Each moment brought him closer, anticipation spreading farther into my being. Impatience radiated through my every pore. I wanted to just grab him and pull him to me, but something was holding me back which I realized were Landon’s hands softly yet firmly gripping my arms. It seemed like years before his lips finally met mine, and I melted into his embrace. We had kissed before, but never was it this intense.
Suddenly he broke away, shoving me behind him. His strength landed me on the floor, putting my arms down to break my fall. I turned around in anger, wondering why he would do that, when I noticed he had taken a protective stance and there was a shadow looming in the doorway. Landon growled.
The dark form laughed a high shrill-like chuckle and I instantly knew it was a girl.
She had wings like Landon’s and the same pale complexion so I immediately knew she was a vampire as well.
“Well, aren’t you a passionate one?” She scoffed; her voice was dark and sending chills through my body.
Landon kept his stance.
She turned to look at me in her icy cold stare. “And what do we have here?”
I shuffled back deeper into the shadows, still on the floor.
“Leave her alone.” Landon commanded, stepping to the side to hide me from her view.
“You’re sticking up for that piece of meat?” She sounded disgusted, “Why?”
“Because I love her.” Landon replied confidently.
At that she burst out in amusement. “Oh man, my bats really picked out a tool.”
Landon must have looked confused because she hastily explained. “I needed another vampire for my plan to work, so I had my bats make one.”
“Your plan?” Landon asked, shifting on his feet.
“Right, it will be explained later.” She shrugged of his question. A pause, then she ordered, “Come with me.”
“I’m not going anywhere.” He defied.
She walked closer to him, running her hands down the side of his face. “I can give you anything you want, anything.” She seduced, and if she hadn’t been a vampire I would have gotten up right then and there to beat her to a pulp.
Landon grabbed her wrists and pulled them down, keeping them in his strong grasp so she couldn’t do it again.
“I don’t want anything from you.” He spat.
“Well you can’t get anything from her.” She argued, obviously indicating me. “You’ll be barely showing signs of aging when she’s old and wrinkly and about to die.”
“I don’t care.” Landon growled.
“But you should,” She said, smug, “Do you think she’s going to want to stay with someone who can’t grow old with her? Who can’t take her out to dinner or even out in public? Who has to kill to survive? Are you going to do that to her, doom her to be with you?”
Landon hung his head and I knew he was thinking about it. I quickly got up, not caring anymore that she was a vampire, I wasn’t going to let her take away my boyfriend.
“No!” I yelled, grabbing Landon’s arm and puling him to face me. He looked down at me with his gray eyes filled with sadness. “Landon, I love you. If that what I have to do to stay with you then I will.”
“Kayri, I’m not going to do that to you.” Landon sighed.
The vampress let out a grunt of satisfaction. I gave her a dirty look while she stood there with her arms crossed a haughty smile on her face.
“You deserve to live a normal life.” Landon’s voice called my attention back to him.
“Landon, please, we can make it work.” I begged.
He brought up his hands and wiped away the tears I hadn’t noticed were falling.
“I love you.” He said.
“I love you too.” I replied, feeling a bit of hope surge through me.
“But,” He continued; I cringed and turned away, not wanting to listen as the hope I had felt seeped away. “that’s why I can’t stay.”
The tears started falling faster now in uncontrolled sobs. One stupid night in the stupid cemetery and I lose my boyfriend. He was everything to me, how could that happen? I didn’t want to believe it; I prayed it was all just a dream even though I knew it wasn’t.
“Yes! So you’ll come with me?” The vampire chick cheered, giddy.
Landon glared at her in anger; his eyes turned red. I backed away from him cautiously. He looked extremely frightening.
Her smile quickly faded away into a scowl as well, though her eyes stayed the same.
“No. I’m not going with you either.” Landon said, his voice cold.
“Fine, if that’s how you want it. But know that you’re going to regret it.” She gave one last fear-provoking look at me before turning away and disappearing into the night sky.
“Go home.” Landon ordered me, his eyes still glued to the sky.
“Landon…” I squeaked, hoping he’d change his mind and allow me to stay.
“I said, leave.” He looked at me now, his eyes still glowing blood red.
Shivers ran down my back, and I found myself extremely scared of him. The eyes exuded any hint of human in him; he was a vampire, a monster, someone to be afraid of.
I hung my head and ran out the building not looking back. Getting in the car I laid my head on the steering wheel trying to calm myself. I was shaking vigorously, tears streaming down my face, and suddenly aware at how cold the night had gotten.
