I am going to take this time to reflect on 9/11 and all of the thoughts and feelings I felt that day.
I remember exactly where I was when I got the news that one of the world trade center towers had been hit by a commercial air liner. It was my Sophomore year of highschool. I was in my 1st period math class. Our principal came over the loud speaker and asked all of the teachers to turn their t.v's onto the news. What I saw shocked me. There on the t.v. was one of the twin towers with huge gaping holes; fire and smoke pouring out of that massive hole. Every eye was glued to that television. The principal came back on the loud speaker letting everyone know that they had parents calling and that anyone who needed or wanted to go home could do so. I called my mom. I know that she had coworkers that worked in one of the twin towers. She assured me that they were okay. They were on the bottom floors. I looked back at the t.v. just in time to see another airplane hit the second tower. I gasped when I saw it. I could not believe what I was seeing.
We got to our next class and the teacher immidiately turned on the t.v. We did not do work the entire class. I watched as news came on of the Pentagon being hit by another high jacked air liner. Each of us talking among ourselves about who would do this. We all wondered what building would be next. Thats when a friend of mine mentioned the white house. We all watched in horror. Waiting for the next reprot to be that the White House had been hit. There was mass panic in Washington. They were getting the president and vice president to non-disclosed locations. Then the unthinkable happened.
The first tower collapsed. Shortly after, the second fell. All you could see on the t.v. screen was dust, paper and the forms of people coming from the smoke. Just the thought of the number of men and women that would lose their lives was unthinkable. The numbers had already started to come in. It was estimated to be in the thousands. Then we heard a report of a 4th plane that had crashed in Pennsylvania. All of the news stations had guessed that flight 93 had been on its way to the White House. But no one new for sure. Those people would later be known as heros.
Towards the end of the school day, everything was beginning to calm down in the sense that all planes were grounded and the threat of more planes colliding with buildings was gone. But now there was panic for the search and rescue crews. Thousands of people were volunteering from all over the country.
My final period of the day was a computer class. We all filed into the class room and one of the students turned on the t.v. The teacher, who was Iranian by descent, went to the television and turned it off. The whole class asked her to turn it back on. She said that we had work to do. We asked her how she could work at a time like this? She simply answered, "There is work to be done, so do it." We looked at her and someone from the back of the room told her that there was no way he could concentrate on his work knowing that his country was suffering and that there was nothing he could do except watch everything unfold. But he couldnt even do that because he had a bitch for a teacher. He got up and walked out. Our whole class including myself did the same. She began to yell and told us all that if we walked out she would report us and we would all be expelled. We walked out anyways. Not caring what she did to us. We all went to different classes to teachers that we knew would be watching. I went to my art class. Sure enough, she had her t.v. on. It did not surprise me. Her brother was in the army and working in the Pentagon. She had been on the phone all morning trying to find out the fate of her brother. Thank God, he was okay. He was on the other side of the building.
Do you remember where you were when tragedy struck our nation? Do you remeber what you felt and what you thought? If you do, please comment and let me know. I remember. I remember everything about that day. The day that our nation came together. The day so many firefighters and police officers and civilians lost their lives. A day I will never forget.
