The winding road kept winding, true to it's name. Between rocky walls, through meadows and plains of vast greenery, over rolling hills dotted with exotic flowers it wound with no destination in sight.
It was nearly nightfall, and I hadn't had a drop of food since morning when I parted company with the avatars. They had given me food, though I had stupidly dropped it when I sighted the Angel.
I trudged on, getting droopy.
It seemed like the landscape was just replaying over, because of the distinct lack of anything new despite the flowers, and even those seemed to be duplicating.
If I hadn't had such a solid purpose for my quest I was sure I would've keeled over and slept. But Kainen needed me, and I was going to save him in the least amount of time possible.
Suddenly I tripped, landing face don on the golden path. I lifted my head and to my surprise a little creature ran past me, no taller than a foot, calling “Run! Run! as fast as you can!”
I stared at it in awe while I picked myself back up, it was the first living thing I had seen since my rendezvous with the trolls.
I was confused for a moment, wondering whether it was yelling to me.
“You can't catch me I'm the Gingerbread man!” It added, not getting very far on those tiny legs.
As if on cue, the smell of gingerbread filled the air, and I could feel the build up of saliva as I could almost taste its gingery goodness.
I fought the urge to switch my course and capture the little bugger and eat him for dinner, only vaguely aware that I'd be consuming something that could talk. I was starving; the verbal ability didn't mean anything.
Before I had made up my mind on which action to take, a herd of different animals ran past, lead by an elderly man and woman, who were eagerly calling out for it to stop. A pig, a cow, a horse, and a sheep were right on their heals.
They were running slightly slower than the gingerbread, almost in slow motion. I chuckled, not really understanding why they didn't go faster because with their longer legs that obviously held more muscle they should have been able to overtake him after his first leap.
I calculated that it would only take me a mere moment to capture the delicacy, so I started running behind the mass.
As I expected I quickly passed them and nears closer to the little gingerbread man who had become but a speck in the distance, slowly growing larger as I closed in on him.
With my eyes on the prize I didn't notice the lengthy wall that was also getting closer, not until the man had stopped underneath. He was standing under a ladder that was leaning against the high wall, jumping as high as he could trying to grasp the first rung with no luck.
“Oh dear! Oh dear! There getting near!” He muttered between jumps, not seeming to notice me.
I watched him in amusement for a moment, wondering what to do. Should I help him, or eat him? I decided on a bit of both.
“Do you need help little man?” I asked, politely, trying to hide the ravenous hunger that had overcome me.
“Yes please! Yes please! help me with the climb and I'll spare you the time!” He cried.
I didn't quite know what he meant, but I did understand that he had accepted my help.
I swooped him up into my hand and started climbing up the ladder. rung by rung I climbed up the ladder, unsteady as it swayed back in forth. it had looked fine without the weight, but with my weight it was about as still as a rope bridge.
Soon I made it up to the top, my prize still in my hands. I looked out over the other side as I made it to the top. gasping as I realized there was nothing there – it was all black.
In my agitation, I found myself slipping off the edge into the black abyss, landing with a thump on the hard ground. I knew that that should have hurt extremely bad, but I hadn't felt any worse than before.
I slowly got up, strangely noticing I was back on the golden winding road, the gingerbread man stiff in my hands.
I wondered what had happened, did I dream it all? Did I pass out when I tripped and had some strange vision? I wasn't sure, but the gingerbread man was still in my hands, though he was now lifeless and unable to speak. I looked at it in wonder, just waiting for it to jump back to like and try to pry its way out of my hands, but it didn't.
My stomach growled and I found myself slowly bringing my hand up to my mouth to eat the cookie.
Just then I heard a man in the distance calling “Magic beans for sale!”
I decided to put off eating the gingerbread man, and went to investigate.
The man was big and bulky, standing by a cart that didn't seem to have any goods on it. I noticed oddly that the golden trail had ended, and I found myself at a loss for what to do next. A crazy idea came to me then, maybe the magic bean had something to do with were I went next? Only one way to find out..
