“Would you like to take a walk with me in the garden?” My grandmother asked kindly. It was the first thing she had said to me since she locked me in. I couldn’t believe she could hold me prisoner and then act like nothings wrong and ask for me to be civil.
“Why?” I retorted, kind of rudely but I didn’t care.
“I would like to apologize for my discourteous behavior earlier and I would like to get to know my granddaughter.” She seemed slightly hesitant, like she wasn’t sure if she really wanted that.
Well I couldn’t have cared if she liked me or not. The only thing I was concerned about was finding Kainen.
I had been moping around since yesterday when I was left in the room, thinking about ways I could possibly escape so I could go find Kainen. I was basically settling on just catching the door when they brought me food and pushing past the deliverer and going from there, but then my grandmother asked for a stroll outside. Perfect.
“Okay.” She looked slightly surprised at my answer, but quickly accepted it and spread out an arm as if to beckon me forward.
Slowly I got up off the bed which I had been sitting on, and followed her out the door.
I made a silent prayer that I’d be able to escape as we walked down an intricately decorated hallway. The walls made of a soft green paper with elaborate patterns. Here and there were small pillars with dissimilar objects, like a flowerpot or a short statue. At the end of the hall was an enormous room. The walls were gold and shone with the bright white tiled floor. On the other end of this room was another short hallway which led through the main door and straight outside.
As soon as we were outside she positioned herself beside me, and wrapped her arm around mine like we were best friend. It was slightly awkward to me, but I was feeling slightly kind and so I didn’t say anything. She led me across the front lawn over a cobble stone path around the house until we reached an arch which marked the entrance to the garden.
Our feet followed the path through the rose garden, filled solely with every different color rose. Then she began, “Armelle, I have been contemplating you situation all night and have decided that it is up to you on what your course of action will be. I was only so fervent about you not being with your sorcerer because when I was your age I, too, fell in love with a sorcerer. Mine was not a happy ending, however, as it turned out he only wanted the power that he’d get as King for marrying me. My parents were furious, needless to say, and if I had had any younger siblings they would have denounce me of the crown and give it to them. But I was the only available recipient. Luckily they were quick at finding me a suitable husband so I didn’t have to rule alone. He was very nice, but I never truly loved him. Your mother was a lot like you: Very adventurous and a firm believer in love. We had set up a courtship between her and a proper young man from the neighboring town, but she didn’t love him. Well we ended in an argument over it, and that night I had decided to let her find love but in the morning I had discovered her gone and she had been missing ever since. I was afraid that if I let you go you’d never come back like her and I felt very scared that I’d never get to know my grandchild. You seem a very proper young lady, Armelle, and I think the kingdom would be well controlled under your power.” She stopped. We had just walked in a big circle through the garden, but I too lost in thought to notice any of the flowers. My grandmother was not at all as bad as I had thought, and I could hardly believe the change in character.
She turned me to face her, looking intently in my eyes. “Now, if you wish to go off and find your true love, I will let you as long as you promise to come back.” She smiled, and I knew she was sincere.
I gave her a hug, glad that I had such a wonderful grandmother. Then I remembered that I didn’t even know her name yet.
“What is your name?” I asked.
“Oh dear, I had forgotten to give you that didn’t I? Well at such an old age it is not uncommon for me to forget things.” She laughed, “It is Nadia.”
“Thank you grandma Nadia. I will be to return as soon as my quest in completed.”
Then I leaned in and gave her a kiss on the cheek.
“Take care, darling.” She gave me a small smile, her eyes glistening from the collection of tears. “Take the main road out of the forest.” She direction, tilting her head in the direction of the front of the house.
I took off in the direction she had indicated, following the path around the house to the front, then following the road away. Pretty soon I reached the forest and started in a light jog, wanted to cover as much ground as possible but not use up all my energy.
Before long I found myself deep inside the forest, the light dim from the canopy of trees. Inside the forest was too dark to see, and a rustle behind a bush informed me of some creature hiding there. The hairs on the back of my neck prickled as if telling me to run. Following my gut I quickened my stride.
Suddenly a dark figure jumped onto the path into my way, and I skidded to a halt.
“Miss me princess?” His voice was very menacing, sending shivers through my spine.
There was small patch of light in front of him which he stepped into on his way toward me. Aleron. He was looking fiercely at me, slightly crouched over like an animal. Something caught the sun and glistened in his hand and I immediately recognized it as a knife.
I stood frozen, my mind screaming ‘run!’ but ignored by my feet. He was only a few feet away before I found my motion and turned to run. But before I had even gained a couple feet he had grabbed me from behind, wrapping his arms around me tightly.
I could feel the cold metal of the knife on my neck as he spoke sharply into my ear, “Nyxali doesn’t like to be overturned.”

haha i love it tho. kmpp.
