I sat on the depressing land, tears streaming down my face and I stared blankly at the ground, made by my tears. My cloths where tattered and crusted with mud, and the unaccustomed lightness caused me to realize I must have forgot the backpack in the cave when I ran out to find Zain.

Zain, the thought of him made the tears fall harder and more rapidly. I missed him, the way he made me smile and just everything about him.  How can I do this without him? He was my guide, my protector. Around him I felt like I could do anything I wanted, and I always felt safe. But now he’s gone, and I’m sitting here lost and confused. There’s no way I could do this alone.

Lost in my sorrowful thoughts, I didn’t notice a creature coming toward me until the being placed a hand on my shoulder. I looked up, startled, to see an angel.

“Stand, my child,” The euphoric creature spoke with a pure voice unlike that of a woman or a man, reaching out its hand and lifting me to my feet as I took it, “Rise and find the strength you keep hidden within. It’s up to you to determine your fate.”

The celestial being had on a white robe, and seemed to take on the form of many different life forms at the same time, but it stayed unchanged as well. It stood tall, draped in white robes with eclectic wings, an aural halo and a body similar to that of a human, without hair or facial features. And yet, it seemed to shift to take on many other different forms. At one time it seemed to have the appearance of that of a dove, then faded into the representation of a lion, and such.

“Wha-Who are you?” I stammered in wonder.

“I am your guardian angel, always around to protect and watch over you unseen. But my need here is fulfilled, and it is time to set you off unaccompanied” The angel explained then began to fade, slowly disappearing into the air.

“Wait! Why can’t you stay?” I called after my guardian angel, fearing being on my own again.

“This is not my journey.” I heard it whisper back through the wind, and then I was alone.

The angel gave me a new found strength, and for the first time since Zain was kidnapped, I knew what I had to do. I had to finish this expedition, but where to start?

Just then, another black explosion swallowed the air in the distance, and I decided to follow it. It could only have been made by some follower’s of Lord Desolate, and since he’s who I want to find, I should go after them.

I walked on towards the cloud of black smoke that was now engulfing the land around it, crossing the bleak terrain I’ve crossed so many times before. Except, this time, as I crossed the land seemed to slowly fill with life. Trees slowly grew full and grass gradually softened my steps. Confusion and concern hid in the back of my mind, but I was too delighted with the change to care.

Then I reached a village, which was covered in a blanket of fog. There were a few hut’s I could see that didn’t have anything wrong with them except that the only hint of color in the whole town was the little bit of grass in each yard. The dirt seemed a light gray, along with each hut.

Silence weighed heavy in the gloomy, yet strangely inviting town, and even though my head was telling me to turn around and go back, my body was telling me to go deeper into the city. I couldn’t help but listen to my body as I stepped deeper into the village, through the main road with huts on either side of me, as common sense and reason slowly slipped away.

Then, out of one of the huts came a family. There was a mother, a father, and two children. The oldest child was a boy and the other was a girl. They all wore black pants and a black shirt along with huge smiles, but at the moment I thought it only because of seeing a new person.

For some reason, I was subconsciously drawn to them, as I moved towards them.

“Where am I?” I asked as I reached them.

“You are in Perdition. Please, come in. I will make you something to eat and you can rest, you must be exhausted.” The mother said in a monotonic pitch, but I didn’t pay mind.

The family then moved aside and I entered the hut. Inside of the shelter was extremely old, the floor was just dirt and there was only one room. A table, four chairs, a simple counter lined with a few cabinets, and two beds were all that filled the space.

They ushered me to the table into one of the wooden chairs which had cobwebs draped all over, and willingly I sat down. The father and two children stood to the side of me, still watching and still smiling as the mother moved to the counter and pulled something out of one of the cabinets. She then turned around and placed it in front of me, silently urging me to eat.

Just then I had a sudden feeling of something being wrong and I was able to think for a second as a voice called out to me in my head. Myra! Myra!  The voice seemed familiar, but I couldn’t place it. I started to drift off into the spell again till the voice invaded my thoughts once more. Myra! And suddenly I knew who it was, Zain.

At that moment rationale kicked in as I realized where I was and what I was about to do. Abruptly, the town didn’t seem so inviting and I knew I had to get out. I started to stand up, but the father placed his hands firmly on my shoulders, pushing me back down again.

“I’m sorry, I must be going.” I tried to sound calm, but fear had crept in and made my voice shake.

“No, stay” The children chirped, their expression unchanging.

“We love the company” The father chimed in, with the same monotonic pitch as the rest of his family.

“Thank you, but I really must be going.” And I took a stand.

At that time the seemingly normal family started to shift into evil creatures. They were black with huge gaping holes through their middle. The skin covering them started to burn and crisp into a charcoal black, and their eyes gazed red.

I bolted and ran, barely making it out the door between the family, and they took off after me.

I picked up speed, until my feet came out from under me and I went flying to on the ground. My face slid into the ground and I could feel the blood dripping down off of my forehead as I got up and noticed the skeleton that I had tripped over. Looking closer, then, I noticed the ground was covered in skeletons and the fear inside me grew.

I started to run again, and stopped when I noticed more of the terrifying creatures right in front of me, I turned around but they were there too. I was surrounded, and stunned by panic brought by their chant.

“Soulless rise when souls are ripe. Soulless fight to keep the night. We are the soulless, demised and doomed. Better run or be consumed.”
