Screaming Hearts: Part Five

7 year old Karie hid under the bed, giggling at Evan as he walked past his neatly made Spiderman bed and started looking all over the room to find her.
Her laugh gave her away though, and Evan quickly fell to his knees and checked under the bed to discover Karie, laying there grinning.
“Found you!” He acclaimed proudly.
“My turn to count!” Karie exclaimed, as she pulled herself out from under the bed and got to her feet.
“Ok, but this time lets be able to hide anywhere in the WHOLE house!” He said, virtually bouncing up and down with excitement.
Karie quickly agreed with an eager “Okay!” and then ran out of Evan’s bedroom, through the hall, and down the stairs to the living room. She automatically went to the lazy-boy recliner and leaned forward, face first, into the chair and covered her eyes. Then she started counting as Evan hastily hunted for a good place to hide.
“1… 2… 3… 4… 5…” She slowly reached up to one hundred then yelled “Ready or not, here I come!” and scurried off to search for Evan.
She ran to the other side of the living room and checked the crack behind the couch. Then she checked the coat closet, but still didn’t find Evan. So she moved on to the kitchen which was open and attached to the living room. Checking every cabinet, under the table, and in the fridge, she looked with still no sign of Evan. Next she headed up the stairs to the bedrooms, skipping his mother’s room and her office and library because they were silently forbidden. Entering Evan’s room, the first room on the right, she hurriedly searched under his bed, in the closet, and above his desk but she still didn’t find Evan. Thereafter, she headed to the bathroom right across from Evans room, and anxiously pulled open the shower curtain.
“BOO!” Evan yelled from his hiding spot in the shower and made Karie jump with fright.
“You scared me!” Karie announced, and Evan apologized, trying to conceal his laughter.
“Sorry, I didn’t know it would scare you that bad.” He said between snickers.
Karie smiled, “It’s okay, wanna play again?”
“Karie! Your mom’s here!” Evan’s mom called from downstairs before Evan could reply and the pair grumbled in complaint.
“Awe I don’t want to go home! I was having fun!” Karie whined.
“I have an idea! Let’s play one last game of hide and seek but this time your mom can be the seeker,” Evan proposed.
They ran off to find a hiding spot. Locating a good one under the bed in the guest room which was right next to the bathroom, they waited for Karie’s mother. Accidentally letting a few giggles slip out, they silently dreaded the moment they both knew was coming. Finally, after a dozen unanswered calls up the stairs, Elise Ray figured out she’d have to go upstairs to get her daughter. She searched in every corner and crevice before she finally found them huddled under the bed. Dragging Karie out, the child wailed, “I don’t wanna go home!” to no avail. They were soon out to the car with Karie looking sadly out the window, waving goodbye to Evan.
***
She couldn’t think, it hurt too much as throbs of pain pounded in Karie’s whole body. What happened? She slowly opened her eyes to find herself staring up at her mother and father. Stains of tears laced her parent’s faces.
“You’re Okay!” They harmoniously cried in relief. “We were so worried.”
She looked beyond them to the white walls and blue chairs, and the hospital bed that brought the question into voice.
“What happened?” Karie asked, her voice raspy. The last thing she remembered was watching the movie with Evan before going downstairs to get pizza.
“Honey..” Her father answered, her mother hung her head. They were avoiding the question, “Why don’t you just get some rest?”
“What happened?” She asked, more firmly this time, as terrifying thoughts raced through her head. “Where’s Evan?”
Her mother looked at her father as if to say ‘just tell her’, he took a deep breath. “You were in a car accident sweetie,” Her father said. “Amazingly you only suffered a broken leg and a minor head injury,” He paused, glancing at his feet and sighing, “Evan was severely wounded.”
The car accident. Memories came racing back. The cell phone going off, grandpa in the hospital, Evan’s hug before she got it the car, falling leaves, headlights coming straight at them, a scream, whose? Did Evan make it? Is he alive? “Is he okay?” She could feel the tears racing down her face, her heart pounding in her ears, fear growing with every passing moment, her parents avoiding her eyes. “Just tell me if he’s okay damnit!”
“Karie…” Her mother joined the conversation. “They tried their hardest, they couldn’t save him.”
Suddenly, everything went cold. Everything seemed to just slip away. It was as if time actually stopped, and Karie had to force herself to keep breathing.
“No…” No, Evan can’t be dead. I love him, he can’t leave me now! NO! “NO!!! I don’t believe it! He can’t be dead!” Dead, the word sounds so final, the end.
“Darling… I’m sorry.” Her father tried to console her; he bent down with his arms open for a hug.
“No! You’re lying! This is all just one big huge sick joke!” She pushed her father away. “No…” Her voice trailed off into sobs.
Evan, my Evan. My silly, cute Evan. I will never get to see his face again. I’ll never get to hear his voice again, his laughter. He’ll never be there when things are going bad, when I need someone to talk to. No more of his corny, yet funny jokes. Never again will we have movie night. Happiness died with Evan. I never even got to tell him that I love him, and that I’m sorry for everything I’d ever done to hurt him. I love you Evan! Please come back… please. I need you. I can’t live without you, I won’t.
“Baby, please…” Karie’s mother cooed, “Is there anything we can do for you?”
“I just want to be alone.”
With that, they left. They walked out silently giving hopeful glances before stepping out into the hallway. They left Karie alone in her bed, to stare at the wall and wonder how or if she’ll survive without her everything, her Evan Lee Michaels.
