I climbed through the high tower window without a glance at the ground. I could feel the changes in the air from how high I had gotten and I didn't need the actual proof of looking down; as it was it was starting to be a bit much. I felt slightly lightheaded and exhausted as I clambered into the room.

The window was larger than it appeared on the ground and so it was very easy to climb through, but it was hard to keep my balance through the windowsill and I ended up tumbling over the bench perched under the window and onto the floor.

I slowly got up and brushed myself off before looking around the bare room with only a pillow in the corner and then finding myself staring into the black eyes of the biggest brightest white hen I had ever seen. I hadn't noticed my gaping mouth until it spoke.

“Oh quit your gawking” She rolled her eyes, putting her wings over her hips, if hens even have hips, and stared at me. I was aware now that I was still ogling, although now it was because she had talked.

“Y-y-you talked.” I muttered, hardly believing it. Maybe it was the heat, but I wasn't hot. Maybe I was going crazy. Oh great. The hen chuckled as I lowered myself to sit on the bench.

“Yes I did. Am I not supposed to?” She asked, cocking her head to the side.

“Um, no it's okay.” I answered, trying to settle my voice. I wondered why a talking hen was such a shock to me, a lot of weird things had happened to me. Must have been the hight, yes the hight. There was nothing wrong with a talking hen. I laughed.

“Okay good, because I enjoy talking.” She smiled. “Don't get many visitors up here ya know? and when they do come its just to make me lay them their true love's soul and then they leave.” She make a few clicking noises and shook her head. “They didn't really care for me; I was just a pawn, a tool. People, ya know? Only coming to get what they want and leaving as soon as they have it. Nobody cared about the hen.” She sighed, “They couldn't even bother to spend an hour socializing with me after their egg was laid.” She sighed again, suddenly looking up to stare at me with wide eyes. “Ohhh! Are you going to leave me too? After I give you your soul-egg-mate? That is what your here for, isn't?”

“Um, yes.” I replied uncertainly, she shifted and a slight sod escaped her lips and I realized she misunderstood me. “I mean, yes that is why I'm here but I would love to socialize with you for a bit.” I hastily explained and she calmed down.

“Oh yay!” She squealed, flapping her wings excitingly. “This is going to be so amazing... oh! I forgot to ask your name!”

“Armelle,” I replied smiling, her enjoyment contagious.

“Armelle,” She said to herself, as if to write in on her brain. “I'm called Bliss.” She grinned back. “Oh! this is going to be so much fun!” She clucked over to me and set next to me on the bench, her tail trailing behind. “You've got to tell me everything! oh! everything!” She exclaimed.

And so, to be kind, I did. I told her of all my adventures from the witches house up until now. I didn't tell her of my childhood for she was a very chatty hen and I didn't want to evoke any questions about that period of my life. One, because it wasn't happy, but also because it was obviously different than here.

“That is so romantic!” She exclaimed as I finished, “Saving your true love's fate. Oh! that reminds me!” She hopped off the bench and turned around to sit on the floor in front of my feet. I wondered what she was doing for a second but before I could ask she got up, leaving the glowing golden egg at my feet.

The room seemed to get brighter as I slowly reached my hand out to grab the egg, to obtain Kainen's soul. But just as my hands touched the smooth object, the light faded and a foot was placed over the egg, keeping it glued to the floor.

Who dare step on that egg! I fumed silently, lifting my gaze up past the dress heel to the perfectly smooth skin, up the sparling glitter of a purple dress into a face of a gray haired beautiful old woman with a scowl on her face. How did she get in here?

“Oh! Don't step on the egg!” The hen cried, her eyes wide.

“I order you to shush.” The old lady commanded. Bliss pouted but obeyed. There was an aura of authority surrounding the elder lady.

I stood up so my eyes were even with the old lady's. emitting fumes. Who did she think she is? I opened my mouth to speak, but what cut off before I could get anything out.

“I will not have my granddaughter gallivanting around the land in order to save a sorcerer.” She scowled on the last word. “Especially if she is to take the throne!”

Granddaughter? Throne? My head spun; what was she talking about? My frown of anger turned to a frown of confusion.

“Your mother never told you, did she?” She spoke more softly this time. “I suppose she never figured you'd find your way here.”

My mother, she was talking about my mother. What did my mother never tell me?

“Your a princess dear, heiress of my crown.”
