“Hello there missus!” The plump man called when he noticed me. “Would you like to buy a magic bean?” His eyes widened in enthusiasm.
“What's magic about them?” I inquired, curiously taking a couple steps forward.
“Magic is a curious thing missus. Don't rightly know how it works but it always seems to give you what you'd be needing the most.” He nodded, agreeing with himself.
I wasn't sure what I needed the most. Probably food or a sign or something telling me where to go, I deducted. Of one thing I was certain, however, and that was that I needed something, either of them really. The gingerbread cookie wasn't going to hold me over for long, and the winding golden road had ended with no other clue as to where I should go.
“Please missus, my children are dreadfully hungry and I have no money to buy food with.” The man begged, and I noticed how his clothes were all ratty and worn.
“Why don't you use one of them magic beans?” I inquired, while I searched my dress for money and coming up empty.
“I've tried, missus. The beans insist that I need a wife more, but all the prospects it sends find out about how I believe in these little beans and they leave, calling me an idiot. So I set about to sell 'em.” He explained.
“Why here? Do you get a lot of traffic through here?” I questioned, confused. It seemed like a pretty deserted place to me; There wasn't any sign of life as far as my eyes could see.
“I'd reckon not.” He shook his head.
“Then why are you posted here?” I frowned, not understanding.
“Don't rightly know.” He ran his fingers under his chin, deep in thought.
“Where do you live?” I didn't see a house anywhere either.
“Way down yonder.” He pointed to the right.
I squinted my eyes in that direction, but still couldn't see anything.
“So are ya going to buy a bean?” He asked, hopeful.
“Well, I don't have any money.” I admitted apologetically.
“What about that there cookie.” He pointed to the gingerbread man in my hands.
I hesitated, thinking it over. It might not be much but it was all the food I had, although if I really needed food the bean would give me it right? Then I thought, a bean! How was a bean suppose to solve my problems? And how was I suppose to now it was really magical? If it wasn't I'd be completely out of luck, but what other options did I have? I gave in.
“Alright.” I mumbled, and handed over the cookie. He gave me the bean. I looked at it, trying to figure out why it was so special, but it just looked like a normal bean to me.
“How does it work?” I asked.
“Just play it and then wait for it to grow what'cha need.” He smiled, and then he turned and placed the gingerbread man on his cart and started rolling it toward the direction where he said his house was.
I watched him get smaller and then when he had gone several yards away I saw the gingerbread man come to life and just off the cart yelling “Run! Run! As fast as you can! You can't catch me I'm the gingerbread man!”
The man, in an obvious fit of rage wheeled his cart in the way the gingerbread man had ran and hollered after him, “Hey! Come back! You're mine!” with one arm pounding the air.
I almost cracked up at the sight of the chunky man running after the little creature, but he was my payment for the little bean so I thought better of it, even though he probably wouldn't have even heard.
I watched them sway this way and that, one trailing behind the other. After almost tipping the cart over while trailing back and forth they finally ran over the horizon and out of sight.
I looked back down at the little bean, then picked a patch of dirt away from the road. Digging a little hole with my fingers, I dropped the bean down and covered it back up. I sat down next to the little mound and waited, as there was nothing else for me to do.
Slowly but surely the sun made its journey down the sky, painting colors across the sky before fading to black at the end of it's trip. Before it went dark, though, a few storm clouds started rolling in, and just as the stars made their debut so did the rain.
It rained softly at first, and I figured I could handle it just a little, but then it picked up and I was soaked. Needless to say I was peeved, I didn't have any shelter and I couldn't go anywhere else- not that there was anywhere else to go-because I had to stay by the bean. I sat on the ground, in a heap of frustration, as exhaustion tried to overcome me. I did my best to fight it, not wanting to lay on the wet ground, but pretty soon it overcame me and I fell into slumber on the hard, cold, wet ground.
The night seemed to drag on forever, it seemed like one thing or another was waking me up about every half an hour or so. The first time I woke up because of the rain, the second was the cold, third something hit me or something, and et cetera all the same.
Finally, it was morning and I woke to the bright sun in my face and the sound of birds tweeting. Slowly consciousness filled me, and I realized there hadn't been any birds the day before. I shot up and suddenly became aware of a giant beanstalk where I had buried my bean.
Oh great, I thought, it thinks I need a beanstalk. I couldn't figure out how I was in need of a beanstalk as I raised my gaze slowly passed the giant leaves and the many birds till the stalk disappeared into the clouds.
