was up at the hospital as much as she could be. She was able to go home a couple of months earlier. But she fought that because she wanted to be with Jonathan all the time. Briana finally talked her into going home.
"April if you are home and getting stronger, that will give Jonathan more incentive to do his therapy so that he can get stronger too."
"I guess you're right. Okay, lets go home."
She came up to the hospital every other day to do therapy. The hospital made sure that she and Jonathans therapy times were the same. The two would not have had it any other way.
A couple of weeks later, Jonathan was able to go home. Still walking with the help of a cane, the doctors assured him that if he kept up with his therapy that he would be walking without the cane in no time. Jonathan was greated by Chris and Bri when he got home. And of course April. She ran up to him and gave him a great big hug and a kiss. Chris came up and hugged him and said, "Sorry man, but I aint gonna kiss you." Everyone laughed. Bri came up to him next and gave him a big hug and kissed him on the cheek. Its good to see you home Jonathan. "It feels good to be home," he said as he looked around. The ate and talked and then Jonathan asked the question that everyone was dreading.
"What happened to the drunk driver that ran April and I down?"
His mother looked up him with tears in her eyes. She told him that he had gotten away that day. No one saw the truck or got the liscense plate number. He wasnt caught until a week later. The only reason they caught him that time was because he was driving drunk in a school zone after school had been let out. He ran down a 7 year old girl that was killed. The cops chased him for over 3 hours before he finally ran out of gas. He came our holding a gun. He pointed it at police and they all opened fire. He was also killed."
Jonathan didnt know how to react. He didnt know if he wanted to be happy or angry. He was sad that a little girl died because no one was paying attention on the day that he and April got ran down. He was angry that the man was not going to pay for his crime, that he got the easy way out. He was happy that the man would no longer be a threat to anyone on the road.
"Mom, I want to start some sort of organization. I know there is MADD, Mothers agains drunk driving, but there has to be something that we can do. I dont know, maybe help sponser them. Start a local MADD group here."
"I think thats a great idea," his mother exclaimed. Lets see what we can do.

Chris and Bri would be starting their Junior year. Their relationship was better than ever.
"Chris, I love you so much. I cant believe it has been three years. I cant wait for the next three and the next and the next.
"I love you too my Bri. I cant wait for the next fifty years." Chris gave her a hug and kissed her softly on the lips
They were looking forward to their junior year. They would be going to the junior prom this year. April and Jonathan had both healed well enough to come back to school. Thanks to their two best friends, they were not behind in their classes, so they were able to go on to the 11th grade. The MADD ground was moving along very well. Little did Bri know, that the MADD group would come too little too late and this would end up being the worst year of her life...
