Ben
|
When i was in my freshman year of high school i saw this boy about my age wearing these dorky glasses and carrying what looked like all his books. i thought he must be a real nerd to bring that much homework home with him. just then a couple of guys ran past the kid and knocked all the books from his arms. they never even looked to see what they did. i hurried over to where the boy was picking up his stuff and helped. i said hi and he said hi and for a few minutes we didn't say anything. then he told me his name was ben. i told him mine (Alex) and we started to talk as we walked home together. turns out he lived just a few houses away from each other and we were in the same grade. by the end of the day i felt as if i had made a new friend.
as we grew up i grew more athletic and ben grew smarter. ben even started to look good in his glasses. in our senior year ben was picked validictorian and had to make a speech infront of the whole school. i wanted to know what he was going to say but he wouldn't let me see what he had prepared. when the big day arrived i took my seat and listened to all the borring speeches until it was ben's turn. what he said shocked me and the entire school. in his speech he said that in freshman year he had no friends what-so-ever and that he had decided to kill himself that night. he was going to take everything home so his mom didn't have to come to the school and get it. then the boys ran him over and then i showed him friendship and he made all these new friends and he would never do anything that stupid again. i sat there in silence with my mouth hanging open along with half the school.
i mean, who would have thought that this guy who was so popular would have almost killed himself. and i was the reason he wasn't in a grave somewhere.
i'll never underestimate friendship again.

I've heard a story almost exactly like this a few times before. |
