Once Upon a Time (Twenty-Three)

Stupid trolls. I couldn’t think of anything their names might’ve been, and it was getting frustrating.
“What I told you I’m an all-powerful enchantress?” I tried, hoping to scare them into letting me pass.
“You no ‘chanter.” The first troll announced.
“If you were you have’d already used magic to pass.” Troll number two stated.
“No. I just thought I’d play your little game.” I lied, trying to sound mighty, but I’m sure it didn’t come out as such.
“No game.” Three frowned.
“If you don’t let me pass I will kill you all with the swoop of my hand!” I warned.
They all laughed.
“’chantressers have wands.”
“’n poof from place ta place.”
“’n no have hair. It ruin magic.”
With that I found my plan ruined. I wasn’t sure weather they were true or not, being as I had never met an enchantress, but I didn’t think I should keep going with that lie. They were starting to look angry, and I didn’t really want to find out what they would do if I made then any madder.
I had to think of something, fast. Sitting around thinking was starting to annoy me. I had to save Kainen.
I put my hands on my hips in frustration, suddenly feeling the weight of the sword I had placed in my belt as I felt it in my hand.
I took it out and pointed the sharp blade at them. “If you don’t let me pass I will slit your throats.” I growled, feeling confident. I had a sword, and what did they have? Well, they had their size which turned out to be a greater weapon than I had anticipated.
I one swift and fast I wouldn’t expect out of their size I found myself standing bewildered and sword-less, watching the tolls get back into their post after throwing my sword to the other side of the bridge.
“No slit throats. You guess names.” Two snarled.
So I racked my brain trying to figure out ways to figure out people’s names, well in this case trolls. I determined that the only way I was going to figure out their names if they were written down somewhere, but where would they have written them down?
Just then a high pitch squeal escaped from under the bridge. “BOYS!” The woman cried.
“Yes mother?” The trolls replied in unison.
“What are you doing up there?” She asked, like a mother would their toddlers.
“We guard bridge!” They told her.
“Oh, ok!” She exclaimed, and said no more.
So they lived under the bridge with their mother, it seemed an odd arrangement to me. But then again they didn’t look very bright. Anyway, if they lived down there then they’d have stuff down there. Stuff which they might’ve put their names on! However I couldn’t get underneath the bridge so I had to think of something else. That’s when it hit me, maybe, just maybe…
“Alright, my poor soul! You’ve found me out. I am not an enchantress, nor a swordsman. I am but a meager slave girl; sent to do my masters bidding.” I acted in exaggeration, putting a hand over my forehead.
“Who your master?” Troll number three asked.
“He wishes to remain secret my lords.” They all straightened their posture at the mention of lord.
“No matter. Tell names or no pass.” Number two said firmly.
“I shall, but cleaning objects spotless has made me weary of messy things, and your clothes are dreadfully dirty! Before I offer my last guess, I’ll offer my services to you fine lads and set to clean those garments!”
“Ok.” One smiled dumbly, as if they just won the lottery.
“Mama make us clean and we no like.” Three said as they all took off their shirts, and threw them to me.
An extreme whiff of their terrible stink engulfed me as their shirts landed around me. I gingerly picked them up, trying desperately not to breath. I made my way to the waters edge and placed the tops in the water swooshing them back and forth. With each one I stole a peek and the back and sure enough my predictions were confirmed as each one had their full name written on the collar. They were the same size and I had guessed that it would be hard to tell clothing apart, unless they had their names written.
I finished washing the clothes and wrung them out to remove the excess water and dirt. Then I carried them back over to the trio.
“Here are your garments kind sirs.”
They put the damp clothing on.
“They still wet!” One whined.
“The sun will dry them.” I informed. “Now shall I give my final guess?”
“Yes.”
“You’re names are…” I paused for dramatic effect. “Fee Fum, Fye Fum, and Fow Fum.”
They gaped. “She right!” Two announced, and they quietly moved out of my way their mouths still open in surprise.
“Maybe she is powerful.” I heard Fow say as I sauntered over to the other side of the bridge, picked up my sword, and headed back on my way along the winding golden road.
