Downhill Independence (CHAPTER 2)
|
The wind whipped Tania’s face as she leant out the van window. But she withdrew as soon as she felt a drop of rain hit her in the eye.
“Damn. I think it’s gonna rain guys.”
The group of teenagers strewn around the van all moaned and looked out the window as large droplets of water started to hit the high way road.
“Fabulous,” said Shelley, sarcasm spiking her voice. “Our bloody first day on the road and it rains.”
Tania brushed back her auburn hair which hung in strands around her face, revealing her green eyes. Her hair was drawn back into a loose pony tail.
“I’m sure it’s just a shower,” she said. “The sun will come out tomorrow, bet your bottom dollar that tomorrow! There’ll be sun!”
Tania leapt onto the two middle seats of the van and broke out into song. She was stopped short by a pillow in the face, confidently thrown by Kim.
“Hey will you guys shut up!” snapped Katrina, changing gears. “And put your bloody seatbelts on! I don’t wanna be pulled over by the coppers and them to find five sixteen year olds in the back messing around!”
“I’m seventeen in four weeks thankyou!” yelled Tate.
“I don’t want any silly business you guys!” she shouted.
Katrina had turned out to be rather fierce and grumpy during the journey to Inverloch. The only words that Tania had heard her say were different sorts of threats.
“Takes after her mother,” whispered Michael in Tania’s ear. Tania burst out laughing.
The trip had proved to be very long and Katrina’s patience short.
“Will you guys SHUT UP! You’re giving me a headache!”
The girls fell silent but Tate and Michael continued to wrestle on the floor. Tate won because he was strong. He played footy at school all the time and was obsessed with sport. Michael on the other hand was a bit chubby and nearly starts crying when you stamp on his foot. So naturally, he wouldn’t last long in a wrestling match against Tate.
After many death threats made by Katrina and three toilet stops they arrived at the Golden Sands Caravan Park. The front office was a small brick building with a mural of starfish on one side. The entrance was surrounded by plants.
“Well, here we are,” announced Tania jumping down the steps of the van. The group unloaded the luggage and then Katrina drove off, trying to find a space in the parking lot. Kim looked up at the glass doors of the entrance and reached into her bag.
“Well, here is my share.”
She handed Tania a lump of cash.
“Saved up a little bit. Been waiting to spend it on something. I guess this it is.”
The others handed lump sums of money and coins to Tania until she had a total of one hundred and eighty dollars. Katrina trudged up to them, looking exhausted.
“The cabin is two hundred for a week…we are here for five day… so its one hundred and fifty for us to stay,” she said studying the big price board near the office.
‘Cool, thirty dollars change’ she thought.
“How much have you got? You did make a reservation didn’t you?”
Tania nodded. She wasn’t dumb enough just to turn up.
“Okay, I’ll pay now,” Tania said, as she entered the caravan park office.
Their cabin was quite plain. It consisted of three tall bunk beds, two wardrobes and one bathroom.
“One bathroom,” Shelley said with a blank face. “One bathroom!” she burst. “How the hell am I going to live knowing I’m sharing a bathroom with two boys?”
Michael shrugged and sat down on one of the bunks. Tate stood uncomfortably in the middle of the room.
“We’re not that bad, Shell,” he said.
Shelley looked slightly mad with her blonde hair in her face and her eyes wide.
“If you leave the seat up, if you use all the hot water in the shower, if you spill any of your hair gel on the sink bench and not clean it up, I will kill you in your sleep,” she warned Tate, pointing her finger at him. No one stood between Shelley and her beauty resume. Tate gulped and ran to join Michael on the other side of the room.
The rain hadn’t returned since during the car ride and the sun was sinking down into the hills.
“Okay I want to make it clear that I am NOT your baby sitter. The only reason I agreed to take you guys here is because I want to see my Aunty Cher. Are we clear?” Katrina said, entering the room huffily. Everybody nodded.
“And I bags this bottom bunk,” she added dumping her bags onto the bed closest to the door.
Tania got the top bunk closest to the window. Underneath her slept Kim. Michael and Tate fought over who got the top bunk and Tate ended up winning. Naturally.
Shelley slept above Katrina near the door. It had all came so quickly. Weeks of fantising about the trip were over. They were experiencing it.
Much to their dismay, night came as soon as they finished unpacking.
Tania listened to her friends talking and pulled out some bottles of beer. Katrina had gone for a walk along the beach. The teenagers saw the drinks and fell silent.
“You’re kidding right?” Shelley said, gaping at Tania.
“All right! Yes! Three cheers for Tay baby!” cheered Tate, snatching the alcohol out of her hand. Michael grabbed a bottle, closely followed by Kim.
Shelley sat on the floor looking at her friends in disbelief. How could the boys be so for alcohol when their mothers were so against it?
“Cheers mate,” said Tate clinking bottles with Michael and then skulling half the drink. Tania uncapped the top and took a swig. She nearly spat it all out again at the sight of Michaels face. It was plastered into a bitter mask, like when you eat a whole lemon.
“Too much for you mate?” asked Kim, giggling. Michael shook his head.
“Nah…it’s cool. I drink beer all the time,” he lied taking another swig. He hid disgust for the beverage only a bit better this time and Shelley sneered.
“I can’t believe you guys! What about Kat? She’ll blow a fuse!”
“She won’t find out,” said Tania calmly, sipping her drink. Shelley pulled a face of pure contempt and then relaxed.
“Fine. I’ll have a beer. But I am surrendering out of peer pressure.”
Kim said something about not pressuring her into anything and that it was her choice. But Shelley seemed to ignore it all and drank the beer. Tania didn’t know why people followed other people.
‘Like sheep,’ she thought, studying Shelley.
That really irritated her. She figured you should do what you want. After all, it’s your life.
“Hey, why don’t we play one of those drinking games?” Shelley said grinning. The idea was fabulous but Tania was amazed that some one so opposed to drinking just a few minutes ago, could suggest an idea as fantastic as that!
“Hell yeah,” agreed Tate. “What about that one with the coin and bucket?”
“Nuh, too complicated. Plus, where are we gonna get a bucket from this late at night?” Kim pointed out. “How about just a simple paper, scissors, rock type method?” she suggested. They all agreed and soon Tate and Shelley were off their face.
“Whasso great about me, issat I can do anysing,” slurred Tate. Even in his drunken state he bragged. “I mean, hey! Whassnot ta like bout’ me?”
Tania laughed and sipped her beer. She shook her hand with Michael into a scissor like gesture and he won with a rock. She skulled the rest off her beer in defeat.
“Well I dunno about you guys but I don’t feel a thing. Maybe it’s because I ate heaps on the way here,” she stated, not the least bit tipsy. Michael was groaning.
“Eer… I don’t feel… that hot right now…” he said, his face pale.
Tate started laughing and slapped Michael on the back.
“Nuh, mate, mate, ya gorgeous you are. Who said you ain’t hot? You’re a good lookin’ dude, mate.”
Tania, Shelley and Kim burst out into fits of laughter.
“No,” Michael croaked. “I mean I feel like crap. I think I’m gonna…”
Michael shot off to the bathroom and they heard the sounded of him being sick.
“Eew!” Shelley said, snorting with laughter. She crawled over to Tate and put her arm around him.
“Ya know what? Now you can live cos’ ya didn’t messup da barfroom. But now I gotta kill him inis blurry sleep. He messtup me toilet bowl,” she said drunkenly. Tate looked literally scared out of his mind until Shelley started snorting with laughter again.
“I’m blurry jokin’ mate! Dun be so scared!”
Michael emerged from the bathroom and hobbled over to his bed.
“Hey guys I’m gonna call it a night. I don’t feel good. You guys might wanna go to sleep to, my sister will be back from her walk soon.”
He lay down and nearly immediately stated snoring. Kim looked mischievously at the bathroom.
“We could put his hand in water you know. Make him piss himself.”
Tania laughed and then shook her head.
“Nuh, he’s right we should call it a night. Will you help me get these two into bed?” she asked, gesturing towards Tate and Shelley, who were singing ‘I’m A Little Teapot’ very loudly.
After several attempts, Kim and Tania got the two into bed and asleep. It proved extremely difficult as they had both chosen the top bunks to sleep on.
“They are gonna have a major hang over,” muttered Tania, climbing up the ladder onto the top bunk. Kim giggled and got into bed.
“So what are we gonna do tomorrow?” asked Kim.
Tania yawned and then smiled.
“Mind if I quote my favourite movie ever?”
“Nuh, go for it.”
“The question isn’t what we are gonna do, the question is what aren’t we gonna do,” said Tania. She heard Kim laugh loudly.
“Ferris Buellers Day Off! Ha, nice!”
“Will ya blurry shudup!” moaned Tate.
The two girls giggled a bit and then fell silent.
They were all asleep with in two minutes, when Katrina walked in.
She was smiling to herself as she climbed drowsily into bed and shut her eyes.
It’s a good thing she didn’t see the ten discarded beer bottles in the rubbish bin.
