I wrapped my arms around Landon’s motionless body, my tears soaking the cloth I had wrapped around him as I pressed my head against his chest not wanting to accept the fate that seemed to be approaching.
A world without him wouldn’t be a world I wanted to live in. I couldn’t imagine a day that I didn’t get to talk to him, see him, or even not have the simple knowledge that he was still alive somewhere. Life would me meaningless; I’d have no reason to keep going, no reason to live for I’d never be whole again. He had my heart, and if he died he’d take my heart with him.
I was faintly aware of the men’s voices growing slightly louder as they searched for something, but my attention was mainly on the slow yet steady beat of Landon’s heart. I had to focus on it to stop the depressing thoughts that had begun to play across my mind. He wasn’t dead yet; there was still hope.
I clung to this hope desperately, knowing that if I let go I would slip away.
Just then his heart picked up its pace slightly. At first I wasn’t sure if I was hearing right when the beat came in a smaller interval than the one before. Silently praying I listened intently, wanting to be sure before I let the hope grow even though it already had. And I had been right; they were getting closer and closer with every beat. I could hardly believe it.
I lifted myself up so I could look at him, and sure enough his chest was rising and falling again. He was breathing!
“Landon.” I whispered, running my hand along the side of his face.
I didn’t know how it happened or how, but I presumed it was because he was a vampire now.
For a moment I let my focus transfer off of Landon and to our surroundings, noticing right away that there were men coming.
“I thought I saw something over here.” I heard one say as he bounced his flashlight around the spot where me and Landon were. He was still quite a ways away and there was a bush blocking his view of us, but I knew it would only be a matter of time before they found us.
I couldn’t let him find us. They were probably the police again, looking for me, and if they found me they’d take me away to my family and I didn’t know what he’d do to Landon but I could guess it would be bad. I had to stay with Landon.
Quickly I shifted back to Landon, trying to figure out what to do.
I knew I couldn’t move him for he weighed too much for me, and I couldn’t think of any other way to get away.
Just then Landon’s eyelashes fluttered and he opened his eyes.
“Kayri!” He exclaimed, his voice still hoarse and fortunately unable to get very loud.
“Shh..” I said urgently, “We need to leave.”
He lifted himself up to a seating position without a hint of pain on his face.
“Are you okay?” I asked, perplexed at his obvious lack of pain.
He looked down at his chest, putting his hand over the wound before looking up again with a slight smile.
“Perfect.” He said, slowly unwrapping the stain covered cloth to reveal that the wound had already healed for the most part leaving only a small scar.
Slowly I lifted up my hand and put it over the scar, amazed that he had been able to heal that fast.
“They’re over here!” The abrupt call broke the wonder I held over Landon’s injury and reminded me that we had to leave, fast.
“Let’s go.” I took Landon’s hand and stood, making him do the same.
“Yes, lets.” Then he pulled me close to his chest and wrapped his arms around me. “Hold on.” He instructed and I obeyed, confused for a moment before I remembered that Landon had wings, and flying was faster than running. Plus, there was no way they’d catch us in the air I realized. I smiled, it was a good idea.
In one strong leap, and a few beats of his wings the ground fell away and we were in the air, the wind blowing against my face. I could tell we were going fast by the strength of the wind and I held on tighter to Landon as he flew gracefully through the air. Curious to as how high we had gotten in that mere second, I cautiously turned my head, amazed and completely frightened as I observed that the trees had became but spots on the ground. Quickly I turned to bury my head in Landon’s chest as the thought of what would happen if I fell popped into my head.
“Almost there.” He said, slowing down and losing altitude.
A moment later the earth was under my feet again with a great decrease in wind.
As soon as I had gained my feet back I looked around to discover where Landon had taken us.
The land was seemingly bare except for a single structure off to the side. I immediately recognized it as the old abandoned run-down barn that I had found Landon in after he had become a vampire.
