Once Upon a Time (Thirty-One)

Slowly the break split open and branched of into other fractures revealing a bright white light in-between the cracks. I watched in fear, not knowing what was happening. The egg was dividing in half and a vividly white orb was beginning to rise out of its former enclosure. Kainen’s soul. My gaze followed it as it floated up almost level with my eyes. Then, unexpectedly, it shot out the window quicker than my reflexes as I lunged to catch it, leaving me sprawled on the floor.
“Oh dear,” Bliss muttered from the corner, suddenly making her attendance noticed.
“Bliss…” I began, trying to gain control of my voice through the threatening tears, “What happens to a soul if it leaves the egg this far from its body?” I had to force the last part out, my strength dissolving in the seeming loss of Kainen’s soul.
“I-I-I don’t know.” She confessed, hanging her head in sorrow before adding in a whisper, “Probably just wander.”
I was devastated. Kainen’s soul just flew out the window, and now he’d probably be lost forever, flying aimlessly through the world. No, I had to be with my Kainen, I had to do something! I’d search every nook and cranny of this world to find him, even if it took my whole life. I would not, could not, live knowing I just let his life-force slip away, knowing I had gotten so close, knowing I had failed.
“Good! Now I do not have to worry about him.” My unwanted grandmother cheered, believing her granddaughter was now free of the filth that jeopardized her royal position.
Promptly I pulled myself up off the floor and stood to stand face to face with my grandma. I glared at her as I strongly declared, “I am going to search for him.”
“You will do no such thing!” She said, aghast.
          “Yes I will.” I defy.
“I forbid you to!” She attempted, angry, stepping forward to grab a hold of my arm.
“NO!” I tried to twist out of her grasp, but she was holding on too tight.
“Miss Armelle!” I heard Bliss cry just as the room faded away with another yell by my grandmother.
“Home, Fellor!”
It was as if the whole earth dropped away and I was falling through the vast emptiness it left behind. But the feeling only lasted a mere second before the ground surprised me once again under my feet. Everything was foggy, but I could tell I was in a different place. My predictions were correct as the fog slowly cleared I came to realize I was in a bedroom. It was elegantly decorated with a gigantic vanity against one wall that seemed to be made of gold. The dresser and bed frame seemed to be made of the same golden metal, beautifully paired with a deep red. There was a single window outlined with draperies that matched the bed. The floor was covered in the softest carpet I had ever felt and the wall opposite the bed had an enormous panting of some sort of battle between demons and angels the color scheme of red and gold matching the room intricately.
“Do you like it?” My grandmother asked and I suddenly was aware of her presence by my side.
Oddly, I did; it seemed very regal. But I wasn’t going to tell her that. “Where did you take me?” I demand.
“This is my castle, soon to be yours. This is the room you will be staying at until your coronation.” She informed casually.
I groaned. There was no way to get through to this woman! It was impossible!
“Did you not here me the last million times I told you: I’m not staying with you!” I practically shout.
“I am not going to make the same mistake with you as I did your mother!” Her voice was pained, and she had to shut her eyes to stop the tears. I stood there mutely, not expecting a reaction like that.
Then, without warning, she very gracefully turned around and left the room, shutting the door behind her.  I quickly ran to the door after her, hearing the faint click of a lock just as I reached it. I grabbed the handle and conformingly it didn’t budge. I was locked in.
I flashbacked to when I had been locked up with Kainen, and I didn’t want to be anyone’s prisoner again. I could feel the anger surge through me, slightly dampened though by the thought of Kainen that made my heart ache, but not dampened enough to stop me from madly throwing myself against the door in attempt to break it down.
It didn’t budge even the slightest and made my whole body hurt. I didn’t dare to try it again and so I went to my second choice for escape: the window.
The drapes had been slightly pulled over so I hadn’t noticed that there were bars before. Gleaming gold bars that smothered any chance of getting away in that form. Looking out the window I noticed we were so high up the only thing I could see below me were clouds, and I discovered that even if the bars weren’t there, there was no way I’d be able to get out that way.
I sat down under the window in defeat. I was trapped, captured, confined to that single room at the mercy of my seemingly relentless grandmother, whom I realized I didn’t even know the name to.
It was so frustrating! I had gotten so close to saving Kainen, only to be stopped by an unknown relative. I couldn’t save him if I was locked up in this place. Tears poured out of my eyes at those revelations. I had failed.
