Chapter Two
“Invited”
“Mother!” Rayne gasped. She hurried off the stage to greet the unexpected guest. “What are you doing here?” Her tone reflected a carefully placed query, “I’m not in trouble this time, am I?” Rayne asked while the two embraced.
“No, no! Not unless you’ve forgotten to show or tell me something lately?” Rayne’s mother, Elizabeth Ann St. Leude, grinned.
“Of course not, mother! I’m your perfect little angel!” replied Rayne, which gave a slight grin in response.
“So, what does it look like this year, sweetie?” asked Mother, referring to the schedule.
“Oh, you know, the usual! Here you are.” Rayne handed Mother the rectangular, hot-pink sheet of paper.

“German this year?” asked Mother, and raised her eyebrows in question.
“Sure, why not?”
“How about taking some Latin this year, instead?” Mother shot back, with obvious hidden meanings.
“I guess I can get it changed later on, probably on Monday, when they begin allowing us to make changes to our schedules. I know you have a reason for this… won’t you tell me?” questioned Rayne.
“Uhm, no.” mother replied.
Just then, Markus, the beautiful stranger that Rayne encountered earlier that morning, walked up.
“Why, look who it is! Aren’t you Drake’s son?”
“Yes, I’m Drake Duvall’s descendant. I take it you are Elizabeth… St. Leude?” he replied with a grin not too far off.
"The one and only! And this, before I forget to introduce you two, is my beloved daughter, --"
"Rayne."
"How'd you know?" Mother inquired, taken aback by the idea of being interrupted, mid-sentence.
"Oh, we had--" Rayne started.
"a clash before schedules." Markus finished for her. "Well, I best get to Physics!"
"See ya there, Markus!" added Rayne. "Wow, he's beautiful, and quite a gentleman too!" thought Rayne as she said farewell to her mother and exited the auditorium, walking towards her Physics class in a thoughtful daze.
The rest of the day went by in a blur... After getting over the fact that Rayne ended up with 4 out of 6 classes with Markus, sitting close to him in most of them, things seemed to go just fine. Until Markus kindly refused Megsie's offer to go off campus for lunch. Megsie, who had the belief that she was a little "Ms. Perfect", without exaggeration, for it was written all over her notebooks for every class, just couldn't believe the thought that she had been turned down by a guy. After that little incident, Markus sat with Rayne all throughout the rest of the combined classes.
'Finally finished with my last class of the day, and now I'm ready for a nice long catnap!" thought Rayne as she walked out of the double doors at the end of the hallway, and headed for the parking lot, where her Chevrolet Cobalt SS was waiting for her. After being stuck in her parking spot for nearly ten minutes, mostly due to freshmen and their inability to drive with common sense, Rayne's drive home was quite uneventful.
"Here's your mail, madam!" Laurie, the newly hired housekeeper, greeted Rayne and handed her a bundle of envelopes and fliers. In the stack, was a card from her mother, who left for New York today around 10:30, an envelope with no return address, and also a letter from the school, containing a copy of Rayne's schedule and a reminder to renew her parking tickets for the year. The card from Mother was just a simple reminder to keep the house tidy and not to make Laurie's first few months too horrible; and of course, to keep the family in line. Inside the mysterious envelope was a simple note. In an old fashioned scrawl, it read:
“Looks like you've adjusted well, here at McKain! Why don't you join me for an evening meal and all tomorrow night at my place?
-Markus”
After reading the note, and re-reading it again just to be sure she was awake and not going out of her mind, Rayne called Jade.
“Hey Jade. It's Rayne. I have the most amazingly wonderful news...” Rayne blurted out after the phone was answered by her best friend.
“Mhm, and what is it?!” Jade was a touch preoccupied with either Calculus or physics homework, which both, Rayne and Jade had that night... Rayne could hear it in her voice.
“Well... I received an invitation to dine with Markus tomorrow night.”
“DO WHAT? An evening meal at the Duvall Manor?” Jade exclaimed, dropping her TI-89, mid-problem.
“Isn't it wonderful?!” Rayne couldn't contain her happiness.
“It's amazing! Have you picked out your outfit yet?” Jade asked, hoping to give pointers for her friend.
“No... That's why I'm calling. Can I kid-nap you tomorrow after school for a few hours, and take you home around five? I honestly don't know what to wear, and if I cannot find anything in my closet- then I'm going shopping, and you know, I always get your input..... So- Can you? PLEASE?!” Rayne begged...
“Rayne. Of course I will. Let me make a few calls to clear my schedule, and then allow me to call you back, okay girl?” Jade replied, while flipping pages in her organizer.
The next morning, Jade and Rayne met at their lockers to discuss the plans made for the day. As books were being piled into the tiny cramped lockers, Jade turned and spoke to Rayne. “So, have you accepted the invite? You best have!”
“Well, not yet. I'm not exactly sure that I should...” Rayne replied.
Jade gasped.
“Oh, so you're planning on making me spend this lovely evening by myself? Dear, isn't that just a touch rude?” Markus walked up and hugged her waist, then turned to her and gave a crooked smile, awaiting a reply.
“I guess it could be considered rude, but then again, I don't really know you, now do I?” Rayne replied, challengingly.
“There's only one way to change that.”
“True, but why change it?”
“I have my reasons, which I will explain tonight, if you come?” he asked questioningly.
Rayne sighed and countered the question, “Is it to be formal or not?”
“Informal, if thats what it takes to get you to come...”
“See you then... what time did you say?”
Markus looked up surprised. “Eight, does that sound alright?”
“I was thinking more along seven, but eight will be fine.” Rayne replied.
“Alright, see you then.” He smiled.
“Eight sharp!” Rayne confirmed with a returning smile. 'I guess I do have plans tonight'
Jade just stood there for a second, stunned by Rayne's unexpected talk with Markus. “So I take it,” she began, teasingly with a slight smile,” that you have plans tonight?”
“Guess so... do you, and how's that boyfriend search coming along?” Rayne responded.
“Eh. High school is too immature, although, 'Monsieur Duvall' is a possibility... Though, he'd never be interested in me!” Jade mentioned, with a sigh.
“Aw, hun, I'm sorry...” Rayne tried to cheer up her friend, “ just remember; There are more fish in the sea than just that one!”
“I'll be fine! You know me!” Jade replied with a halfhearted smile.
That instant, the bell rang for first period, so the friends dispersed and school began.
