I saw his leg first as it shifted out of the shadows into the shining moonlight into the dark room. He was wearing jeans that seemed normal enough. They were a little dirty with a few dark stains, but they didn’t really concern me. I lifted my gaze up to his finely chiseled chest that seemed so defined in the faint light. Then a slight movement from behind him stole my gaze. My eyes adjusted for the dim light and wings formed. They looked exactly like bats wings – black with visible red veins in the fleshy part between the limbs. They had to have been fake, I thought, nobody could just grow wings, but my reality was shattered as the wings flexed and folded in as if he had forgotten about them and was trying to hide them.
I looked up to his face to find some clue as to what was going on, but there were no answers there; only more shock. His hair was the same but his brooding face was pale and looked almost white in the moonlight. Dark circles outlined the bottom of his zealous gray eyes that were surrounded by a soft hint of red. No reference they held to the bright comforting eyes he had before. He was looking right into my eyes with a gaze so intense it seemed to be bearing down into my soul. I felt exposed, naked, my raw emotions laid out neatly for him to see.
He stared at me through his grief stricken eyes, and I knew his was hurting from this.
        I felt drawn too him, compelled to run my hand along his chest and kiss him, tell him that everything was going to be okay, comfort him. But I was also scared, urged to run away as fast as I could. The feelings toyed back and forth leaving me frozen in place.
        I opened my mouth with the intention of asking him the millions of questions that were running through my brain, but nothing came out.
“Landon.” I managed to say; my voice barely above a whisper.
He shut his sorrow filled eyes as if to stop himself from crying and I crumpled down to the ground like I had just been freed from his will.
Then everything started to fade away as unconsciousness pulled me under.
It was still dark outside when I awoke, immediately pulling myself up and searching for Landon.
He was curled up into a ball, sitting on the floor in the patch of moonlight with his arms wrapped around his legs like he was afraid to let himself go. He looked so normal, so human, but he wasn’t human anymore; Humans don’t have wings.
“Landon?” I asked, seeing if he was okay.
He looked up, his gray eyes dug into mine again, but it was softer this time. “I’m sorry Kayri,” He said, standing up. He had been crying.
“What happened?” I said calmly, I wasn’t afraid anymore.
“I don’t know,” he admitted, looking down at his shoes. “I just suddenly felt this stabbing pain in my back and the next thing I knew I was flying over the city with an inconceivable thirst.” He looked at me again with terror and guilt. “I thirsted for blood, Kayri, I killed a person. I turned into a vampire.”
I tried to grasp what he had told me, but my mind didn’t seem to want to hold it as it sifted through me like a sieve. I ran it over and over in my head until finally I got it. My boyfriend was a vampire, a blood thirsty killing vampire. I staggered backwards, how was it even possible?
I had heard of vampires before, of course, but I never once believed even the tiniest bit was true. I looked at Landon again, he had his mouth slightly parted and I could see the two fangs, and his wings – there was proof; vampires exist.
“But how…” I started.
“The bite I think.” He informed me, and I remembered the bite he had received a couple nights previous.
“A vampire?” I thought hearing it aloud would make it sound more possible, but it only sounded ridiculous.
“That’s why I didn’t want you to come.” His stare deepened again as he took a couple steps forward. I didn’t try to move. He was still my boyfriend whom I loved, and I couldn’t stop myself from believing he’d never hurt me. Just because he was a vampire didn’t mean I shouldn’t trust him. Okay, maybe it had a lot of reasons but none of them seemed to register in my brain at that time.
“Oh.” I simply replied, still lost in his eyes. He took a few more steps closer until he was only a few inches away from me.
The air around me filled with his familiar scent.
I lifted my hands up and ran them along the top of his wing. It twitched a bit under my touch, but Landon didn’t seem to mind. They felt quite smooth and I wondered if he’d take my flying some time.
My hands switched to gliding along his chest fearlessly. I wasn't scared of him at all.
He leaned down closer to me, his mouth parted.
Ah! Does he bite her or kiss her?!?!? What do you think he’ll do?
