Once Upon a Time (Twenty-Eight)

He dropped me out of his hands and I landed with a thud on the ground. In that instant I decided I wasn’t going to run anymore; it was time to fight. I lifted my sword up and started running toward the giant to stab him. The giant, who was surprised, didn’t have enough time to react until my sword found its way wedged into its flesh.
It screamed in pain as it flicked me away, my sword still stuck in him. The pain hit me then and my screams joined with his.
Then, suddenly, I was the only one screaming. I stopped, finding that I wasn’t hurting anymore. I looked up astonished to see the giant lying motionless on the ground. I frowned in puzzlement, not thinking my little sword was enough to kill him.
“Finally, I thought you were going to keep that up forever.” The voice joked, laughing from behind the giant. I watched as he stepped out from behind the creature. He was dressed in overalls and a simple t-shirt on. “My name is Jack, by the way,” He said, holding out an arm toward me as he got nearer. As he got closer, i noticed he was probably in his late thirties/early forties.
“Armelle.” I stated as soon as he was close enough for me to take his hand and shake it.
“Nice to meet you.” He smiled sincerely.
“Is he dead?” I wondered, looking past him at the still enormous body.
“Oh no, you did a little bit of damage with that sword but not enough to kill him.” He stated, “Anyway, if he was dead the hen wouldn’t have any protection.”
“What did you do to it?” I questioned, curious.
“I sang to it” He said simply.
“Sang to it?” I repeated.
“Yep, puts it too sleep.” He grinned softly, then added, “I suppose you are here to see the hen?”
“Oh, yeah.” I remembered I had to get Kainen’s soul back.
He stepped to the side and put out his arm as invitation to the tower. “Go ahead; I gotta take care of this brute.”
I stepped past him and went up to the tall tower, looking around the bottom for a door but there wasn’t one. I went back to the side closest to the giant.
“Hey Jack?” I called.
“Yeah?” I heard his mumbled reply coming from somewhere near the giant.
“How do I get in?” I asked, hoping he’d know. I watched as he emerged slightly.
“Sorry, can’t help you there. Not allowed to.” He explained before disappearing behind the giant again.
I sighed, frustrated. I looked the tower all over again, finding only a single window near the top of the tower. I stood underneath it and stared up at it. How was I supposed to get all the way up there?
I sat down, defeated, letting all the possibilities come to me. Ladder-didn’t have one, climb-couldn’t, rope-unattainable. It was hopeless.
In desperation I stood back up and called to the hen. “Hey up there!”
Not even a flicker of movement, what if the hen wasn’t really up there?
“Hey hen!” I called again, Cupping my hands over my mouth to amplify my voice and yelling as loud as I could.
Just then there was a movement and the hen appeared in the window looking at me. I couldn’t see it very well from the distance I was at, but it looked very clean and sparkly. Something long swooshed behind the hen and then lay over the side of the window and I realized the hen had an abnormally long tail.
In that moment of realization an idea hit me. I thought I was crazy, but I decided it didn’t matter; I needed to try everything.
“Hen! Hen! Let down your tail!” I shouted up to the bird, quickly adding in “Please!” as not to sound rude.
The hen got down off of the windowsill and I took that as a no. I looked down to my feet in disappointment.
Then something soft landed on my head before sliding off. I looked up astonished to see an exceedingly long white feathery tail hanging from the tower window.
My plan worked. I could hardly believe it. I didn’t know how a hen was going to hold all my weight, but it must have thought it could otherwise it wouldn’t have loaned me its tail.
“Thanks!” I called hesitantly before testing my weight on the soft train. There were no screams of pain from above so I took a deep breath and lifted myself so I was fully hanging from the tail.
Inch by inch I lifted myself up, trying to be as gentle as possible.
Climbing up the tail of a hen, who would’ve guessed?
