Too sick to move I felt my body sinking, into the earth and tears flowing down my face. I didn’t even have time to fight them. I heard my moms hand cup her mouth with a ~GASP~. Standing up she paused and sat back down. I heard her ask the question I was asking.
“Doesn’t that mean ch chemo therapy or radiology or something”?
All I could think to mumble through my drowsiness was the most important thing to most girls.
“W W Will I loose my hair”?
“Now I don’t want you to jump to any conclusions, the symptoms are a very big sign, but we haven’t taken any tests to prove this yet. To diagnose the disease, the blood and marrow cells must be examined. On top of that, low red cell and platelet counts, examination of the stained (dyed) blood cells with a microscope will usually show the presence of leukemic cells. That means I’m going to write you a referral to go get some tests done, then we from the results from that we will be able to tell what’s next.”
“When will we do all this”?
My mother asked in a fearful voice.
The doctor spoke again, she kept rambling but my mom listened to every word, like listening would heal me or something.
“I would like to get her in today, the reason being if she has it the additional vomiting and headaches may be a sign of it in her head. I say ALL because it is one of the more common ones you find in teens and children. Its rapid moving and can come on in a matter of days or weeks. We are going to be aggressive from the start”.
The doctor looked concerned, that made me scared. Doctors never looked concerned. Leaving the doctors office my mom left me in the waiting room as she went to go get the car. Coming back she helped me get into my seat and buckled me up. Befor shutting my door she handed me my throw up bucket, just in case.
Picking up my cell phone I called Ethan. I was so scared, I wanted him to be there with me. I wanted him there now. He answered on the second ring, which made me very happy, but didn’t help me from feeling sick.
“Emma”! “Have you heard anything yet”.
Great he already sounds worried, how can I tell him, how. What I ended up saying was a little harsh and a little bold but I said it.
“They think I have cancer, Im going in for tests, please come up to Spring Rose Hospital, please iM having tests done today”. “Right now”!
“W what” “are they sure”
“No thats why they are doing some tests.”
“Emma I don’t have a car today mines in the shop and my Mom is at work with my Dad.”
“o”
“No don’t worry Ill ride my bike”.
“Wait! I have an idea”.
“Mom, on the way to the hospital please stop and get Ethan please I refuse my tests without him there with me”.
My mom looked at me with shock in her eyes, She knew we were going out she just didn’t know I felt this strong about him. I guess thats why she said yes. No arguments.
Or maybe she felt guilty, I don’t know which. All I know is that we were both scared, very scared. As we drove up into Ethans drive way my mom had my Dad on the phone and was talking to him. My Dad was upset, but he was more into facts, he wouldn’t break down until he was sure. Mom on the other hand was crying, trying to calm down as we picked up Ethan. As Ethan opened the back door I had a request for him.
“Hey honey, can you help me get into the back seat”?
“Ya of course!”
He seemed more gentle with me now helping me into the back seat like I was some expensive breakable glass. As I buckled my seat belt he got in the middle seat and held me in his arms tight. Not letting go the whole way to the hospital. Every so often he would whisper softly into my ear
“I love you, everything is going to be alright”.
Then he would softly kiss my forehead.
