Downhill Independence

Somehow the clock had managed in the elapsed lesson time to go forward one hour and then back five minutes. Tania stared irritably at the object on the wall.

It was one thing to have to endure a double period of Mathematics in the scorching heat of summer with no air conditioning in the classroom, but knowing that some crappy, broken clock controlled how long the lesson went for was driving her crazy.

She sighed a long, painful sigh as the hand of the clock went back a minute.

“So the Cartesian co-ordinates you have plotted, you should be able to rule a line through them without missing one,” said the teacher. It was clear the students were oblivious to her directions. Tania was surprised they were all still breathing; the stuffiness of the room was that horrible.

“Tania, did you get a straight line?” asked the math teacher suspiciously.

Startled by the mention of her name, Tania jumped drowsily. She looked down at her text book which was shut and her graph paper, which was blank.

“Ah, yes. Yes it’s a straight line.”

It was amazing that one could bluff their way through a complex math subject, without even knowing what the subject in fact was.

“Very good. I just thought maybe you weren’t concentrating, you seemed to be trying to blow up the clock with your mind,” laughed the teacher. Tania smiled weakly,

shooting a side way glance towards Michael. His grey eyes were fixed sleepily on the book in front of him. His facial expression gave the illusion he was actually focusing on the work, but Tania knew he was dreaming of other things.

Like this summer, all the fun the gang would have. Of course Tania had thought about the very same thing. They had planned the road trip weeks ago and in three days it would all become reality. The beach and friends, what else would they dream about?

That was assuming Michael was dreaming about the road trip.

‘He may just be thinking about all possible scenarios of how the school could burn down,’ thought Tania clicking her pen.

She glanced up once again at the broken piece of technology which was the clock.

It moved back another minute but none the less, home bell rang. No more Math. No more class. No more school. Summer Holidays.

It was like a zoo in the corridors. The seniors were running and down the halls screaming out what Tania thought was derogatory terms towards the teachers. But I mean who could blame them, they were never coming back. Ever.

The bus was even worse. The back seat nearly fell out the back window because they were jumping around so much. Tania had sat in the middle of the bus with Michael and Kim. The conversation turned to the road trip quite quickly.

“It’s gonna be so awesome. I mean, this is the sorta thing they do in the movies!” Kim said happily, her mousy blonde hair a mess around her face.

“Yeah. I just can’t wait to get to the beach. Five days of doing absolutely nothing. Sounds like heaven,” Michael said. Tania raised an eyebrow.

“You’re doing nothing the whole time?”

“Yeah well what else am I gonna do? Apart from meet some gorgeous girls of course,” said Michael. Kim and Tania coughed simultaneously and an argument arose about how much of a perve he was.

The next two days of Tania’s life were full of packing and phone calls. She had to make sure everything went to plan, other wise everyone could end up in some dodgy hotel room the size of a phone booth in some place that wasn’t even on the map.

“Hello?”

“Hey Shell, its Tania.”

“Oh hey babe how’s it going? I’m actually just packing my stuff.”

Tania pressed the phone ear and went over her list in front of her.

“Good thanks. Yeah me too. I don’t know how I fitted all my stuff into one suitcase. Anyway I’m just going over the plan again okay? Do you mind if I run you through it again?”

“Yeah shoot.”

Tania went through all the essentials each person was bringing and the names of the two hotels.

“Now okay so I rang up everyone and they are all going. So Michael’s older sister has agreed to drive us to Wakefay in the mini van. Then we will stay at the caravan park just off the beach. Um… then we will drive to Drainsbury and stay at Michael’s aunties’ house for the last four days.”

Shelley listened attentively as Tania hurried through the plans.

“And who is coming again?” she asked.

“Well, Hannah can’t come anymore because of her parents. So there’s… Me, you, Kim, Michael, and Tate. So that’s… five people. I’ve rang them all except I have to call back Tate so I can reassure his mum that we’ll be okay.”

Tania had spent an hour in total convincing Michael’s mother that the trip was completely safe and his mum had given in and the end but made it clear that he was to ring every four hours through out the trip. Now she had to talk to Tate’s mum. What was it with mothers being so protective of their sons?

“Hello, this is Jack, who is it?”

“Hey Jack, is Tate there, it’s Tania.”

Tania had always thought that was a rude way to answer the telephone, but Jack was only seven so Tania didn’t say anything.

“Hello?” Tate’s voice echoed out of the receiver.

“Okay, put on your mum so I can convince her we are not going to die.”

“Ha ha,” he said sarcastically. “Hold on I’ll just get her. Look Tay, I’ve already tried talking to her and she said she wants all the details from you so…” he trailed off. All Tania heard from him was a feeble “good luck” as he handed the phone to his mother.

“Is this Miss Bailey?” said a sharp voice on the other end of the line.

“Yes, Tania Bailey here. Look I’m phoning because Tate said you wanted some information about the… outing.”

She had nearly said ‘road trip’ but stopped herself. It sounded too wild and dangerous. When you heard the word ‘outing’ you thought of something more peaceful, like a picnic.

“Yes I must say I do not sit very well with the idea of my son sleeping in a creepy cabin, in a dangerous caravan park, with five other teenagers,” said the voice coldly.

Tania cleared her throat.

“Well, ah… we are all very responsible and of course we will have the supervision of Michael’s older sister. Her name is Katrina and she has a job and licence. You can trust her.”

“How old is she?”

“I believe she is twenty Mrs Hunter. I’ve given Tate her contact number and all the destinations we are going to and the names of the caravan park and…”

Tania was wishing right now she could give Tate a kick up the arse for having such an uptight mother.

“So you will all be safe and there will be no silliness?” said Mrs Hunter.

“Or alcohol?” she added.

Tania felt a lump form in her throat but made sure to answer quickly to avoid any suspicion.

“Certainly not. I have never considered drinking alcohol and never will. The others are not having any either. So you don’t need to worry.”

Tania felt proud. She had done a good job of sounding like some alcohol Nazi who had never touched the stuff. Tania had only been drunk once… or twice. Maybe three times.

“I assure you the outing will be very sensible and positive.”

‘I sound like a bloody salesman,’ thought Tania.

There was silence on the other end for a few seconds and then a sigh.

“Fine. I suppose I can allow Tate to go with you. But I want him to call at least every five hours and no silly business!” said Mrs Hunter.

“Of course. Thank you Mrs Hunter. Bye,” said Tania sweetly.

Tania slammed the receiver onto bench with a bang.

‘Bloody hell it’s like taming a freaking jaguar. Not to worry, Tate and Michael can sit down and ring their mother’s together.’

Tania slid off the kitchen stool and went into her room. All her things were packed away neatly in a bright blue wheelie bag.

She placed her list of luggage neatly on top of the bag and flung onto her bed.

It was going to be an interesting summer.
