Sitting there I looked up in disbelief. Kane helped me up, his strong arms lifted me with ease. I followed him and Dana into a diner across the street. We got there and A lady chewing gum and wearing a green apron stained with ketchup asked in a tired and un interested voice,

“What can I get for ya”? 

Kane ordered a water for Dana and a coke for him and looked at me and asked

“what would you like baby doll”?

I answered a little shy

“Coke Please”.

“And ta eat”?

Again Kane ordered Dana a salad with Ranch dressing, himself a hamburger and onion rings, then looked at me once more

I whispered more confident this time

“Hamburger with no pickles with Onion Rings please”

“mhm”

walking away Kane looked at me again as Dana sat there smiling. She looked young, maybe only 19. She was so pretty, I couldn’t get over her, but behind her smiles she looked lost, just like I was.

“So why are you out here this time of night all alone, a pretty thing like you could get hurt”.

“I have no place to go, I can’t take my house anymore, my mom is addicted to crack adn her boyfriends there always hitting on me, I can’t afford to take care of her, and I cant be around it anymore. I needed a fresh start.”

“Well I understand. I ran away when I was younger too, I understand and believe highly in fresh starts.”

He was sitting next to me and I looked over at him about to cry.

“Aww come on its ok”

He took me into his arms holding me there tight, I felt comforted and safe with him holding me, I never wanted him to let go. Just then he got a phone call on his cell, answering he got up and told me to hold on he would be right back. Sitting there Dana looked at me and smiled.

“I understand what you mean. My dad was a alcoholic always bringing his drunk friends around. I had had if after being raped over and over by them, Kane took me in three years ago when I was 17.”

Stunned by her sudden opening up to me, I was still over taken by my shy habit.

“Sorry”

was all I could mumble.

“Nah, dont be Kane showed me how to be independent, he’s a great guy.”

Kane walked back into the diner and had Dana get up and told her something, leaving she winked at me and blew Kane a kiss as the diner door opened once again  with a chime.

When the salad go there it just lay untouched but my hamburger was practically inhaled. 

“Woah! slow down you might choke.”

Blushing I apologized.

“Its ok kitten, but Im worried about you. I don’t like the fact that you are on your own out here on the streets. I want to give you a place to stay and want you to come stay at my place. Dana is there and some other people too.”

“thank you”

I wasn’t scared, I felt safe around him, I liked him and wanted to get closer to him.

He gave me a hug and held me there for a while until he stood up as I followed. He payed the bill at the register and walked out the door with a clang.

Running to ketch up he slowed when he heard me gasping for breath. He took my hand in his and rubbed it, guiding me to a apartment building across the street by my old alley. 

As we walked in I heard music playing in rooms around me, girls walking up talking to Kane, he seemed to be very popular here. Some guy looked at me and whistled

“Hot bitch you got there Kane!”

Thats when I saw a side of Kane I didn’t expect. Pushing the tall black man against the dirty white walls he yelled at him 

“Don’t talk about her that way! you here me! she’s put up with enough shit!”

“Alright Kane Im sorry, Im sorry”.

Quickly he looked at me and took my hand 

“sorry you had to see me like that sugar I just don’t like it when guys dis- respect the ladies.”

“its ok”

I said as I smiled at him.

He took me to the end of the hall way and unlocked the only door I could see that was shut and locked. It was cleaner than the rest of the apartment building, with leather couches and wood floors. A purple rug lay in the middle of the floor and a big screen tv stood in the corner of the light wooden floor. He sat down on the couch and patted his hand motioning for me to sit next to him. 

“You can sleep here, I know its not much but its something.”

“No! Its perfect!”

laughing he stood up and came back with a black comforter and a cheetah pillow. Here you go. He sat down and turned the tv on, I sit there not knowing what to do. Taking his hand on my shoulder he gently pushed me into his lap as my head lay there on the red sofa pillow on his lap he pulled the black blanket over my body. Kissing me on the cheek.

“There you go princess just sleep, don’t worry your safe now”. 

And I felt safe, and so I did what I was told with happiness, I slept, drifting off to the soft noise of the television in the background.
